Except you have perfectly described the MWO quickplay mode. Just drop into an average SQ match and see.

I have described the LOSING teams actions perfectly, the Winning team will ALWAYS have at least a solid knot of +5 Players who are functioning together hence why that team wins. All I play is SQ since Group/Comp disgusts me and I quit doing it almost 2 years ago even before it fully matured into the gross caricature it has become now. But that has a lot to do with people having no idea what game we are playing nor how to win consistently... the Win conditions & Lose conditions of the maps are basic and what any 11 year old could figure out. The "shooting" part of the game while very fun is secondary to positioning, this is like 13th century chess where the pieces shoot at each other. I can call the VIctory or Defeat of a team over 90% (not counting weekends or European server) just by watching the opening 15 seconds of movement on the mini-map... if people do not even know what to do in the opening seconds of the match then it is indicative that they do not know what to do in the rest of the match either. Then you have the "It is my game" or "do not tell me how to play" people which are actively harmful to whatever Team is unfortunate enough to be stuck with them, like if you knew how to play then I would not have to be taking the time to not only observe your incorrect behavior but having to correct you. SQ functions differently than GQ/Comp which is why I like it more since it closer to Battletech but all the same core concepts are applicable, it is just different style that should be brought a more Mid-Range/Brawler build instead of Hide and Peek bullsh1t.

Except that happens to most games. Losing side is less coordinated than winning side.

Having just played a game with some of the tier 1 forum warriors I'm amazed at how much they blamed the rest of the team for not following their orders - even though those orders were a bad idea and resulted in a loss

What a bunch of Monday Morning Quarterbacks!

I can see why some people would be really put off by running into them.

I find that in QP (group queue) the T1 players (that I know) are just as likely to be running "troll builds" as any one in say, T5. The difference is that the T1 players know that they are trolling, that's all. Hell even in CW, I have played matches against comp teams running LRMs so even here they aren't all serious business all the time.

I'm Tier 3 and I've met El Bandito in match today again. Clan Ghost Bear guy was in this match too. Both in enemy team of course. As always. This is 2nd time within 3 days. And he is the only one, for whom I know tier for sure. And how many other Tier 1-2 guys are in my matches? I don't even know. How can this game be enjoyable, if Tier 3 guys are being constantly stomped by Tier 1s?

You would have a point... EXCEPT the orders were NOT followed which is what resulted in the loss by not having weight to punch the people off the base. People were told to stay out of the tunnel from the start and to go Top and NOT go Under yet we lost 5 mechs by them not following orders and becoming entangled in a fight not where they needed to be. It was because of their REFUSAL to function with the group that we lost. It was a textbook example of bad play from people who have no idea how to move their piece around the board in a semi-coordinated fashion with the other pieces.

Sidenote- Shifty blowing himself up overheating right away definitively hurt immensely our chances of victory

Yes, that guy's post made no sense.

A.) The orders weren't followed so the entire point is moot from the get go.

B.) Did you come up with a better plan?

C.) The worst plan now is the better than the best plan 10 seconds from now. Things in MWO move very quickly and circumstances turn on a dime. Haste is always beneficial. Games go fast. At least follow a plan has a chance. Running around without purpose is a guaranteed loss.

I either talk too much or not enough in my games.

I'll just stick to "Mew Mew Pew Pew".

Yes it is. As long as I'm the only one that logs into my accounts, it is MY GAME. It certainly isn't yours, or anyone else's.

Actually, it's your team's game, and if you drop the ball, they have every right to call you on it.

That being said, if you can keep up with the team in an LRMboat, they have no ammo to shoot at you for it. If you can't, play something that does.

Quote

You would be surprised at just how many players cannot do an average of 450 damage in a match. So tiers do work to an extent to keep the very worst from dropping too often with those who are on the higher tier.

It's actually worse than that. Remember, people don't lose PSR if the team wins, and they gain more PSR even being a scrub in a win than they lose in two matches of equal scrubbery on losses, if not three.

If a player has a roughly 1:1 W/L ratio, they will eventually go up a tier. Even if it's close to 1:1...they will eventually go up a tier. The moment they're T3, they're guaranteed to swim with the sharks- and unless they're so incompetent as to be able to operate basic controls AND unlucky enough not to get carried, the waves of the brown sea will keep them floating there.

The only way that will change is if PSR +/- has more stringent requirements as you go up in Tier rank, and larger penalties for failing to meet those minimums as well.

Tiers are a joke, Tier 1 can play with as low as tier 4. Something definitely needs to happen to make tiers matter again. Only solution I see is to nerf buckets so Tiers are match closer, ie; Tier 1 can play with 2 and maybe rarely 3, so on and so forth for other tiers. Poor tiering quality is one of the main reasons myself and a few of my hombres don't play as often anymore, why should we, people who are actively trying to improve, continue to get matched with people that have no interest in improving their play or strategy? People who consistently use sub-par weapons and tactics. It's not fun having them on our team, and it's not fun playing against lower tiers because it's not a challenge.

The question was:

"What do you do when you are forced to play polar orifice?" with respect to the context of "short range weapons."

No amount of cover will save your *** if you can never get into range to do any damage until most of your own team is dead.

But you can get into range with brawling gundams on polar memelands, not easily but certainly more easily than alpine

But brawling is summering on a lot of maps and the stars have to align for it to work well, this is the path you choose when you brawl.

the game needs anther 20k players for it to matter. there just isn't enough people in queues I bet to make rounds

You can't get into brawling range and hope to survive long enough to make a difference if your team won't crest the ridgeline and charge across the 300 - 500 meters without cover to do so.

This is part of the "stars aligning" part.

I play a game to have fun. Sure, I'm Tier 2 and about to be 1, but I still play cheese builds all the time. The edge just isn't so large that I'd give up the joy of playing, which is the only reason I spend time here anyway.

Yeah, "Brawling" is such a good tactic that our entire military doctrine is based around intelligence, long-range weapons, and not getting into knife fights unless absolutely required, such as in clearing buildings. That's our tanks, ships, and aircraft use weapons with ranges in the kilometers, not meters. Brawling is just an open invitation to get shot.

None of the things you mentioned have in-game parallels, so your comparison doesn't make sense. I mean, planetary bombardment from space would be more effective than laser vomit or gauss/ppc fire.

I think the OP is arguing that since this game is based in a fictional universe where mechs often do a lot of brawling (including hand to hand on the IS side), the general shift towards hiding behind chest high walls and firing at targets on the other side of the map takes away any uniqueness that the game had. Or perhaps I'm just projecting my own feelings.

In fact, i don't like that long range weapons can be so easily used in short range combat. There should be more drawbacks to use long range weapons in close combat.

Besides heat, the main issue I see with long range weapons is their low cooldown. Those weapons had longer cooldown timers than they do now. The GR is the only weapon that is even close the their original cooldown timer, ranging from 7-10 seconds, the delays taken from MPBT/Solaris VII and other MW games.

Hmm. I have never been a meta maniac, can't poptart for crap because I don't enjoy the play style and often run mixed builds yet I am up here at Tier 1. Honestly if anything I feel my teams are worse at Tier 1 than they were at Tier 2 and 3 with alot of know-it-all players who either A)Try to micromanage everyone or Posted Image Think their way is the best and only way because they are Tier 1 and run off and do their own thing. Also there seems to be more smack talking as well. My stats are generally increasing though so aside from the extra frustration I feel from playing in the Elite Tier, my performance is doing ok.

Well, I think match maker tries to evenly distribute "higher skill players" and lower skill players on both teams, so now that your tier rating marks you as a "high skill player", you are noticing that you are being forced to carry less experienced players rather than being carried yourself

Potatoes don't know they're being carried, because the end of the round comes and they see that they did decent damage compared to the people carrying, all while being entirely oblivious to the fact that their damage was spread across at least half worthless components, and were only doing it from a support position, without an enemy directly engaging them.
