Why would they do something so complicated when they can just block the line working from user.cfg? That is most likely one value change in a text file.

Because if its that simple it should have been done long long ago. Maybe it is that simple but other factors kept it from being done. It's not like pgi hasn't been aware the entire time. Well, they are making an official statement in the next few days so I guess we will see.

A few points on this topic to my knowledge, having found / popularized quite a few of the controversial CFG lines:

- PGI has (recently) removed actually problematic lines from the CFG, so if they viewed the ones in Gee's video as a problem, they could remove them to.
- I've checked the config Gee provided (and will probably write a long addition-comment), and to my knowledge, there isn't anything left that people keep secret.
- Most of the "problematic" lines were only found somewhat recently, the oldest being tree removal in mid 2021. I think it's only been in the past few months that the people who dig into CFG stuff have finally gotten a somewhat complete understanding of it. (CryEngine 3 documentation kinda sucks.)
- While researching the CFG lines, I've passed on multiple problematic lines to Cauldron/PGI, and some of them got removed, some didn't (for example the tree removal).

I'm personally happy to see the video as it is, since it actually has a chance to even the odds, especially for comp.
And you know, if enough people agree that these variables should be locked, maybe PGI will come around and do it.

Why? We are discussing here nothing that is against TOS.

3. The abnegation of concepts that were likely taken for granted (visual cover, camo, etc) via this advantage-seeking behavior and how it impacts not just the comp scene but the general QP environment most of the players inhabit and interact with each other in across multiple tiers

... except, as was also proven in this thread, the issue affects only two maps and one of them barely at that.

It's been demonstrated repeatedly that cheating is no substitute for knowledge and talent, but it's still an evil behavior. Ethic and principle is important.

Dude, you're the one arguing that it completely negates visual cover, not me. Which it, quite clearly, doesn't.

In fact, this year's comp queue is entirely unaffected because neither of the maps in question is part of the map rotation: you have Hibernal Rift, Mining Collective, Crimson Strait, Polar Highlands and Rubellite Oasis

Just to chime in here: one of the very first things I did when I started playing this game a year ago was search for config file edits. This isn't some arcane knowledge, this is basic stuff you do while playing any pvp FPS since Quake (which came out almost 30 years ago).

Anyways, the search yielded immediate results thanks to Mr. Vaad's excellent MWOConfig tool (which has been pinned in this very forum for at least 2 years apparently, and his config edits well before then).

Anyways, and maybe this is just semantics, but some of you really need to discern between "cheating" and "exploit". I'm not a fan of some of the things that can apparently be edited, but that's on PGI for not blacklisting those commands, or the artists for utilizing the parameters, or whatever. If it's truly not intended, then it shouldn't work. That said, if it's available to all, then it is not a cheat, but rather an exploit.

This is one thing I have been wondering, most players (That I know at least are not Young, most people are +-40) and people of that age should be familiar with command console that Quake, HL --> CS and almost every game used and so configuring user.cfg shouldn't be some space magic.

But maybe most of the playerbase are console potatoes who just happened to buy stock PC and asked shop to install MWO.

Well this says more about you as a person than it does others. Some of us didn't spend our lives 'spanking their monkeys' over hax and codes in their mother's basement.

While you were playing Quake, I was out with girlfriends at gigs or playing sports or socialising with friends.

Using your logic, I should naturally assume that everyone over 40 can name the scientific names of hundreds of plants and animals. On Thursday I think i'll have a crack at brain surgery. I'm over 40 now; and entitled enough to think that everyone can do it!!!

Wake up and smell the roses.

Otherwise, I agree with Check Engine Light in his responses so far and await PGI's statement with interest.

Z.

This isn't Quake. This is (well, in THEORY) a MMOG. I don't really find the comparison helpful.

In that same theory level Quake is also MMOG, it also had single player game like most of the games of that era and long time after.
Both are online shooters, both can be edited to be more functional through .cfg files.

Z.

It doesn't tell anything about me except I'm not total monkey with computers like you.
FYI I have never cheated in digital or real sports, I have no need to do so.

******* wannabe "alpha male" complex, with that same logic I can assume you don't have girlfriend/wife anymore, your friends have abandoned you and you don't do any sports nowadays because you play MWO.

I'd say you being in mechwarrior game forum which is loosely based on battletech is worst place possible where you can pull that school bully **** you nerds card.

edit: typo

Well not much has changed on the Forum where forum warrior wars and insults are always present so maybe it's time to lock this topic for good.

Yeah sorry I take it bit personally if I'm talking about this game and something I think can compare to user.cfg editing in the past in civilized way IMO. And some clown starts to call me no life ****** in my mothers basement because I have know how to do +mlook in quake.
And I wouldn't call someone with less than 150 posts forum warrior, just random clown in this case.

Online servers and multiplay are not the sole criteria being considered here.

is "here" where you are located or?
Multiplayer game checked.
Arena shooter checked.
Command console/cfg files to make game fully functional checked.

It is irrelevant in this comparison that MWO isn't offline or that it doesn't have singleplayer (which it really has called tutorial)

Here as in THIS GAME. A completely online client, that has expressly forbidden even minor GUI alterations in the past. A game that is not a peer to peer hosted game, nor is modding the cfg required for full functionality.

GUI? Who is talking about GUI?
Yes dedicated servers were a thing even back in the day...
For some it is because not everyone has that OLD four Years old PC like you, I have 10 Years old PC like I have mentioned multiple times in this thread but some of you just cannot accept that people play this game with old computers and yes it requires some tweaking to get decent FPS AND because I know you will go there next... No I have not removed trees or fogs or other stuff like that because like I said in post #4 in this thread I think that is cheating.

You're not accessing training grounds without passing through authentication servers.

Whats your point?

That's straight up dishonesty on your part.

What is?

PS. one question did you use mouse to aim both X and Y axis in OG Quake?

Yeah this is ********, you shouldnt be able to get a gameplay advantage by removing graphical featrures like this.

If performance on old PCs is a concern, alter it so the configs replace stuff with rectangular sprites or something, instead of removing it. Id be willing to bet that many of those 'old PCs' would suddenly not be so bad anymore. (the game is 12 years old. A potato could run it fine in 1920x1080)
