Edit: Fine, it originally meant "Pick-Up Game" meaning you just launched in without any pre set teammates and are playing with random people. It has grown to mean the random players themselves, who are generally poor players (not always) and uncoordinated (also not always the case).
It has further come to mean the bane of the existence of 4-man groups and the only cause ever of their losing matches.

remember, there will always be those that are so full of hubris that they take any difference and use it to define their superiority.
in the business world we call them marketers or salesmen

I personally pug almost exclusively, except of course when one of my real life friends are on, which is rare, this game is unforgiving. There is no shame in being a pug, none in even being bad so long as you attempt to do better.
As, a pug player, if you stick to the largest pack and attempt to remind people to stick together you will do pretty well.
Some random semi-pro pugging tips.
If you are dead and observing, help call targets in chat. The person you are watching is busy not dieing so telling your teamates where the baddies are especially with ecm can be helpful, grid coords and the target letter (in the red square when the mech is targeted) is most helpful, calling the mech thats almost dead (from fighting you or somone else you watched) can save lives.
another thing i like to do is when i see lrms flying at a team mate and i have ams, i run at the lrms, you would be suprised how many you can shoot down this way especially in a jenner.
Taking command helps but dont expect anyone to listen most the time best you can do is get the ones that will listen to follow the ones who wont.
Playing the sheep dog can be fun too but requires a light mech. I find if you run past then circle back in front of a group of straggles they will sometimes turn back and head to the group. not always but it helps.
Just a couple tips that work for me when im feeling like being a superpug, most the time just follow with the group and shoot what they are shooting.

Fun Fact: The line in the book on which the movie Forrest Gump (the origin of the box of chocolates quote for those of you living in a cave around 1994) was, "being an ***** is no box of chocolates." The movie line was changed to make it more heartwarming. =)

Then you are a PUG. Pugs are simply the people that drop without a group or that join jour group randomly. Its just a descriptive term and using it is not elitist. Everyone becomes a pug from time to time.
Only saying "Pugs are bad players!" would be elitist.

Not all pugs are noobs or crap at the game. I`ve been in pug groups that have done pretty well against premades and other times rolled over by them. But what I can`t stand is the premades who insult the pugs there stomping on through chat.

4-man teams please L2P 8-man and stop picking on PUGs like you are Mech Romney incarnate.
PUGs today will be your 4-man / 8-man lance mates tomorrow (or when they realize that they could learn better with a group).
I try to spend most of my time 8-man downtime as a PUG.
I <3 PUGs.

a team full of people think it either call of duty, or counter strike,
using absolute no teamwork at all,
not chatting nothing just dieing and going to the next game,
you sometimes get some people who lead and thats a good thing,
dont play pug if you wanne have fun it will make you smash you`r computer,
out of utter rage,
some people realy have no mind and idea wtf they are doing,
