The only real alternative is to try to RUN AWAY when losing and hope they go for the base rather than chase you. But most Mechs are too slow to even try this. Unless you're a Light; it's not really viable.

I have been near to the last one standing and been offered quarter and I have accepted.
If I'm already engaged and the battle becomes hopeless I fight to the last. I know I won't be able to withdraw without being killed anyways.
Since I usually run an Assault Brawler I have seen 3-4 of my "teammates" run ahead and get themselves killed before I can get anywhere near and had the last four split on two sides of the map. In those instances I find a nice hill to hide behind and power down. I'm not one to throw myself on the sword for glory's sake alone.
I have also gotten into a fight, down by 3 or even 4 but a fair share of enemy mechs were heavily damaged which we were able to finish off quickly and go on to win.
So use good judgement but if the situation is hopeless disengage if you can and allow the base capture, it isn't the path to eternal glory but it is the mercenary way.

Many decent folks will honor a valid surrender. Hiding is safer especialyl versus PUGs who are less likely to honor a surrender, but sometimes you can't hide. (slow mech, legged mech, etc.)

Simply because in a slow mech you arnt fast enough to run and hide.

Don't worry though, I'm sure a few people will listen to you because they think C-bills actually matter.

I watched a guy in a love cat destroy 6 enemies and come back from 7-1 one night. He almost won that match. This was before artemis, and before they toned down the LRMs, though, so his 2xLRM20+TAG was hitting like an orbital melta cannon. His last two kills were with a pair of medium lasers. It was pretty out of hand.

Me too, but some people are here to collect the most money and shinies. Some people are here to crank their K/D into the sky. Still others are here because their friends made them sign on. Some just like watching robots explode. There are many ways and reasons to play. If you're here to wage war, then how many guys who are on merc contracts would die for their employer just because? Also remember that war costs money. You don't ever have to surrender or powerdown yourself, or even offer terms to someone you've clearly beaten, but it is a valid endgame move.

Running away when down by 3 or more mechs isn't always the best choice because the condition of the enemy mechs aren't always known. Here's two cases I've experienced.
Case #1: The rest of my team is dead and 4 enemy mechs remain. I've got 1 LL and 1 ML left on the one torso/arm I have remaining. I like to go down hard, so I start looking for a target. Run into a pair of almost cored mechs, both of which become 1 shot kills. A third mech was in just as bad shape as me and I win out. The last one was a streak commando that runs out of ammo before finishing me off.... Our team wins. Hitting tab doesn't tell you the whole story in a fight...
Case #2: One friendly mech in decent shape left (not me), along with 3 enemy mechs. Friendly starts to run and hide. The team points out repeatedly that all 3 enemy mechs will explode if sneezed on, and are only being held together by bits of string. Friendly mech wants no part in it because there are 3 enemies... to the friendly it wouldnt matter if it were 3 unarmed, one legged hunchbacks because there were 3 of 'em.... Our team loses to cap because of cowardice. Again tab was a bad tool used to make a decision with.
Situational details should determine course of action, not a brief glimpse of the statistics screen. Along the same train of thought, if your team loses 3 terrible kamikaze pilots quickly would you surrender?

so why dont you take a stand , and fight to the death instead of wussing out and pretending you are being all strategical .
cause there is nothing in this game to be strategic about .survival does nothing to provide long term gain.
nor does it conserve resources or endows bonuses .
all cowardice does is provide another halfhearted shiv preventing their team from winning because they are only partially committed to the battle as long as they are winning .
if things go badly they go run and hide.
Cowardice is the Primary reason for team loss in Mech Warrior Online !!
