It's college football saturday. Haven't figured out how to make a passable gold yet, so my Notre Dame Atlas has to wait.

I'm using GIMP 2 and trying to paint a Victor.
In the past I've added filters, colors, and even layers containing cammo patterns (real world and ones I designed) without it spilling over the background.

i usually do about 10 repaints with 'em, in a variety of designs, and once I'm satisfied I turn 'em loose.

I believe he's talking about the parts of armor that you'll normally paint. Rather than having the joints too, you know the template you use to make sure you don't paint onto the actuators and junk. "non slip" (At least that's what i think he means.)

ah. As a noob, I call it the plating, or "armor template", lol.
And as a poor noob, since GIMP doesn't seem to recognize the layers, I always just upload both, separate.

Ah, not quite. I'm referring to these:
You'll notice them on a number of 'mechs in game.

I think you get it. It's not part of the armor per se, but something placed over the armor, so that the mechanics working on 'mechs don't slip off. Below are a couple examples of how these could be rearranged.
More on the right...
A few on the shoulders, one by the cockpit.
