I absolutely LOVE my Direwoof hence teh name and I do tremendous damage in it but it's very much a glass cannon. I feel like I live about 2x as long in my Fafnir or Atlas. When I play teh Kodiak and Direwoof I feel like I have the armour of a grasshopper but am the size of an atlas. Are they ever going to give the clan mechs qvirks?

Go big or go home.

Either stare them down with dakka that they refuse to fight, or use overwhelming pinpoint damage using 2x Gauss + fuckton of lasers.

In fact my best-performing Direwolf is actually 2x GR + 2x ERLL + 6x ERML. Hot as ****, but they won't argue with 95 pinpoint damage. Yeah it could be 2x LPL + 4x ERML, but I like synchronicity of ERLLs + ERMLs better, and ERLL lets you poke farther.

Well that is your problem. Build 3x UAC5 + 2x UAC10. **** the small lasers, you have enough ammo.

<Wall of text warning!>

Hey Direwoof, nice name Posted Image

Dire Wolf is my favorite mech chassis, and I'm almost jumping up and down with the recent April 2022 MWO/Cauldron patch, giving DWF very sweet CT bonuses, and +25% Radar Deprivation to boot!
https://mwomercs.com...530-19april2022
https://mwomercs.com...auldron-changes

One general point: never face more than 1 mech at the same time in a fight!
Heck, even an Atlas will die quickly if focus fired upon. So DWF dies even quicker too when focus fired upon also!

Dire Wolf with LT/RT +armor +quirk bonuses, with both arms with +armor bonuses is much tougher!

In general, Dire Wolf Torso/Arm parts LT/RT/LA/RT with single weapon hardpoints have more armor bonuses!
You can bump your DWF LT/RT up to 100 armor with the right LT/RT + maximum armor Skill Nodes, as below:

Ballistic DWF:
LT of DWF-B: +10 armor, +5% velocity. 1x ballistic hardpoint.
RT of DWF-W: +15 armor. 1x ballistic hardpoint.
LA of DWF-W: +10 armor. 1x ballistic hardpoint.
RA of DWF-B: +10 armor. 1x ballistic hardpoint.
Note: Or use DWF-UV hero arms: 2x ballistic hardpoints in each arm. No armor bonuses though.
Builds ideas:
2x UAC20 + 2x UAC10 (careful of ghost heat)
UAC20 + LBX20 + 2x UAC10
2x UAC10 + 3x UAC5
UAC20 + UAC10 + 3x UAC5 (very limited ammo)
4x LBX10 + 6x erSML Laser (DWF-Prime arms)
2x LBX20 + 2x LBX10 (that's my signature LBX60 build)

Energy DWF:
LT of DWF-Prime: +18 armor, -5% Heat Gen.
RT of DWF-Prime: +18 armor, -5% Heat Gen.
Arms: probably use DWF-Prime arms. No armor bonuses though.
Build ideas: typically ERLL builds. DWF-Prime CT energy bonuses are now pretty sweat also!

General DWF:
LT of DWF-W: +18 armor, +10% Range. 1x Missile hardpoint (and you'll probably will not use missiles)
RT of DWF-A: +18 armor, -10% Cooldown(!), 1x AMS hardpoint; no weapon hardpoints.
Arms: Ballistic: probably use DWF-UV hero arms. 2x ballistic hardpoints in each arm, with no armor bonus.
Arms: Energy: probably use DWF-Prime arms. No armor bonuses though.
Build ideas:
2x Gauss + 2x LPL + 4x ERML
2x Gauss + 4x ERLL (careful of ghost heat!)
2x UAC10 + 2x ERLL + 6x ERML
4x LBX10 (all weapons are in both DWF-UV arms)

Advanced DWF:
Deadside 2x Gauss + 4x ERLL build, by DATA:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUVCjT9Zbr0
(If you watch 3 of DATA's YouTube videos, you figure out this build!)

Dire Wolf Legs: nice attractive ones, but not in the way that you might think Posted Image
DWF-B: +9 structure bonus legs
DWF-Prime: +9 armor bonus legs
~I personally use other DWF legs, for its +acceleration, +turn, +JJ_burn_time, etc.

No. Clan assaults are not supposed to be tanky, they're supposed to deal high damage and farm big numbers but die like wet toilet paper. If you want a real man's assault, get the Scorch (moderately tanky clan assault), an Annihilator, an Atlas, a charger, a stalker.

Up on Melancholy Hill
Sits a Direwhale
Just looking out for the day

So call in the light mechs
Round the world we'll go

Does anybody know, love
we're looking out on the day
Of another direwhale?

When you close to death.

Clan assaults aren't squishy. They are immobile.

Ever notice how easy it is to kill mechs that are standing still? Most of the truly tanky mechs have good agility. It's why people complain about lights.

Clan 'mechs get equipment that's smaller, lighter and harder hitting than similar Inner Sphere equipment, so IS 'mechs get quirks to make up for the difference in tech.

Clan assaults only feel "squishy" because they're the most feared and the most likely to be focused on because they're often the biggest threats on the field. Direwhale has always been like that. The problem is more and more mechs can confront them head on and dish out high alphas compared to when they first appeared.

I find everything feels squishy when it gets constantly pummeled; it's not about Clan Assault, it's about mechs that feel like they are frozen in time and just can't stop getting shot. Personally my lowest performing mech class, by far, is assaults, and that's why. Not getting hit at all is better than being able to take a hit. When the competition gets at all tough, my assaults stay in the mech garage and I'm running around in mechs weighing 50 tons or less.

in terms of W/L, yes, but you've got your highest AMS and second-highest KDR in assaults, this month at least.

Me standing here in my Atlas, with ac20 and 3 smr6, watching clan assaults crying about being under powered. Ironic.

Truth be told it would still be enough to tear through at least tho direwhales, so OP isn't wrong. Direwhales have some terrible hit boxes and geometry.

It's a choice between firepower and survivability. Clan mechs prioritize firepower.
