The thing is that a couple of players might very well see and understand but since the rest of the team seems oblivious they wait because no one wants to be the first into the meat grinder.
I do it myself. 8 of my guys are buzy with a Locust and the entire enemy assault lance comes stomping around the corner from behind, I get the hell out of Dodge and join the Locust hunters if I can. I tried to save the team one to many times resulting in me dead with no kills and no c-bills to show for my effort so now I am looking out for #1.

A lot of players simply just don't care.

Exactly this, only for me it's when I'm in my Atlas and there are people on the team that want to push. And of course... They specifically want an assault to push that can take some damage. Well I've pushed plenty with and countless times I push and get my butt handed to me while the rest of the team barely moved a step... Why would I want to push like?

This, pretty much. Being the team meatshield round after round isn't terribly fun, and if everyone is too busy chasing that Raven that pranced by 900 meters out or trying to jumpjet up the one hill they always ERLL-snipe from, it takes nothing short of a miracle to get them redirected to the actual threat.

I can't tell you how many times..especially today on the new map where I am like "uh their Charlie lance is coming around...need some help" ..and bam... team keeps moving in same direction fighting a couple mediums...I die...and I say "you guys are all about to get hit from behind by their assaults"....and guess what? They do!! Sweet!! glad to have participated in another 12-4 loss!! And 2 of those kills were from enemy overheating and killing themselves!!
Totally agree here... There is no bounding or lanes of cover with teams no matter how hard to try to establish a line... It is why I like playing in groups that coordinate...instead of running in a cluster towards the inevitable middle of the map death-fest... Lemmingwarrior..... not Mechwarrior...

Clearly it all failed. The team ended up getting "over run" by an enemy force that was announced well in advance, stalked by my light mech the entire time giving moment to moment positioning of the OpFor. By "over run," I mean to say they were facing the wrong god damned direction and were somehow surprised when the enemy team appeared exactly. Where. I. Kept. Telling. Them. They. Were. FFS.

You played as I believe PGI intended/hoped for when they made this game. Kudos for not fighting. I see a lot of lights that don't understand the scout in scouting. They run off and at the start one can see 2 arrows dancing. even if our mech wins he'll probably be to damaged to be of any use for the rest of the match.

Certainly did me no good. Due to the wall of enemy mechs in front of me, and my team passively sitting on its thumbs, I had no good opportunity to make my attack run for virtually the entire game, until the kill counter was so skewed it was a forgone conclusion.
I think the extra salt on my wound was that the LRM boats that asked for "HOLD LOCKS PLZ" did not even use my UAV which was deployed, highlighting enemies approximately 800 meters from our line - within LRM range. I mean.. come the hell on, really?!
