Calling It, Rifleman Doa

500-800 damage per match is pretty easy to achieve. There's really no need to deviate from the stock builds much with this mech.
This is a good mech.

The RFL sports awesome ballistic quirks, awesome PPC quirks, incredible mobility and unsurpassed ridge sniping abilities. It plays like it were a Jaeger's and BlackJack's lovechild. I've been scoring top 3 scores in mine consistently so far. Which doesn't look very DOA to me!

Superior Dual AC20
Superior Dual Gauss
Superior 3xUAC5s
Though it can do some of these things
The only thing that the RFL has over the JM6 is energy points on the 5D with 8 points and 2 of them in the CT which is superior to the Firebrand by 2 E points but the Firebrand can go up to 91kph with tweak and a 340XL
DOA? Nah... I wouldn't call it DOA, you want DOA look at the IFR, SMN, GAR, MLX which hold the title of DOA much better
oh dear god the typical boring, easy mode meta builds. My jagermechs sported 2 ac5/2 ac2, Dual AC/10 with medium lasers and stuff like that...

Is Firebrand better? Without doubt. Still struggling with to find a good build, will try to make it work somehow.
The Firebrand is definitely able to mount more armor. I've done a 3N style build with it:
- ER Large Laser x 2 (RA/LA)
- AC/5 x 2 (RA/LA) [4 tons of ammo, I think, might be 3)
- Medium Laser x 2 (RT/LT)
- AMS (1 ton of ammo)
- Full Armor
- Standard 250 Engine
Thing is a beast and can take a pounding. I can't count the number of times someone blew off a torso thinking I had XL, and then I killed them.
The Rifleman 3N is more of a glass cannon, but the AC/5s fire a bit better and it makes it pretty nasty. If you're willing to fork out the cash for a Firebrand, it's a great mech, but I really like the RFL-3N a lot too. There's definitely a nostalgia factor for me with all the classics.
The basic strategy for all of these for me is the following:
· Button 1 - AC/5 - Chain Fire
· Button 2- ER Large Lasers – Group Fire
· Button 3 – Medium Lasers – Group Fire
· Button 4 – Medium Lasers/Large Lasers – Group Fire.
So what you do is punch holes with your large lasers at range. You can get off about three shots with your Large lasers before you get heat problems, then you start railing away with your AC/5s. Usually, by the time you’ve hit three times with your lasers they’ve got an open location or weak armor. If you’re ambushed by a light mech, then you hit them with a quad laser strike. You can get about two of these off before you have heat problems. Then you switch to AC/5s to finish them off.

Hmm, I think its pretty XL friendly. I usually get my CT cored in it, only a couple times so far I died by losing a sidetorso. Just put a XL290 in it and enjoy

They expect RFLs to be able to roll into the middle of a brawl and tank it out with the big guys. It was never meant for that.
Played to it's purpose, it does well - support the assaults and heavies by working the edges of the fight pouring fire into it.
Are you going to be the match hero every time with tons of kills? Probably not, but you will rack up the damage.
If you're toe to toe brawling in a RFL, you're doing it wrong.............and you'll be spectating in short order.
There are other mechs that do what the RFL does better, but the RFL is cool nostalgia that actually works if you play it right.

Joke builds aside, the 3N is probably the best variant outside of maybe the LK. The 5D lacks duration/heat gen quirks for lasers and it can really be felt. I want to run PPCs on it, but 3 PPCs triggering ghost heat kinda limits its capabilities (but is still my build on it regardless).
Is it comp material? Probably not
Is it DOA? Well it is still better than the Dragon and VND-1X, so not really.

Yeah, I am feeling this way as well, the 3N has better offensive quirks, but the LK has better structure. I suspect both will do 3LL-Gauss pretty well.
Right now I'm running Gauss, LPL, 4 MLs on the 3N to scrounge up some extra heatsinks and more alpha power. Its interesting, it works, but the 3LL will probably be better.

For the ERPPC version give it mad PPC range and velocity.
If it's doomed to be a slow (lighter)heavy that's fine. Make it a long range bullet hose with or sniper. Make it Look at that huge radar on its back! Maybe give it a built-in BAP or some information Warfare quirks.
At the end of the day if it can't be competitive at least make it unique and entertaining to pilot.

I am a Jag pilot, and this thing is no Jag jr.! Even with maxed out armor, a Firestarter can kill it by looking at it! After heavily modify these mechs, they still blow! (Up!) I hardly do any damage in them before I get killed by a Locust or Raven. I am going back to my Jags and Mauraders.
Well 2 out 3 of the Unseen are good...
