Yay, another match with undergunned "snipers" sitting back. Doing nothing.

I never cared about waiting time, but having my teams being wiped out within 3 minutes of starting, and me doing under 200 damage in each game I tried is no fun. I have no doubts they will make it permanent, so there is no really any incentive to waste time to be fodder for group people. Some of you might like it, sure. But it is not my kink.

But then, I have a backlog of areas to build for another game and backlog of games to play. Perhaps it is time for JA2 again, as usual.

Recently joined MWO last month and put in 150 hours already since i had some free time to waste.

So far 8v8 has been a bigger change than I expected. Not sure if its cause of 4 man groups have more impact but all 9 matches so far have been a stomp fest on my face. Love the concept and nod to better communication and strats but for soloing it is not as forgiving as 12v12. Also I'm not one to Leroy Jenkins in or stand in back and not share armor. I try to be balanced and use my loadout to compliment the team. I am not experienced enough to take command or call shots so if there is no one else who knows the maps better I can only hope our tactics are good enough to overcome poor strategy.

Pros:

Matches fire much faster so far
Strategy and teamwork even more important
Lessons are learned much faster

Cons:

Soloing not as fun
Time to kill and overall match time seem much faster
Longer Range battles (so far)
Tilt meter has more ghost heat (got tilted after 3 matches mostly due to less forgiveness on my mistakes)
Match Score seems to effect Pilot Skill rating differently (lost but had 500 damage and a solo kill but dropped in skill)

Any tips on how to make this more enjoyable outside of forming a group? Like General Loadout strategies that are better for 8v8?

Something that can do a bit of poke, midrange and still hold its own when it comes to the end match brawl. I like the Timberwolf with 2 Lrg Pulse and 5 Er Med.

Awesome that you guys are experimenting with 8v8, and an event queue. However, I believe (and experience first hand that), groups have a disproportionate impact on the match even in 12v12, and particularly in 8v8. I would like to see that in the future, groups are either entirely removed, or reduced in size for the next 8v8 test or event queue.

lol, that's not how math works. The MM will be worse.

id love to see your mm theories tested. id love to see everyone's mm theories tested really. i dont think the population is there for any mm upgrade to really have a huge impact. im not sure its enough to make me show up on patch day. 8v8 is a novelty for me, that gets me to show up, but then again so would a new mech or a lootbag event.

Start by talking to your teammates. Tactics become a lot more important when you are a smaller group of players.
The tonnage seem to be random at the moment so I levitate towards heavy mechs with some capability of taking on lights.

Do you have LRMs on the team? Try to press R whenever you spot a mech.

Try to take down uav:s as you spot them even if the hang above the rest of the team not affecting you.

Look for tactical advice here on the forum there are plenty of threads on the topic.

And if it goes bad, just laugh it off. It is a game after all.
=)
Cheers

Well so far, I've had the entire day off, but have only had two games where more then half of the players on both teams didn't immediately disconnect. Of those matches, I did see I was pretty much the only player on either side not in an 80 ton or above mech. Every match ultimately boiled down to "whoever's got the most LRM boats with high armor and a willingness to risk damaging some of it wins by default, and oh this guy has a medium? Why'd he bother logging in."

Also it's taking a lot longer to find a match via quickplay in general, seemingly, and I'm seeing a lot more players with really high pings, which possibly might be part of why they're all in assaults. I'm told a lot of people are running into issues with rubber banding as well.

Another not fun experience.

Thx.

Oi. Keep ragequitting and suiciding at the start. Somehow, that's actually increasing my odds of winning if you're on my team. Posted Image

Just won another because of your good luck charm!

I love the idea, and I know that it can work great in a comp, but I feel like 4-mans dominate this way too much. Maybe make it cap of two players or have to queue with a full 8-man or something to that effect.

8v8 Best!!!
Finally nascar dies

But, we need to adjust the tonnage for matches - solo and premades.
And raise the level of the pilot's skill after the match.

This seems to be pretty common but it may just be negativity bias. I hope PGI is collecting data so we can see if stomps are more frequent.

Finally something different for once is happening to MWO.

I feel like 8v8 is the right size for a match. There's many pros to this and the cons can be fixed more or less easily.

+ Skirmishing and brawling are much more prevalent now that you CAN brawl without half your mech deleted in half a second by 5 laser boats.

+ Less people on the ground not only means less obnoxious bodyblocking, but also less intel on flankers. Positioning and flanking suddenly are much more commonplace. Punishing long range builds, which are by far the most common builds in mid to high tiers, is easier now thanks to that.

+ Less utilized weapon systems like RACs are much more competitive now thanks to fewer DPS on the board shutting them down.

+ Less nascar thanks to lower dps on the board. movement feels more "smallscale" and meaningful rather than the usual marching around.

- Matchmaker definetely needs some tuning, which is to be expected. Had a few rounds with just 1 assault and 1 heavy while the rest were all light/mediums so we couldn't get a frontline going nor backstab them due to lacking pressure from the front.

- Premades now have even more power over the outcome of a match.

- Clueless assault players have even more power over the outcome of a match, especially in Domination mode.

All in all i think this is a positive change.

Their announcement post states that data collection is the entire point of this 8v8 trial.

For the whole time of the game 8 vs 8, 1 premade in the group never decided anything. 2 premades in synchrodrop solved it. At least I didn't feel that way.

Is it too hard to add an option that gives you a choice if you want to play 8vs8 or not?

And what about the match score, did you make any adjustments?

Based off of this poll from last year (or whenever)

Should MWO:S7 switch Quick Play to 8v8
 • Yes (1927 votes [47.73%])
 • No (1945 votes [48.18%])
 • Maybe - Let me explain in the thread. (165 votes [4.09%])

Why would you, PGI, split the player base up again? If ~50% of respondents said no, you do realize that you will most likely lose a vast majority of them when you CHANGE the game against what they stated they did not want, right? You are leaving them no reason to stay, play, spend money, or promote the game. I have never seen another company do this successfully, in any industry. I just don't see how this is going to expand the player base or get more people to play, old or new...
