How does it make sense to send keys to people like "that". If one guy has a key, and has signed an NDA, he CANNOT legally get the word out. Talking about the game on ANY podcast, I grant you, IS the way to get attention, not by claiming that you have a Beta key.

It is wrong, stating that you have a key after signing an NDA.

Live your life daily believing that you will not get a Beta key. IF you get one, then rejoice and keep it to yourself. Otherwise, get some sleep.

An MMO is different from a typical game. While a few 'big' names in Btech fandom might indeed have keys, they're likely part of the friends and family beta (particularly since they have a higher then average chance of being considered, ya know, a friend). When it comes to beta testing--no, it's random. Keep in mind 'beta' testing with the public is about more then bug-hunting. They're just as interested in seeing what a complete noob does in the game as they are someone who lives and breathes Mechwarrior. The weapons he favors, where he gets hung up, where he dies--those are all important metrics, at least as important as what a well-versed player might do, because it allows them to develop key infrastructure (hell, thought even goes into tooltips and loading screen tips) to help guide newer players along.

Besides, people right now who are in beta are under NDA. So giving them keys for promotional purposes is pretty pointless.

Very simple actually. I always got keys to games that I had no interest in.

It also depends what he said, Everyone in beta was aware of the game, just not the 'specifics'. If he just promoted the name to get people to visit the site, that should be ok. If he stated he had a beta key... well, not so much.

What does a company want for beta testers:

1) A mix of computers. To test on a wide variety of hardware. (Laptops, desktops, AMD, Intel, ATI, NVIDIA)
2) People who can express themselves well.
3) People who understand what beta means, and are not screaming fanboys (those that would break NDA)
4) People who are familiar with the lore (To catch possible errors)
5) People who are not familiar with the lore (To see if it makes sense to people do not know the background)
6) People who can dedicate time to testing (Woohooo! Free QA)

This is pure conjecture, but I'm pretty sure that the requirements are around these.

You will beta test when and if you are chosen till then do like the rest of us are doing. Checking are in boxes and finding something else to do with our selves.

The last thing I want to see the forum turn into is a Mad house. lol

Point 2 - hmm, have you read some of the forum postings? I think that maybe 60% could satisfy this requirement.

I submit Point 3 is VERY difficult to support, if the forum postings are any indication.

Point 4, maybe 40-50% do

Mittens has the key? Either he is incredibly lucky or he has a friend who got one and gave it to him, which devs have no way of telling one from another. No big issue here. What matters is that folks with keys are willing to play the game and able to comunicate their experience with the devs.

All he mentioned was that he played MW:O for a half an hour, but had plans to play it a lot more over the long weekend. However the fact he was talking about MW:O on an EVE podcast is good news for the devs here.

Edit: Please remember I am not complaining, just mentioning something I noticed and the thought I had after.

Before you cast too much condemnation make sure he didn't get PGI's approval for a media release. The NDA is at PGI's discretion so they can always give a Beta tester approval to talk about the game in an approved forum, in an approved way.

I see some people thinking that telling people you're in a Beta, and that using a very generalized platitude to describe would be breaking NDA. This is in most cases, untrue. Most NDAs for betas do state that it pertains only to specifics regarding the material, and the knowledge that you have access is freely distributable (Usually because in many cases there is no way to hide it, say if you're in a shared living space). This has been my experience with closed and invite only betas for many high profile games during the NDA enforced period.

Lmao...so a player who got "Respect" broke the NDA telling other people that he got a key...its more like F you all i got a beta key and i can break the NDA....

thats quite interesting to see from a player who got a lot of "Respect"......

if that is the case then please send keys to all the big game reviewing sites so they can tell u how awesome the game is...

Better option, finish of the close beta and make it open to all as NDA has been broken by a "Respected" player....

This is the case with most, however the NDA for MWO specifically says you cannot indicate you are participating. This has been clarified by staff over and over again.

Disclaimer: I am not complaining. This is just an observation.

I was listening to an EVE Online podcast, and I heard that Mittani, probably the most famous EVE player and CEO of the most powerful corp in EVE had a beta key. That got me thinking they are probably sending keys to people like this first. It makes sense. People who arnt neccessarly part of the press, but people listen to.

The fact that Mittani was even talking about MW:O on a EVE podcast is a massive plus for the devs of MW:O. Now an entire set of people that may have never heard of MW:O now have, and on top of that they heard someone with a lot of "respect" saying how awesome it is.

It would make a whole lot of sense for them to be sending out keys to people like this first. Get the word out, get people excited.

I personally dont think there is anything wrong with this, but I also think people should know in case you are just an average joe, hitting refresh on you mailbox ever 30 seconds.

Discuss.

I don't know this person and i've never heard of this person but i think its safe to assume they are not a complete and total *****.

Which you would be for saying you got into a closed beta that has a non-disclousure agreement since that would get you kicked out of the closed beta you were boasting about having a key for.

From the first pinned thread on the board.

Those invited into the Beta are under NDA. They are not permitted to disclose any information. So don't expect to see a bunch of I'm in the beta posts, pictures, or video.

Makes sense that they would hand out keys to people that are influential in communities where there might be potential players for this game. Those keys are probably separate from the batches sent out through this site though, I find it highly unlikely that they would manually check applicants names and look up who they are before deciding who gets the keys.

As for breaking NDA, it's of course possible that he got special permission to talk about the game, just like some games journalists may be allowed to say some things about the game.

This would allow people to game the system and figure out exactly what they are looking for, ultimately resulting in many people lying to get in, and PG not getting what they are looking for in testers.
