Can We All Agree That Anime Gifs Do Not Belong On This Forum?

It's just something that's been really bothering me for a while now and it also seems like the popularity of these gifs has been slowly rising as of late, which is not really something you would ideally expect to come across often on a forum for a game like this.

But first a disclaimer: I am a big anime fan myself, still watch it today, and I believe a lot of us here have probably seen a number of Gundam or Macross series back in the days, or just simply enjoy watching their cute girls slice of life shows which many of the gifs that I see here are coming from.

So again, I have nothing against anime, big fan here, I just don't think this belongs on this forum. Actually, I don't recall seeing this much anime gifs on dedicated anime community forums that I am occasionally visiting, which in comparison is really surprising how these random gifs happen to appear so frequently here.

Considering we are a very niche, dedicated hardcore community that will go in depths about ins and outs of a particular thing in BT lore and MWO gameplay with many quality threads and discussions happening here, it's just that feeling whenever someone starts spamming the gifs it really lowers the overall image of this place.

And I remember reading once somebody mentioning (I think it was Bishop) that anime gifs are permitted, but frowned upon, I think he couldn't have said that better. But I really wanted to bring this topic out to attention. And as much as I like the concept of gifs in general, it's this weird conflict with my inner self that gets me thinking "this just doesn't belong here" and it happens a little bit too often then I would like, to the point it made me consider making this thread.

Does anyone else feel like this too?

I actually think they are hilarious as long as they convey the persons point. If they are just a random gif. that gets a meh but as long as they are relevant I don't see the harm in them.

Of course they belong. Just a matter of how relevant to the subject at hand.

I don't get anime AT ALL ... but I think the gifs are frequently funny.

In before this is a continuous thread of anime fans trying to one up each other.

OP, why oh why did you do this? It just encourages them.

I wouldn't categorically state that anime gifs, southpark gifs or my little pony gifs don't belong on this forum. But I will say that it's f*cking annoying to see a good thread suddenly hi-jacked by 2-3 people spamming anime gifs back and forth, and you have to scroll through them to see the actual discussion. It's somewhat better now that I have put the most prominent anime posters on my ignore list, although some people still quote them now and again.

It's like when posting memes. Doing it once in a while is funny and refreshing. A person spamming 10 different memes in every thread is annoying as hell.

Pretty much this. I really don't have a problem with mecha gifs, while waifu gifs are certainly not relevant.

I am not much a fan of gifs in general (anime or otherwise) but if it makes People happy, then I say go for it and post them. I usually just skip over the posts which contain gifs, so it is not real skin off my nose.

As far as I know.

Anime is the secret behind japan's low birth rates & wildly successful abstinence programs.

I have no problem with that precedent being extended beyond japan's borders into the rest of the world.

Quite the contrary.

I think this whole community made a grave mistake when they went for anime instead of LOLcats.

Only way to "clean up" some unrelevant gifs if mods are willing to do it or there are some forum rules that prohibited excessive amount of gifs.

the GIFs are funny, but they are mostly used to troll. the forum mods don't seem to care about "the toxicity of our city."

For me, picturing overweight, middle-aged white men posting those images is the most disturbing part, considering that's the largest demographic that's into Battletech and MWO....let your mind digest that for a while.

I'd imagine something that is even worse than that would be overweight, middle-aged white men posting those images, while using an anime character's name. Posted Image

the only way I can see a change happening is if the original thread starter has a check box to allow gifs in the thread or not

Nailed just what I was thinking about but couldn't find the right words for it.

I'm not that opposed against them, I just don't think it's very appropriate for this community. As it is, the thread was made for discussion and hearing your thoughts.
