Well, getting closer to the sweet spot, I oversaturated a little, to show the difference...

Vanilla with slight changes to filter:

with stronger modifications:

Using diagonal split screen: (upper left nearly untouched / lower right heavily saturated, more vibrance)

Posted Image

I use settings slightly less saturated, for more realism...

I gotta say, I do like the modifications. It definitely adds more contrast and pop to the mechs / environment!

Just like any other modern game it is brown and gritty with brown on top of brown. The dark and drab games of this era... sigh.

While these are not particularly good photos - they have some color and contrast to them.

The first has a wide shade of greens with some grays. It's very well saturated (the result of underexposure). Contrast is good though because of the underexposure the dark areas are a bit too dark. Off by about half of a stop is my guess.

The second shot is well exposed though it de-saturated a little and missing missing the finer details of the bushes. A low grade camera my guess? Regardless the colors are still there and varied. There are nice browns on the ground going to some greens in the leaves and a half decent sky. Contrast could be improved but it isn't terrible.

Now compare those to this:
Posted Image

It's white and gray. The only little bit of color there is a very desaturated green on the mech's camo. Contrast is ok but overall it's just bland and colorless. There seems to be some kind of white haze that is reducing contrast the further away from the camera.

Posted Image

This time we get brown. Again aside from the mech's camo (a very de-saturated blue-gray) everything is some shade of orange/brown. Because of the haze contrast is very low once you get a little further away from the camera.

Posted Image

Now we're in yellow/green land. Again the mech is the exception though the flat gray is not remarkable. Contrast is very low again.

The main reason why I dont immerse myself in MWO is because the colors are muted, muddy and unappealing. I can play around the beta-level mechanics and game play issues. I can deal with the fact that matchmaker is a work-in-progress and I can even deal with the fact that the community has no chat lobby so the real game (unit interaction) can start.

What keeps me from engaging mwo and making my wife a MWO widow is that the colors are grim and depressing (not in a cool way) and the filters are so damn heavy that I cant enjoy the detail.

So yes, gimme colors. Im fine with haze, fog, rain, snow, etc..but I really want to enjoy seeing this game.. so far no.
(and also add a lobby for everyone to join and start playing the fan experience and rp that happens outside the game)

Actually, the game doesn't look terribly much like it's "not real life" (except the film grain.) I would like to see a bit more color, but if you turn up the digital vibrance like someone on page 3-ish suggested, you get a much brighter visual effect. Still, I really do think the game is ok as-is - why not put in a suggestion thread for more color variation in future maps?

We're talking aesthetics not if mechs are real. Real life looks pretty amazing.

Oh, well then by all means, sinces mech's aren't real then the in-game environments must surely be real. Please continue to use real photos to prove your guys' point then about a fictional setting that's subject to an art direction.

(nothing personal about you Truepoindexter by the way, I'm just getting a kick out of this entire thread.)

Well I admit that I'm a little more passionate about this than other topics - I'm an avid photographer so it kinda irritates me seeing what is actually a beautiful game then run everything through what I've lovingly named the "sh$#$" filter. Even in the grittiest horror fest there should still be colors and contrasts.

There is no filters on Cicada screen, I think. What I can see there is a white haze.
On the real life screen obvious the trees looks better. The vegetation are real, not 3 kinds of trees like in MWO.

This image looks great for me:

That is one of the better shots of MWO and what I would like it to look like all the time. The trees I think the larger issue on Forest Colony - they're just brown/gray.

modificated: not a word.

Also, not a heavily modified photo. Have you ever taken pictures with a DSLR before? They *actually* look that good straight out of the camera. Your schyte iCrap camera might not have an acurate color rendition, but I assure you that tank photo is essentially unmodified, maybe auto white balanced.

Yes, I took pics with a DSLR camera before.
No. I dont have an ICrap.
And before you ask, I work editing images and that tank image is heavily editted that it screams.

Ok, I feel that I must point this out.

This game is pure science fiction, the battles are held on different planets with different atmospheric compositions.

We're talking aesthetics not realism. I want the game to look good. I don't care if it's realistic.
