===== Event Review Rebuild, Update #3 (FINAL UPDATE) =====

Well, after my Previous Event Review & Rating Update (Up the thread at https://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/268669-turtle-bay-aftermath/page__view__findpost__p__6162551) about 6 Hours Ago, there has been...
  • One heck of an Extension (See at https://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/268945-aftermath-event-resolution/) has been activated by PGI! Three full Extra days... SWEET!!!
  • A bunch of people got Bonus Loot Bags due to the error! Enjoy those Bonus Loot Bags, people!
(I might not have gotten any myself, but I wasn't on the battlefields during that period of time where things weren't working. But I'm not mad in any way/shape/form/manner because I was dealing with other things anyway, and I already got all of the Main 150 Loot Bags during the earlier cycle. In fact, I'm really surprised that PGI was willing to step up to the plate after an error like that, and do something rather nice!)
...so in light of this, my Review Rating is taking another upward spike to...

8.0/10

...as I did NOT expect such a large-scale fix to be provided to the Community. However, I do hope that PGI reads all the feedback I've provided since I rebuilt my Event Review from scratch on this thread, and improves Future Events as to not have any of the flaws which I've noticed in this one. B)

On other notes, my own Loot Bags have been unpacked, plus I got a few things from that Aftermath Sale. I'm going to get back to the battlefields as soon as I reasonably can, and I'll see you all out there, as well as at the Next Event. ^_^

I assumed he was complaining (as I've seen often here from other common posters) that the event wasn't long enough for him because of personal circumstances. I didn't realize it was because PGI screwed up the event timer. My bad, that actually is a PGI problem then, and they should fix it.

I've just too often seen people complaining that events aren't long enough, or that they can't participate, for whatever arbitrary personal reason, and I had a knee-jerk response because it looked like more of the same complaining. It wasn't, so sorry for that reaction.

Funny how all I needed to do was post something about not getting loot bags for Dr DV to like one of my posts. And he did on every one of them. PGI went above and beyond to fix this and that salty mw is clicking like faster than my mom ninjas FB pics of my 3 year old.

Here's last half year's worth of leaderboard data for players who by their own admission succeeded in attaining 500 score for the event ( cf linked thread )
To summarize: 70-80% of the playerbase should be more than capable of completing that goal at least ONCE during the several day event if they put their mind to it.
The only players that goal "shuts out" are ones who either are abjectly terrible or take a look at the goal and assume it's impossible without even trying.
Hey! I'm 30% and 48% on that list! And someone just called me a top player on Reddit! These lies must cease and desist immediately! I may revolt and start using LRMs to maintain my image of a high performing MechWarrior!

I feel hurt as I've almost entirely played FW since I came back so aren't even on that list ... for the last year. ;)

PS: TBH some of the claims in this thread have been dubious at best as you can just compare what it took you to achieve the target to their claims and go .... really?

Are you implying that I didn't accomplish it 4-5x on 2 accountant because of my poor Jarl's list ranks? 228 is 0 and 500 average. And I get one shot in lights on occasion :)

I'm sorry, but your list is full of holes. Many of those names, if not all of them, are "'Elite-Type, Competitive-Class Players'", and as such do NOT fall within the scope of my Event Reviews & Ratings in any way/shape/form/manner whatsoever. Next time, please take a better look around and find those who are only of the "'Above Average'-Class" or lesser. Quit trying to lump everyone together as one pile and call it "good" when it's not, as it so happens not all players are equal and I'm just simply trying to keep the crowd growing of those who are encouraged to keep playing MWO! <_<

EDIT :: Before I forget, these Event Reviews & Ratings are to provide PGI with useful feedback to help them develop better Future Events that everyone will be attracted to. They are explicitly NOT meant to slap the "'Elite-Type, Competitive-Class Players'" in the face, and you need to quit taking it that way!

and some how I have a 30% and 48% account, and you are tier 1 and see it as a feat. I'm starting to believe Tiers need to be reset, and that they purely are an XP bar. You didn't answer earlier, but did you just recently enable your forum badge in the midst of our forum conversations?

I included everyone - about 30 names - but sorted them by average ranking over past 6 months so that you can see for yourself how many "average" and "above average" pilots there are in that sample (note: "barely above average" still amounts to 80% of the player base).
No, not all players are equal. As the data shows, the worst performing players on that list are in the bottom 30% of the leaderboard. Hence, 70% of the player base should be able to attain that goal - for some it will be easy, for some it will take effort - if given a week to do so as this event does. They don't need to do it multiple times or keep performing excellently, just hit that match score a single time.
Claiming that it's too hard just discourages some of them from even trying.

I would actually agree with this. The way that the Player Base has taken a HUGE decrease to its' numbers, and the way some people have actively manipulated their PSR and PGI's MatchMaker, it effectively has to be recycled from scratch in order to put people all in the right places. Heck, when I was on the PTS, where PSR totally did not matter, I think there were some rather fun matches to be had by everyone involved. Maybe PGI should just get rid of PSR altogether, let the MatchMaker randomize by tonnage, and then the game would balance itself out just by whoever hopped in line that the MatchMaker picked?

Nope... That's been turned on since I was like Tier 3 (or Tier 4, possibly)... And that was more than a year ago... possibly on the order of two years, I think. I have not turned it off since, at least that I can remember. ^_^

I don't like the comparison to your mom, though.

I partially agree on the reset idea but theres one thing that makes me very cautious. Fine, tier 1 isn't a badge of skill but it is a sign that the player should be reasonably experienced at least. It is also a protection for new players and why I've never been a fan of the matchmaker "trawls" getting wider as suddenly you get new players fighting people who potentially are in the top couple of hundred. A great way to pad stats for the top player but not a good experience for the new players. All a reset would do is basically categorise active players.

That said I also think you should have a minimum match count before you start receiving alerts for FW so I can't talk. ;)

FP takes way longer than other game types to complete for grab bags in 5 days. PGI should re-open the Faction Play for the entire duration of the event days not the first 5 days to allow players to complete the challenge for the free Champion Mech.

Scouting worked. You could have kamikazed into the enemy firing 3-4 times to get 100-200 damage.
It was very easy to do those loot bags.
When I quit doing that, I switched to 4 man piranha lances and started winning matches against bushwacker lances.
Sorry you didn't see that a week+ ago!

Which is why PGI should raise the match score requirement to 200 instead of 50. 200 match score in FP would be what, 800 damage? Absolutely doable. Next time they do an event like this, give 4 loot bags per 200 match score game, and an extra 2 loot bags per 50 match score over that, up to a cap of like 500 match score. Would encourage people to try their best in FP instead of suiciding in just to get their bags and get out.

Yes it is not a good thing that they don't specify scouting vs invasion. I played waaay less invasion vs scouting, and the invasion games I played were full of players throwing off the skirmish goal going for loot bags when it made zero sense to do some. Even this guy I replied to didn't know it a week after the fact.
I don't know how scores are calculated in invasion, but I'm guessing it is 1/4 damage vs 1/2 damage in QP?

I'm not sure, but I think it's calculated the same as QP score, but divided by the number of deaths. So you can get like a 1200+ match score game in Faction Play if you don't die and do a lot of damage (take an ER Sniper mech and score over 2K damage, its not too hard on some maps like Alpine) but you can get a match score of like 300 if you do the same damage but lose all 4 mechs.

It's worse than that, people. If you only do about 800 damage, but lose all 4 Mechs, you can sometimes end up with sub-150 Match Score given to you. PGI has continued to fail to fix the Match Score System as to how it handles in Faction Warfare, as it really should only dock you upon your Final Death which puts you out of the Round, and not prior. Even then, it should only dock you once on that Final Death, instead of hitting you once for each time you're downed. So, when PGI tries to turn up the Match Score requirement on Faction-Based Events, it backfires in their faces. People jump out to Scouting in response because they feel like their effort when they're pug-stomped in an Invasion Queue Match is rendered meaningless. Heck, because of how the Match Score is handled in Faction Warfare right now, others try to then manipulate the situation by using their teammates as 'cannon fodder' while they hide in the back to survive with their sniper-type (as in, Gauss Rifles and ER Large Lasers... DEFINITELY NOT LRMs!) weaponry. That's just not right, simply put... If the other team is wrecking you, it should never have hit you 4 times by comparison to what Quick Play does to you on Match Score, and that's why people don't want to play Faction Warfare much at all. You should be able to use your Mechs as needed in a Faction Warfare Match, not get penalized because your Mech got too beat up to keep on using it (or you got stomped out of your Mech before you could use it), which of course makes you have to get a fresh one out of your Drop Deck. This is why the Match Score Requirements for Loot Bags are so low on Faction Warfare Events, because if it were any higher then people would just give up and leave. :(

By the way, if you're finding a teammate deciding to throw themselves into the fire, then get in there instead of hanging back and use their sacrifice to get some Enemy Mechs out of the Match. You might even manage to keep that Friendly Mech alive long enough for their Pilot's Brain to wake up and get with the game. But if that doesn't work, the real culprit of the problem here is PGI having not fixed the Match Score System, as well as their expectation that everyone would be able to reschedule their lives around needing 50 Matches that run about 30 minutes each. Not everyone has 25 Hours in 6 Days (Some people barely have a maximum of 2 Hours per Day or less at best!!!) to devote to Faction Warfare, and if things had been limited to Invasion Queue only, then participation would have been a hell of a lot lower as most players would have seen it as an insurmountable wall that they could never get past. Things like the Pick-A-Prize Champion (C) Heavy Mech and the Faction Camos in an Event like this are NOT meant by PGI to be out of the reach of their Newer Players. PGI set a goal for them to try to hit that was actually somewhat realistic based on PGI's own failings with Match Score Calculations. Yes, people need to NOT Suicide themselves, but many are feeling too choked for time and therefore they resort to equally insane things because they didn't get that Scouting was allowed here. Heck, the way Eisenhorne & BumbaCLot are each acting with just one of their posts in the Quote Chain feels far too much to me like they think they have some entitlement to reschedule other peoples' lives for them, and they simply do NOT. Not everyone is 'Tier 1' when they come into Faction Warfare, and the confidence of players from 'Tier 2' on down can be rather easily shaken, as it so happens they're not confident they could ever hit 1000 damage with 4 Mechs in total because of how their Quick Play games have gone. It's not possible to expect everyone to just be right on your level from the moment they start, as not everyone is capable of doing that!

~Mr. D. V. "Just speaking up for little folk who might read forums, but fail to post because they feel intimidated." Devnull

(p.s.: Hell, I still get games where I'm focused out before I can do any damage whatsoever, and don't get a chance to even reach 100 damage in Faction Warfare, so I seriously get how Faction Warfare Newbies feel.)

If you can't pull 1,000 damage on a regular basis in faction play, then you are doing a bad job playing this game. You need to ask for help in the forums here or on reddit, and get advice on how to properly build a drop deck, or on how to join a unit that will help you. If you have no interest in doing that, then you do not deserve whatever prize PGI is offering for the event.

I apologise if I drop my light mechs that I play well and offer support and targeting and the occasional airstrike. I'll make sure to drop four catapults with 2k lrm ammo each next time so I can actively fail to make a difference. But hey, over 1k damage, right?
