Let me tell about players, Steam, MWO and some logic behind it. Pretty easy.
So on Steam launch I had - 2 men that played MWO even longer than I did, 1 from CBT (IIRC) and the other from OBT. 1 played as much as I did. All others were new.
Out of all 13 people total (we usually had group of 4-9 players, rarely all were online together), I believe only 2 didn't purchase any of the packs from Steam (they're a great deal anyway, far better than what you get in MWO store). Most have purchased 2-4 packs.
We all have played extensively during Xmas holidays, kept playing through all those sweet deals, cheap Mechs, free stuff and so on.
Then some other games came out and most of the group switched to those, and some left the game with an idea that not THAT much there is to do in MWO besides TDM (however you call any of the modes). Basically half of those are interested to get back in the game or spend more money if there will be any better content for group play.
Everyone who've played it had their own fun and don't think their time or money have been wasted.
Some might say about Units and CW, but 1. Everyone had competitive period in the past and that is not interesting anymore as a goal. And everyone knows what CW against good premades is. The word "fun" is sucked out of it. 2. Nobody really has the schedule to be able to play daily or in a specified time/day competitively anymore. 3. The whole CW itself is pretty much pointless, because all these planets have no affect on players or the game and the income is a lot slower compared to basic PUG.
So out of all those players we end up with 3 players that began in the past, 7 new players that might pick MWO again if PGI actually changes/adds things. 15 people brought some money (20-40 (i guess) USD) in the game.
I totally disagree, that player base is shrinking or any of this nonsense, but new players I've seen told me that even though mechanics are interesting, and building/learning your mech is a fun thing to do, the game is lacking content.
