Well, sorry that you were offended by something some of the 160,000 people on the forums did. That sounds pretty ******. However, I would urge you to judge each of us on our own merits or lack thereof.

Mr. Zimicks:
Sorry to hear of your mother's passing away from cancer. The Word of Lowtax extends it's deepest condolences for your loss.
However, this is a question and answer thread, and I fail to see the question that you are asking The Word of Lowtax. Perhaps if you asked a question, you could receive an answer (and not go against the wishes of Moderator Helmer who kept this thread open)!
Also please do not conflate any other group in any other game that uses the term "Goon Squad". We do not have sole province of that term (the Princess Bride used it first), although if we could, we would strongly consider trademarking™ it.
Thanks for posting.

First, you paint a picture of the world that has no nuance, which anyone with the slightest intelligence can see is false, dangerous, misleading and will only cause you and others frustration and pain. The world is nuanced, people are nuanced, and trying to view the world through some simplistic black-and-white lens means actively giving up all of that fantastic brain-power that evolution has given you. You will continually make bad decisions if you don't recognize the reality in front of you, and any kind of black-and-white perspective doesn't recognize reality.
Second, you are actively ruining the perception others will have of you, since everyone who is willing to think, and form a nuanced picture of the group in question, will see you as a narrow-minded, naive, fool. So not only are you actively disregarding your brain's capacity for logical, rational, nuanced thought, you are also portraying yourself quite clearly, to intelligent people everywhere, as someone who willingly does that. In other words, others will see the nuanced picture that you refuse to, and judge you for disregarding it.
So, in conclusion, don't judge groups of people by the behavior of individuals. Evolution gave you the ability to distinguish individuals from each other, and if you refuse to use that ability then you are actively hurting yourself.

First of all I will keep my personal judgment of whether they (whoever they are, as there seems to be either divisions in their name or just people who just claim to belong to it) are here to ruin the game as many claim or not, until I can make that judgement, which means, when the game (houses and all) is released and has been given time for all these factions and feuds to grow.
Regardless of what happens, I think it is going to make the game better; If they are not actually good, then they will be known for being just talkers, until they change that around, which will also be a storyline, our own storyline.
If their house (Liao) is divided, then that will also make for part of the story/game, they might have some sort of a civil war and so on.
If they are actually good and become big or very big (as some seem to worry), then they will be known for it and maybe other houses might make a temporary alliance and join together to take them down or call on/pay mercs to help etc
You have to let your imagination do the work.

And here's the thing - if everyone decided we had to be destroyed and banded together to do it - it would be GLORIOUS. We'd probably lose, but man it'd be fun losing. Who doesn't love a desperate last stand? Is there a planet Rourke's Drift? We totally need to occupy it.

This is really the part of the game I would be the most excited about.
Holed up, desperate, ready to die at a moments notice.
Look across at the stoic metal face of my lancemates, see the worry in their cold diodic eyes, but also sense the great determination and swelling comraderie as we know we will kill, and be killed, but never falter for even a moment.
The war will be glorious, and the last thing echoing across the battlefield will be our defiant cries, shouting The Word until the last light blinks out.
Squawk.

After such an elaborate buildup, you're implication there are only "goons" or "people who are afraid of them" kinda gives away your afiliation.

Second, I have no "affiliation". This whole post is about weighing my "affiliation". I am not a "Goon"; I haven't read SA in many years--pre-"Goon" I think; I don't play Eve Online and I know none of them. I also don't hate them because of reputation, any more than I hate anyone else because of reputation.
Third (and I haven't read the Ask a Goon thread yet), the people who are "afraid of them" here (or insert angry, pissed off, whatever) are, by and large, kind of...um...well. "Ignore them and they'll go away" doesn't seem to be sound advice to me. I definitely appreciate the analysis of personal experiences with them on both sides.
Fourth...well, if there are thousands of them...a lot of them are going to be 'me too's' forming a mob mentality where their will be examples of people doing crazy, screwed-up crap just to get a measure of peer approval or their five-minutes-of-fame in their own community. It also doesn't seem to be very well organized, in terms of holding all Goons accountable for the actions of some of them. That "some" might be 40, 50, whatever percent, but since it looks like anyone can call themselves a Goon, how do you hold them accountable as a whole? Most (insert your least liked sports team here) fans might be dicks, but that doesn't mean that all of them are, or even that they're organized beyond anything but a general feeling towards a sports team.
I realize I'm sounding like a defender of the Goons here a bit, which is gonna make people think I am one. I'm not. I just don't see the problem, yet, even if what happened on Eve implies a systemic griefing and desire to make other people not have fun.

Ultimately, if people are disliking us as a group for stuff that we as a group have done, it's not something any of us can argue with really. These threads are useful because they allow people to see we're not an undifferentiated mass - there are subtle shades of goonery varying from "mild git" all the way up to "huge douchenozzle". That goon that ganked you in SWG back in the day isn't the same as the one who just honoured his offer to leave you standing if you powered down. Also that one that helped you in WOW isn't the same one that just bellowed SQUAWK at you, took out your arms and one leg and left you stranded while he caps the point (all the while telling you that You Have Been Spared By The Word").
Thanks for making the thread anyway - we ARE terrible people, but only for a given value of terrible.
