I tried the game again.

The instruction video helped a bit. But the game's targeting sucks.
The graphics are nice. I might try this game again when you will permit 3rd person view
Oh the game is also a pile on the noob fest. but if that make you feel better about yourself. Go ahead drive away the casual gamer and their $$

I do not expect this game to last more then a year.

Greetings - another potential new player here. The above quote deals with something I saw a fair amount of while checking out the various threads on the forums - mainly, bashing the noobs and making them feel like idiots while they try and learn a new game. I realize a lot of people have a lot more experience at this particular game than me, cool - but dumping on a new player will drive them and their business off faster than anything, and while the majority of players are probably helpful, I'm seeing a lot of bashing already and that's leading me to think I don't want to get involved in this game! I'm not exactly a delicate flower, I can take the good natured hazing, but nobody likes to be made to feel stupid while they're trying to learn something new.

I'd like to learn, have some fun, and improve -that takes time.

I guess my questions are: Is the noob-bashing in game as bad as it is in the forums? Am I just going to regularly get trashed by higher ranked experienced players while I'm learning? And is there a way for newer players to play against players of similar skill levels and/or ranks without getting insta-trashed by more powerful players?

You asked a lot of questions at once, so let's take them one at a time.

It depends on what section of the forums you're talking about, and what you mean by noob bashing. Assuming the definition of 'bashing' you're using is 'being insulted and made to feel generally stupid', then no. People are too busy trying not to die, or to get kills, in game, the bashing doesn't often happen. And when it happens, it usually only does near the end of the match, and when people do some particularly wrong things. Generally speaking, people don't bash players who follow advice, they bash those who are told repeatedly certain things in chat - not to fire LRMs within 180 metres, not to fire PPCs within 90 metres, not to fire weapons outside maximum range, to return to base to stop the cap, not to shoot at people of your own team, not to suicidally charge the enemy team without support - and yet, don't listen. It's more a less a reaction in frustration at those who don't know the game well and refuse to learn to know the game. If you have an open mindset, the chance you're going to be bashed ingame is very much lower than in here. In the games I was in, with few exceptions, usually players who say they're new and ask for advice get some useful advice at the start of the match. Sometimes, maybe a bit too much advice to take in at a go. But they're generally quite helpful unless you try really hard to annoy them.

There isn't a 'rank' for players per se, and playstats are viewable only by yourself, so it may be difficult to know at a glance who are the best pilots and who are the newest/worst/most laggy/lowest framerate ones. If you're going against a pilot of greater skill with an equal build, then yes, you will get trashed by them in a one on one fight. This is unavoidable in any game that uses skill as a means to determining victory - you will start out losing for a while first. This is if you're talking about single fights. If you're talking about 'constantly losing' then no, you're not going to. Because matchmaking is random, you will generally be placed into good teams as often as you are placed into bad teams, so the win/loss ratio will average out at about one. How high above one or how low below it is an indicator, albeit not a very accurate one, of how good a player you are - since that is the only thing that is constant in all your games.

Because the matchmaker is random, you will tend to get more or less even distribution of good players on yours, or on the opposing team. If you're talking about a way to eliminate the good players entirely - no, there is no such mode yet. There are plenty of guides here on the forums, and on the Game page as well - do go check them out prior to starting a drop. If you don't understand something, play a game and try to figure out what the author meant in context of the game. That would be the fastest way to learn.

There are a vocal minority who insist on abusing and demeaning others, but they are not the majority.
Welcome to the game, and do not let any ***-hats you encounter keep ya down.

Find a group to play with on TS in in a Merc Group and your play experience will be so much better and you will not have to deal with haters so much.

Good luck!

Hello, another new guy. I jumped in and played a few matches, even managed to survive the first one.

I've looked at some of the stuff on the forum here, and I have to say that even with some advice in mind, the learning curve is going to be steep. (I got toasted in the other two matches.) I'm using a keyboard and mouse right now, and I was wondering if using a joystick is easier.

Differs for different people I guess, but for most people I think the KB+mouse method is easier.

People like joysticks for the immersion though. Especially the Razer Artemis kind of joystick.

Is there an in-game tutorial of any kind? If not, will there be one soon?

It's in open beta - so any C-Bills you earn or Mechs that you buy will be your forever. So the game is more or less released already.

Community Warfare (the 'release') should be 3-5 months from now, according to earlier estimates from PGI.

Hello Guys!! I'm a new here but have been playing for about 2 weeks or so... still not very good yet but i keep trying. Just wanted to say hi and let you know how great I think this game will be when we get the whole thing. Dating myself, but used to play Battletech when I younger and found this surfing so I had to play. Also, game worked better before the patch--little buggy now but still great.

Hi guys,
old guy reporting in.

I've been a fan of Mechwarrior since the early days, read all the books in school and have been playing it forever, starting with Earth Siege up until Mechwarrior 3025 (anybody still there from those good old days?).

Downloading the client right now, let's see if it can hold up to MW3025, which I thought was already pretty awesome back in the day. B)

You can buy cosmetics, mech bays, and mechs directly. You can indirectly buy anything else by buying a mech with MC and selling it for C-bills, then use the C-bills to buy what your MC could not including: weapons, ammo, armor, upgrades and so forth.

Personally I wouldn't recommend it. It would probably be better to activate premium time instead, and use the increased C-Bills/XP from there, rather than to buy a mech directly.

After accounting for repair costs, the Premium Time modifier almost doubles your profit per game. Overall, it'll be more MC efficient.
