Spoiler

Film Grain is most pronounced for me on Canyon Network. Doesn't stand out as much on dark maps.
EDIT: Actually River City is the worst.

Also, during the Closed Beta they lessened the Film Grain effect, making it smoother. So maybe you don't notice it.

If I was still using my 8 year old monitor, had it not died on me, this probably wouldn't bother me. My new monitor however has some fancy settings. Before the patch turning up the Sharpness on it made the game so much more clear, the detail of the Mechs was so well defined. Now I can't do that, since the monitor is now obviously trying to sharpen the Film Grain, which makes it look like static (like an old TV with a bad signal).

So...

Since we are no longer able to override the files in "CVarGroups_MWO" folder with basically blank ones. I assume that most graphical tweaks in the user.cfg will again be ignored in favor of the default settings. Doesn't that mean settings that are not included in those files (like cl_fov) would be the only ones that will work?

Thank you for this posting. I've been using the recommendations on user.cfg for months. (prior to sept 3 patch) Not anymore...

Please do share with us a possible fix if one is found for the user.cfg. At first it was a bummer to have reset dof and film grain. I'm over the graphics issues now...the FPS on the 7870 really went to **** after the sept 3 patch.

With the provided high end user.cfg and sweetfx I was getting mostly 50-40s with some dipping into 30s. Very similiar to what is stated in these posts...All game settings maxed, vsync enabled.

I just got done with frozen city match using thermal and entire match was in 20s dipping down to teens. And that's with aa off, vsync off, post process @ high, shadows @ med. It's acting like those settings didn't even improve the FPS from all maxed out + vsync. Strange.

Huh. A frustrated post....But It was working so smooth with the provided cfg.

Thanks!

Follow-up. Updated from Catalyst 12.2 to 12.4. Does seem to be performing better. Few game I've played FPS staying above 30 on dips. Max settings + vsync. Add more detail after played more.

I was getting really good frames with Pada's ultra high cfg prior to the last couple of patches, then everything went to "scrap"... Most notably when backing up into my own smoke game got so choppy it was virtually impossible to play

I am currently running with default cfg and these slider settings with very good results (55-65fps all the time) :

Effects: High
Object Detail: Very High
Particles: High
Post Processing: Low
Shading: High
Shadows: Low
Texturing: Very High
Environment: Very High
Anti-Aliasing : Post AA

1920x1080
Motion Blur: Off
V-Sync: Off

This is all on a Sager Laptop with i7-3630QM, Nvidia 675MX, 16GB RAM

Catalyst driver is up to 13.6 now for supported cards.

user.cfg is no longer working. Due to this and hacker attacks and negative trolls in general I have suspended the download package to the public on our website for the time being.

I will update you again in the future depending on community needs for the user.cfg and our ability to adjust any values.

FOV continues to work just fine in the user.cfg file.

I suggest you turn post-processing to low to help with the film grain and DoF blur for now.

Thanks for feedback. I'll keep an ear to the ground for further updates and try post processing @ low.

Had typo in previous post. Went from 13.2 to 13.4. Not 12...
I spoke too soon on the FPS with 13.4. It's still performing poor. There certainly seems to be a issue with frozen city using thermal. No other map (and thermal mode) is giving 20s FPS.

Odd you say there's a 13.6. Did the search yesterday on ati website and saw 13.4 (non beta). Anyway went to go check it out and they just released 13.9. I'll give FPS a test with this version now.

Never understood why game companies try to force "eye candy" on the users. Yeah, great that you can make single tree leaves drop physicly correct. And light bends due to gravity forces. But in a PvP game I want to be able to reasonably concentrate on the enemy. I realy would like to know how film grain static effects people with epilepsy. Because it effects me. Film grain and depth of field make the game just look worse. I realy would like to know who's idea it was, that the game would look better with them.
Stop playing consoles if you want to make games for PCs.
Always feel like my GPU is failing when MWO loads, all the classic signs of a overheated/broken GPU, but no it is the game and it is a feature.

Well 13.9 giving poor performance as well. Seems to be worst with vision modes. Both river city night and snowing frozen city just giving really low FPS. Dips into 20s. Even with Vsync off, Post processing @ low, shadows @ med, AA off. Given the 7870 a overclock with no improvement as well. Already tried repair tool. About to uninstall and re-install mwo. Sure wish the game would perform like it did in Aug. beta or earlier. Preferred it's graphics back then too.

So what exactly are the limitations ?
I mean how far can we tweak the CFG-file before we are tampering with it too much?

At this point it would seem like trying to tweak the CFG is giving little to no benefit.

The reason they put in film grain and the DOF is to hide the crappy fidelity.
For a game that use cryengine, that we all know can produce awsome graphics, MWO looks like {Scrap} when u disable both those features.

Im in a position to see more than the average user as i use a 42" screen, making everythign much easier to see, (ur not squinting to see somthing on a 27" or smaller screen). The downside ot havign such a large screen is Alaising become VERY obviose and so the use of AA is mroe important. MWO has no specific AA options and the DOF and Film grain are simply their to hide low quality issues with the image and thus increase performance for low spec rigs. Ok fine all good, BUT .. what about thoseo f us who specificaly spent lots of money on their rigs for high fidelity ? ..well so far PGi are ignoring that. They have even said that when DX11 is FINALY ready, there will be ittle to no visual imporvments, jus ta move from DX9 to DX11 and that any possible imporvments wil lcome later. As we all know, at the rate {Gi takes to 'fix' or impliment anything atm, we will likely die of old age before that happens.

Maybe Film Grain being disabled looked like {Scrap} on your 42 inch screen, but it looked 1000% better on my 24 inch monitor.

Well. Thus far in my testing a re-install has corrected the problem as far as a playable frame rate. Staying above 30 with dips on max settings + vsync. It still seems to be performing poorer than it did in Aug. but at least aiming is possible now on frozen city and river city night. Not exactly sure what got corrected in re-install. Just for fun I re-added the old user.cfg to see if it would affect performance. As far as I can tell the old user.cfg not changing performance. So it wasn't the culprit.

Well. I don't agree with you on film grains purpose for hiding the fidelity. Or that hiding the fidelity makes it better...But I do agree with you on the AA being important for large screens. I play on a 46" Samsung LED TV and pixels are much larger...

It's totally subjective. But I agree. On my 46" screen I very much preferred film grain disabled, Samsung TV game mode which enhances sharpness, along with sharpness given by sweetfx. Both TV sharpness and sweetfx sharpness turn the film grain into static. So I currently do not use them. So for time being...it's a dull "movie" ;)

Out of nowhere it's returned. Frozen city consistently jumping from 50-40 to 15-25 FPS. After many many rounds of frozen city stable in the 40-50s FPS. Have no idea...all I can speculate is some kind of memory issue with continued games without reboot. Played 6 hours or so. Don't believe hardware to be an issue. I'm gonna take a mwo break. Hopefully next patch can return the stable FPS I had in Aug.

Main post 1 update

05.10.2013 - UPDATE:

No package for now. There MAY be one again in the future.

For those of you who want to do some tweaking, you may try this user.cfg with attributes.xml all appropriate values set to 0 EXCEPT postAA (your choice) and set postprocessing to 1.

fov is your choice as well.

This may give you a massive boost in graphical fidelity on high end rigs.

Thank you. Tried it out and it does feel more crisp.

Never played with the attributes.xml These are the values you are referring to right? Once changed the sliders in game are displaying all low.

Spoiler

Interested in any updates you may come across on dof and film grain. Soon as grain is gone get the sweetfx running again.

Thanks
