Great post Thomas, very informative, thank you.

Re: the X52 pro, can you explain what you mean by 'centre detent' please? It seems there is an issue there that could affect your aiming if I'm understanding that correctly?

Also, with that controller, do you know if you are able to use the throttle separately from the joystick i.e with the mouse?

Based on the one I handled, yeah. The buttons had a ton of slop, the trigger had a generous side to side slop, the pinky trigger just felt awful, and the whole thing just had a cheap feel to it.

Of course, this is based on my own perceptions. I compared what I was feeling to what I remember from the Cyborg 3D, and came to that conclusion.

[edit] Forgot to mention: The X52 Pro pretty much solved all those issues.

Just picked up a Saitek X52 on Friday. Just wanted to chime in to say that it appears to be working A-OK. Mind you, I have zero experience with HOTAS setups (hell, I just learned the acronym last week) but it seems to working nicely. After reading your review I checked for any sloppiness or slack and am happy to report that both the stick and throttle are working good and all the buttons are secured nicely in place (no apparent slack).

Kudos for the work you put into preparing this thread!

cheers,
Zan

A word of warning, stay the hell away from the Logitech G940, the quality of the components is poor, particularly the rotaries which don’t even have a detent so you can find the mid position without looking. The drivers do not allow you to map the mini stick to mouse control, to date no title supports the colour switching of the throttle buttons and they cannot be configured through their own drivers. Further Logitech has not updated the G940 drivers since March 2010. The damn thing is a pos, despite the fact they still sell it, it is so bad that Logitech dropped support for it 9 months after launch, disgusting for a product in this price range.

Quite literally I have spent several thousand pounds on Logitech hardware over the years, owning several wheels like the G27, the G25 before it, and the momo before that, their Z5500 digital thx speaker system and more. I was a Logitech fanboy, now I wouldn’t touch their **** with a barge pole, and take every opportunity to advise others to avoid them like the plague.

Thanks for your opinion on the G940. I have read alot of similar detailed findings that have steered me away from this setup.

I have read way too much negative about the G940.

Enough to leave me at the steps of Thursmaster with the wallet open to pull the trigger on the Warthog.

Actually I think I am going to be going with these 3 pcs of hardware: (planning to make the purchase on Fri 3 Aug)

Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog Joystick
Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudder Pedals
TrackIr 5 Premium Head Tracking for Gaming

Thats nearly $750 on sale.. So its a huge jump from my current X52 setup.. Please anyone with this setup let me know any reason not to jump in this direction.

I really want to enjoy MCO with a Joystick and I think this setup would be awesome!!

I am starting to really get into Flight Sims and the X52 is creaky and not very smooth. Love the throttle but not the Joystick. (too loose, creaky, and lacks smooth sensitivity)

Take Care...

I have an old Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2, which is about 12 years old. I dug it up out of storage and dusted it off thinking that there would be no way it would work with MWO.

Lol was I ever wrong, it's works perfectly. All I had to do was run the WIN7 calibration app in the device settings, reconfigure a few of the game control settings and away it went as good as it did when I stopped palying MWM 8 years ago. No need for fancy and expensive joysticks, just a good old fashioned reliable Microsoft Joystick, and only cost me about $20 second hand about 10 years ago.

Cheers and I hope you all enjoy playing MWO as much as I do.

Vulpes,

Will MWO tax the GPU about the same as Crysis, the game shown in the charts on your original post? If so I might have to find a better card than what I was looking at.

@kilgore; as they run the same game engine, yes the GPU usage should be similar.

Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2. Used this for all of the MW4 titles. Twisty, lots of buttons. I do not know about compatibility with Windows 7 or whether there is a Sidewinder software out there that will support it now.

Mixed reviews. Looks like YMMV situation. For $20 or so, it's been a great stick.

I also found an old serial Thrustmaster stick from the 80s that I'm dying to restore and convert to compare with current stuff. This is one of the sticks where Thrustmaster made their name.

On the Saitek controller the throttle appears to work in reverse, pushing forward sends the mech backwards. The rest of the joystick programming seems to work except for some commands like alpha strike or centering which won't take any input. Also we need to be able to increase the joystick sensitivity.

Thanks. I'll rethink my graphics budget.

For that matter, I may even need to rethink whether or not I need a second computer. (wife works from home 3 days a week in the evenings and I could never play on those days).

All the 990fx boards have recently dropped a little in price. For example the ASRock 990fx Extreme 4 on Newegg is ~ 145.00

Does anybody know if the throttle quadrant on the thrustmaster warthog can also be used as stand alone without the stick?

Those are sale prices, not list / MSRP.

Yes. Yes. Now just waiting for it to hit store shelves so I can post an update.

Though, I must say Nvidia fail on this one. Geforce GTX 650 is a 640 with GDDR5... i.e. complete and utter fail vs AMD card pricing... then we see another GK104 chip with the GTX 660ti and should kick *** at $250-350.

Pretty big leap in performance between something on par with a Radeon HD 6750-7750 to something on par with a Radeon HD 7950.
Nvidia, why only two chip architectures this year? lol

so seems things so far. if GK106 does surface however, that will be interesting to see.
