This 8 player is ok but it doesn't work with 4 a man premade. Drop the group queue and let the single players drop together. then the 4 mans can slug it out.
The MM is failing horribly with the uneven weight distribution.
I don't think people will care if they have to wait a minute longer to get into a match that is challenging.
Having single PUG drops will give the MM something to balance.
Just my 2 cents
This weigh problem is hilarious..

this is a foolish idea. especially keeping in groups. either separate group from solo and have groups be 8v8 with max of 4 man and the option for solo players to opt in so matches can be found, or leave it as is. matchmaker already struggles to put teams of equal skill against each other, and fails 95% of the time.

We are working on a Feature called Event Mode Queue.
When we add the feature to the game we will be able to control Groups for the Event Mode Queue separately.
The current design will allow us to Force Groups, have smaller Groups, or no groups in the Event Mode Queue.

Please Keep in mind we are only doing this for this weekend Posted Image

Matt.... How can we take your word, you are only tier 5 :) /ducks Posted Image
  • For future possible "event" for 8vs8, drop max group size to 3
  • Restrict group to 1 mech/weight class
  • And if need more time, change the MM back from the Tonnage consideration (Group queue setup ) to matching weight classes on both sides. With the Restrict group to 1 mech/weight class that should allow for matchups, in similar manner that we had after the MM was opened up in the Solo queue, opening valves quicker from the 3+3+3+3.

My friends and I are not organized comp players and get our butts handed to us all the time. If you want 8v8 there is already a Comp mode.
I'm not complaining that others like you want this change. Please feel free. If I don't like it, I just won't play or spend money on it. I'm just a customer and if I find I don't like a product, I don't buy it. No need to get agitated.

Comp queue isn’t open right now, but regardless, I actually don’t care that much whether it’s 12v12 or 8v8, but your entire premise is “I don’t want difficult opponents” which is just ridiculous… it’s a PvP game.

In theory 8v8 would and should feel better as you have more influence over a match as an individual pilot .But combine 8v8 with 4 mans being allowed (50% undiluted SOUP) and the inability of MM to balance groups against groups or pugs against groups this is gonna end up being omega poo5p ....

It should have been reduced to 2 mans for the sake of testing at least. The tonnage disbalance seems to be even worse that what we have seen so far.

The whole point of soup queue was to maintain player retention among people who drop in groups. They enjoyed playing as a team vs up to 12 solo players, surely they'd have vastly more fun as teams vs a smaller number of players more equal to the size of their drop group.

Just as a short sample, I've just played a bunch games just now and each match was over within four minutes, sometimes a little over four minutes. The winning side typically loses 0-1 mechs vs the losers necessarily getting a clean sweep every time.
If you figure in the couple of minutes it typically takes to walk in from spawn points and start poking... that's just super efficient; Premades will be able to get through many more matches and really only suffer a loss... well, I don't know how a premade might lose... I guess if they just start doing really silly things, but it's a game, they should have fun!

8v8 is terrible. I cannot remember the last time I was this frustrated with the game. I will play again when it is back to 12v12. I have had nothing but terrible matches that are completely lopsided. You will need to rework the player skill system for something like this to work. Good by for the weekend.

Greetings MechWarriors,

I just wanted to address some of the feedback and/or concerns we've received regarding this 8v8 weekend event:
  • Yes we're aware we should have provided some heads-up to this event coming, our apologies on that.
  • This was a PGI initiative for data purposes (see below) and not a Cauldron suggestion etc.
  • This is not permanent, it will end with the Patch on Tuesday at 10am Pacific Time.
  • While there has been discussion in the past regarding reverting Quick Play back to the original 8v8 we had at launch, this event is specifically for gathering data for an upcoming Event Mode Queue (more on that coming soon). That being said, if the discussion of permanently reverting back to 8v8 were to come up again, we're now gathering more recent data and feedback.
  • Yes, we understand that 4-person groups have a lot of influence in 12v12 matches and even more in 8v8, and that is being taken into consideration as well.
  • Some have expressed concerns that we launched this event while running two other events that have match score requirements. We will be adding 7 days to each of those events.
  • After this event I will post a new feedback thread on the forum, please participate!

This is the kind of foresight and logic from PGI that we've come to rely upon. Good to know that after beginning a test you'll consider key components of that test, and maybe later consider the base metrics that you might look for in performing tests.
Not even being aware of the existence or impact of premades in a smaller queue is *chef's kiss*

8v8 might be fun for special use cases, but I think the core QP experience should remain 12v12. 8v8 still has most of 12v12's problems, with match balance issues being worse:
  • Higher probability of significant skill and tonnage imbalances between teams
  • Each disco/AFK is a 50% bigger disadvantage than before
  • The influence of groups is significantly amplified
8v8 QP would also need other work on match scoring, spawn points, map sizes, and probably other stuff.

Regardless of any debate on match size, the game still desperately needs these two things:
  • Update match-maker to balance the teams based primarily on player skill (from ranking rather than PSR/Tier) and secondarily on tonnage
  • Optimise the game engine to improve performance and stability (I crashed 3 times yesterday)
Edited to add: If PGI had given a little advanced notice of this event, the community could have pointed out the obvious problems with it and you could have taken some steps to mitigate them (e.g. limiting group size to 2).

I was there at the beta testing phase of this game before it launched fully.

You asked for pilots to help test your concepts back then and I gave it to you.

You need my help testing new concepts again?

I've got your back!

I'm not about to give up on you now.

Thanks for keeping the servers on so I can keep playing this great game.

Often games that claim "early access" will do experiments like this, the excuse being they are trying to perfect their game. This, however, is not that. You have paying customers and your are summarily making changes to gameplay with zero warning. The idea that giving players advance notice "slipped you mind" is nonsense or complete incompetence. You have been doing this for almost a decade making the same mistakes over and over is silly.

I'll check out 8v8 hopefully the metrics you get will help improve the game. But I would like to see Free For All and some QP re-spawn mechanic maybe like War Thunder's re-spawns.

Can’t roll my eyes any harder.

I would imagine the mode would return to what it was previously, where group and solo were separated again if the test achieves what PGI has set out to see.

I have played this Game for many many years as well as the board game since it was called Battledroids (yes I'm that old) and I will tell you 8v8 is probably the worst thing you have ever done to this game. Old school Battletech drops where 4v4 or 12v12 that means lance vs lance or company vs company witch allows for a more balance drop tonnage. Not a fan of this at all.
