I'm tier 1 only because I've been playing this game since June 2012...

It might mean nothing (I'm ranked 22367 in S15 and I am 60% through T2) but it affects a lot, namely the matchmaker.

Oh, gameplay and skill between T1 and T5 is exactly the same, but T5 has less open mic rage rants so its more peaceful

and usually a little less Tryhards out farming because Comp Que was too much for them... so tier 4 and 5 are a lto easier to jsut run fun builds in instead of MetaVanilla

If I played the game more seriously I could hit Tier 1 easily enough. Instead, I'm Tier 2. And I've said many times that I'm fairly mediocre (though I do have occasional moments of greatness), so I don't think I should be higher than Tier 3.

LIES! THe OP said tier 1s only to keep us clutterbucks out of the way! :P
(though seriously... If I would stop actually having fun, and grind out maybe 35-50 games in Meta builds I guess I could finally max out the last couple millimeters of my XP bar.... and I'm what... in actual skill and phukks given... a solid... tier 2.5? lol)

T1 is utterly meaningless. It is purely a matter of time for all but the most inept of players.
Yes

In solo queue, an individual player rarely has a profound effect on the team's winning or losing.
I typically run really, really bad mechs. I just have more fun with mixed loadouts, non-meta, and nothing but lights for my first few thousand games. But when it gets to the point that the opposing tier 1 is just wrecking, then I'll hop in a carry mech and it's win after win. And I'm not even that good. The "real" tier 1s often carry the majority of matches, that's how they get a 2+ W/L in solo que. My historic is W/L is 1.28, but my W/L in my carry mechs is all 1.5-2. This is all after over 8k matches, mainly in solo que, so the only explanation is individual performance.

T1, T3, T2.. it doesn't matter, you're always in T5

I was placed as Tier 2 initially-which I thought was fair. I'm a better player now than I was then but still not sure if Tier 1 is where I belong if the top comp players are also there as well. Can we just get a Tier 0 just for the players that make up the top 1% and actually deserve to be there?

What exactly do you mean by "actually" T1?

Exactly this.

There are far, FAR too many people in T1 that quite frankly should be in T3 at the absolute best.

But blessed are we who have this utterly useless method of ranking players.

None of it matters at this point anyway. When PSR was introduced we had enough of a population for a MM to actually work. Now, outside of NA primetime, I swear half the team is made up of VIP AI. A year ago I argued for a better MM, but at this point I think complete randomness would be the best. No more scoring system to pointlessly argue about, no more tiers, no more getting your rank carried in group que, nothing.

More like aged milk.

There is an illusion that reaching Tier 1 you're teammates won't be potatoes and have played long enough to not make noob mistakes.

Then you reach tier 1 and realise your teammates still charge into death valley on tourmaline or stand in the water in front of the citadel on River City.

Then the milk sours and the salt starts to flow.

At least you get longer wait times to make up for it.

Please stop your elitism, depending on your stats you are one of these "potatos" you are talking about, if you cant catch up with an old, drugged and disabled man, whos using lrms in tier 1, finds metawhoring boring (and dont uses it) and only plays for fun and not competition.

Then that person does not belong in Tier 1, because they bring the quality of the match down

That's the whole issue, EVERYONE can become Tier 1
That is an issue, because it fails as a measure of skill, or general robot competency
It just separates new players from old players. That is the ONLY thing PSR does

I don't see what I consider to be an actual Tier 1 player in here.

For the record, If you haven't been in a top tier of a tournament (Div A/B MRBC, finalists in RHOD or Star League, or top 12 in WC '16/'17) I don't consider you tier 1...

Now I want to do an experiment where teams made up of nothing but random tier 4 players fight teams of nothing but random tier 1 players until we have a decent sample size and see what the win/loss ratio looks like.

I haven't been in tier 4 for quite a while, and there's a lot of variance in tier 1, but I wouldn't be surprised if the tier 4 team never won a match.

Of course, depends on the players. If you pitted folks in tier 4 who haven't grinded to T1 yet against the worst tier 1s that are there solely by matches played... then they probably stand a chance.

But between people who play a similar amount and one team is just "natural" tier 4s? It'd be a slaughter.
