If you don't want to git gud? Well, all those Kodiak's everywhere? Grab a mad dog, or archer, or some silly lurm mech. Pelt them with LRM's. Many lurms. You'll do lots of largely ideas damage but it'll ensure kmmd's when they die. Done.

That's the rationale I used to choose my play style for the weekend.

Players are divided by tiers, so a brand new player will end up with mostly other brand new players. Until you get to tier 3 or so, your enemies are not going to be very experienced for the most part. Faction Warfare is different, since there are no tiers there.
Kodiaks are great at one thing; putting out damage. If you don't facetank them and you focus their vulnerable CTs you really shouldn't have much of a problem, for the most part. If a Kodiak tries to play like an Atlas (like many, even at higher tiers do), punish them for that.

I completely forgot there was a personal challenge event going on. Turns out I already had it completed. Took less than 4hrs of play time, and all I used was a 2 PPC Summoner.
Perhaps you should...git gud?

I know it's only tier 2 but I've regularly scored top of my team/game with mediums and heavies during the event. KDK has big ct and often likes to stare, take advantage of this.

What mechs do you have? I'll see what sort of usable advice I can give.
With that said, event weekends always have... gimpy play, let's say. No worse for new players than non event weekends, but events in general tend to lend towards irritating player behaviour for everyone. It's a sad but unavoidable consequence of wanting to have events for new mechs. And these events serve a real purpose, in addition to being sort of marketing for the new mechs.

The only gimps are on my team every game, I have tried all the trial mechs they all suck, I own 2 storm crows, but they just overheat too fast to do any damage.

The game has a steep learning curve. Nothing to be done about that and keep it a MechWarrior game though. The answer is purely in "Get Better", and we're here to help. I'm not expecting you to buy anything.
I'm trying to help you here, but I need you to help me do that. What mechs do you have?
