This is awesome! I kind of want to throw more dynamic shadows on it to match the lighting of the environment.
I guess I'll do the bright orange HIT ME Home Depot mech as well. Free Hayden up to work on the in-universe stuff while I handle some hilarious shenanigans.

I'm re-exporting it with the music track removed, so it'll be updated sometime in the next 48 hours to actually include some deranged rambling.
The first 16 minutes are actually just me selecting the mech, I left it in because you should be prepared to take some time to do this part. You only have to do it once. Then they gutted the audio so that doesn't matter anymore. I'll record it when I do my next recolor so you guys can check that out as well.
Alright, shortened go with accompanying ramblings has been uploaded and is available here. I'll field questions I guess.
OH WAIT, I CAN EMBED THINGS!

It took about 45 minutes, plus how long it took to mask everything.

Nice mech Cake Bandit, but it is rushed, right?
The details of it's right foot are uncompleted.
A reall nice mech, though.
Yes, it's hurried because I was recording and wanted to try to keep the time low for the upload.
But oddly enough the right foot already washes out into this sort of gray shade instead of the crisp blacks of the rest of the pieces. It's actually sort of wonky in its own right. It doesn't really like to work well with the blending layers, but I'll go through and fix it up one of these days.
Also, I didn't find out about layer masks until after I'd started using photoshop, so I can't say if it's the same process to get to them.
You might have to go through options from the layers drop down.

So I've gotten as far as creating the 2nd layer, White 1. However when I try to paint the 'Mech, nothing happens. I have to select the Background layer to white it out. I'm using GIMP, if that helps.
For some reason your video made a few things click. I guess I have to see how things are done before I get the concept.

My second thought is to ask about what blending mode you have the layer set to.
My third thought is have you accidentally selected the layer mask itself to paint white? That happens from time to time. I address that in the next video a little. It's at 50% and has been uploading since roughly seven in the morning.
My fourth thought is that the change on the second white layer is pretty subtle. And if you duplicated the layer beneath it, after painting on it, you might have already duplicated the white from the layer beneath making painting unnecessary.
Toggle layer visibility, and maybe use a magic wand selection outside the area you've been trying to paint and look where the marching ants end up.
