Exactly. You are still helping your team, not running away, hiding in a corner and powering down.

It's like Kenny Rogers sings

"You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run."

Your team is outnumbered. Your weapons are gone. Ammo is expended. 4+ enemies versus one or two defenders..and your best weapon is an AC/2.

Why are you still fighting? Embrace reality. Your assault mech with two medium lasers left, or your weaponless Commando, isn't going to save the day. For most matches, the moment the enemy outnumbers you by 3 or more 'Mechs, the match is almost certainly not going in your favor. So, embrace defeat. Be a smart mercenary, and start thinking about your wallet, not your pride.

Run! Hide. Announce to all that your base is open for the taking, that you won't defend it, and no one need any more repair costs. if your fellow survivors don't agree, too bad for them. Leave them to their fate, and take care of yourself. if they are with you, group up in a good position as far from your base as possible, tell your enemy they can have an unresisted capture, or risk damage by coming after you.

End the game, save your repair costs, free up the already dead players 'Mechs so they can get them into another game quicker instead of them waiting futily.

No need to drag out a boring circle chase or hide and go seek hunt. Capping gives a better reward, so let the enemy enjoy that. Your dead teamamtes aren't going to be hurt by it. Getting one more mech kill, if you are lucky, isn't worth the risk. and your near certain destruction.

And by the way, if you are on the lucky winning team in a 6-0 curbstomping. why are you running around looking for the last two opponents? Go capture the base already, and end the game. If a defender is crazy enough to defend his base, he'll pay the price. Otherwise, go cap, end the match, and enjoy the benefits.

Profit is the goal, and no one profits from pointless defenses.

so much for being a team player...what was your name again...ah ok, same name in game?

Giving up doesn't mean you are not a team player. When the rest of your team is dead, you are on your own. I'm not talking about giving up while the issue is in doubt, or victory is realistically possible.

I'll do this too--when theres a team out there left fighting. If its just me, or me and one other versus eight, different story.

I've offered Zellbrigen many times to the last remaining one or two guys. They never take me up on it. It's so damn hard to get a good duel in this game. Zell is a great gesture and gives the survivors a legitimate chance at survival. If they beat me in a duel, the other guys would certainly let them live--sort of like earning a reprieve or becoming a pseudo bondsman.

Sadly, very few people in MWO give a crap about Battletech RP. :)

We in the ELPMC tend to allow for an honorable end to things, we generally offer a surrender to the last man standing should we be in a full 8 man team.

We've had takers, they power down, we move to the base and cap on good faith.

If they keep firing, we waste them.

That being said, I try to fight to the end, if I have most of my weapons blown off and I'm down to a single medium laser, that's still 5 points of damage a shot I'm putting on target, and i have managed to get lucky critical damage shots in like this. I've made it out alive by running off and base capping the enemy team.

Frankly, I get both sides, the fight's not over till it's over and all that.

Its a game, there's no need to waste people's time.

If someone tells me its over I'll generally stop fighting...Usually when its just me vs 5+.

Nice thing about being an atlas pilot, you have so much potential damage that it's never impossible to win even against 8 other atlases.

Given I'm talking about a situation when the rest of the team is dead, how do you manage that? As for team killing--thats real smart. Noob smart.

Going out in a blaze of glory is usually quicker than waiting for them to cap, or worse still powering down somewhere they can't find you. (You know there's teams that try to find you rather than moving straight to the cap at that point.)

I'm sure when its 8 on 2, you have time to go hunt down and vent your rage on the team mate who isn't choosing to join you in suicide. Please, let me know how wel that works for you in the future.

Incidentally, I pay more attention a different part of that Kenny Rogers song:

"You never count your money when you're sitting at the table,
there'll be time enough for counting when the dealing's done."

You talked about abandoning your team well before you were the last survivor.

This, for instance, could be 8v5 (which, thanks to disconnects, we've sometimes STARTED a game with... and still won.

Well before? Really. When you are the next to last survivor, I'm not sure hwo that is 'well before'. I've tried to be clear I'm talking about hopeless situations, when your team is out of the fight and almost wiped out or if you are the soul survivor.

And I've not advocated quitting that type of fight.

And you talk specifically about abandoning your fellow teammates:

Refusing to join one other survivor in a futile suicide is not abandoning them. If they want to fight on and get killed in a hopeless fight, that is their choice. I have no obligation to get killed when there is no chance of victory.

I'll cheerfully discuss the subject, but I wont waste time with straw man arguments. So to be clear: I'm talking about situations where victory is out of reach--except for the legios of super-Jneers who apparently killy 8 atlasteams on their own, singlehandedly by shooting fire form their cockpits and PPC bolts out of their rear coolant ports.

well, that part of the song doesnt apply well when it comes to this game. Thats why I didnt post it :)

I do believe that is what the Americans call it.

Please do not let the enemy know my location. I dont really care if you are dead and want the match to end as soon as you die. I am alive and want to keep it that way.

The only thing I'll say on the topic is that it depends. :)

How many are they ahead by? What is their composition? Are they running together in a pack or spread out? Can I outrun them and cap?

I will go hide if it's ridiculous odds. If it's close though, I'll fight it out.

Saw a teammate, red on most of his chassis, ran for a cap when I died in a Cat. There was two lights and an Atlas left on their team.

They came at him one by one, first one light, then the second light, finally the Atlas arrived. He managed to get a kill blow against each one as they came in. The Atlas lasted a few volleys, but it was wicked to watch. ^_^

On a more serious note why not give the option to EJECT? I'm sure it was available in at least some of the previous games and at the very least was in one of the intro sequences (the Atlas pilot who ejects after getting caught up in the madcat blast, MW3 I think?)

Of course this means there'd have to be some mechanisms in place to prevent abuse i.e. people don't just eject as soon as they join the match or soemthing...

You think suiciding is an issue now...
