Agreed, if you were to do this you would most likely find that 3rd person games have more players.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean that the camera angle is dictating the popularity of the game. It could simply mean that there are more games out there that offer 3rd person views, or it could mean that there is one insanely popular game that's bumping up the numbers in favour of the 3rd person side (*cough cough* WoW *cough cough*).

So your comparison/idea/speculation here has no real meaning to it.

But we both like to speculate, so no harm done... as long as we all agree that it's not actually concrete evidence in support of 3rd person views in games.

Good we can find common ground and agree, that the worlds most played video games have an alternative to 1st person view.

"However, that doesn't necessarily mean that the camera angle is dictating the popularity of the game. If we take World of Warcraft out of the game list. The numbers more than likely are still staggering. The games are just as different as apples and oranges. Yet, they all have one common feature "different camera prespectives". If you're saying this is mearly a coincidence.... you're probably mistaken.

"So your comparison/idea/speculation here has no real meaning to it."

Really.....

Stop nit-picking and deal with what you get. Be satisfied you're playing a (modern) MechWarrior game.

Apparently millions of phantom players with the devs' home phone numbers, calling in their requests privately. ;)

While I've seen a thread suggesting several ideas to fix the 3rd person issue, and the one that was closest to a decent idea seemed to give Cbill and EXP penalties... it still doesn't take away from the fact that this would only affect those grinding for mechs and EXP; anyone not carring about cbill or exp couldn't care less about having their bonus taxed at the end of a match, especially if that meant they still won the game (or won the game thanks to having exploited 3rd person).

Which brings me to my solution:

Triggering 3rd person cam causes a % penalty to that mech's damage-dealing capabilities which lingers up to 10 seconds after going BACK in 1st person. Think twice before triggering it, and in battle, it negates its tactical effectiveness as you'd end up dealing as much damage as a Spider in your Atlas when you'd want to shoot that annoying Light/Medium waltzing around you ;p (ok, maybe not THAT bad, but you get the idea).

1st person view players will not be playing in servers with 3rd person view players - To paraphrase PGI in a recent NGNG podcast. Therefore, 1st person view preferring players will not have to gripe anymore and the 3rd person view preferring players get their console perspective of the game, hopefully with respawn.

so stop.

People who do not like something or things tend to be the most vocal. Those who are satisfied with things the way they are or are going to be, tend to be less vocal. As it is in my experience in life the complainers and whiners are the loudest!

I'll bet, 90% of 3-rd person view lovers are using "robot" or "Gundam" instead of "Mech" :P
Real MechWarrior will never wish to float over the Mech.

It was the same sort of nonsense gibberish you use in your claims about how great third-person will be, only aimed in the opposite direction. Welcome to how we feel when reading your posts. :P

The other night I was PUGing an assault on Frozen City. I ran through the tunnel, dropped down into the gully and quickly ran out behind some buildings. There was an enemy Stalker and a Dragon hiding between these buildings providing LRM support so I started hammering them in the backs with SRMs at close range (Catapult A1). First the Stalker and then the Dragon, who was oblivious to my strike on the Stalker beside him. A good chunk of the enemy force noticed me at this point and concentrated on me, I didn't last long. However, I got their backs turned to the rest of my team just over the ridge. We won.

3rd person view would have been a total game changer. It would not have allowed me to make my sneak attack. The Stalker would have 'seen' me behind him, the Dragon would have been able to 'see' the fireworks of my strikes on the Stalker. Assuming they didn't see me, on the peripheral, exiting the tunnel. These Mechwarriors would all have ninja senses.

If implemented anyway, the fix to seperate 3rd from 1st person players would be acceptable. However, I would be afraid of not gaining 'new' players to the more difficult 1st person play style later. There's no incentive

Now in all this discussion (+ personal attacks) the only reasonable argument to implement 3rd person play that I've read repeatedly is for the new players' benefit. They can't pilot and they need visual aides (there are already visual aides on the HUD). Okay sure I agree. But, I have to point out again, I'm afraid most new players will then prefer to stay playing in 3rd person (Mechwarrior easy mode).

I have an idea, because I would prefer that we were all playing the same game, let the new players have 3rd person. We already have an economy boost for new players to help get them into their own mech, why not give them the view advantage as well. Once their ecenomy boost is gone their camera view gets locked down to 1st person. If they can't learn to pilot in 25 matches there's no hope for them anyways.

hm...I wonder if it was smart to make this an MMO. I don't want 3rd person (although i want to see more of my mech, too). I don't want anything that makes it easier. The game has a learning curve which is good. the funny BT technology has limitations, those should be reflected in the game not countered by god-mode cam or stuff like that. remember the old days of silent hunter and other sims? yes, it was abstract and difficult, it was a simulation. take the sim out of MWO and you have another shooter with a little bit of Battletech fluff. I hate counterstrike and those ****headshot-u-twice-games, where you run at approximately 50km/h through maps you know by heart and tack off "noobs" in a row. It seems there are a lot of people out there that do like this stuff, i can only wonder why (maybe their small egos need a boost?). If MWO starts going this road, our ways will seperate. I guess CS/Xbox gen will not miss me...

one idea (though not canon): make it a drone. make it expensive, make it fragile, make it slow flying and limit range drastically. it should be good for making a nice photo of your mech, but nothing more, exploiting it for combat should be very very hard (for example, player must control the drone himself, his mech standing still, not ready to return fire - if you switch controls without recalling the drone, it crashes)...u see, programming this is too much effort for the outcome.

I would hate to see the player base split into two factions (1st/3rd person). in my opinion there is already too much difference between PUG and premade games.
