Just give us that little animated 3rd-person version of our 'mechs in the bottom corner of our HUD like in games past. No environmental detail, just the orientation of the 'mech. Should help new people understand how their legs/torsos are oriented while simultaneously NOT ******* off everyone else. Bada bingo.

When playing a game like World of Tanks (the only other shooter-type game I play), it is easy to see that 3rd-person view is interesting, but also quite abusable. We are always using it to look over buildings and hills and around corners to see things that would simply be impossible in a battle setting.

I am often frustrated in game by what feels like my 'limited' cockpit view, but given the storyline and setup of the game, that is exactly what a mech pilot would experience.

The only way I can see integrating 3rd person view into the game would be by tieing it to equipment like the BAP or possibly a C3 command module (or both). That would add some interest to those options (currently the BAP is fairly useless) but might cause other issues.

I think you would have to limit the view range to 400 or 500m, have it either visual-only or perhaps use some modified wire-frame or schematic view (to simulate what the BAP would transmitting), and not allow target acquisition of mechs not visible to normal view.

Once you add in limits like that to keep it from being abused, the question is, is it worth the programming time? There's a lot of other things that they could likely spend that time on to greater effect and less community uproar.

Do you even read the posts? All they've said is they're not adding third person to the matches, but they are adding it to training grounds.

Here are the facts.
  • Yes we are currently working on a 3rd person option for MWO.

  • There is no ETA for when 3rd person will be available.

  • Players will never be forced to use or play against other players using 3rd person.
Why add 3rd person?
  • Reduces friction for non-MechWarrior players, non-core players, and expands the MWO market to a broader audience. It helps to make the game more accessible and less intimidating.
  • Offers up a different style of gameplay and tactics.
You will have the following options as a player:
  • Play against 1st and 3rd person players.
  • Play against 3rd person players only.
  • Play against 1st person players only.
  • Players can set their preference in the options menu, or during the launch phase before matchmaking.
General Information
  • We have not decided on the final implementation of what third person will look like yet.
  • We are very aware of the design and balancing challenges faced by adding a 3rd person option and will address these through exhaustive private and public testing before pushing any 3rd person features live.
  • It is possible 3rd person will be made available in other regions first. Typically 3rd person is more widely used outside of North America.
  • We understand players may be concerned about matchmaking and further segmenting the player base. So are we. Before going live with a 3rd person option, we plan to investigate and solve any potential issues further fragmentation may cause.
We would like to invite your constructive feedback on how you would like to see 3rd person executed.
  • Standard forum rules apply, please be kind, courteous, and clearly communicated your ideas or opinions.
  • This is not the place to say you dislike 3rd person.
When we get closer to launching 3rd person, expect an official Command Chair post detailing our planned 3rd person feature set.

Actually, as long as I can choose to not use 3rd person and to only drop against people who do not use 3rd person, I am OK with it. All these extra options are just going to make it take much longer to find a game, then all the new players who need the game to be more "easily accessible" will quit because it will take them 10 minutes to get into a game. I also hope that the option box is "easily accessible" for the 3rd person people, because it seems that learning how to use game controls is tough for them.

3rd Person View is bad because it gives an unfair situational awareness advantage not only to those who use it, but even among all those using it, those who hide their mech behind cover but can still see past or over the cover, have an advantage even over other 3rd Person View users. It's just a terrible camera mechanic for MechWarrior games because of that. Even though it lets you see your own mech and its camo, and that is nice, that doesn't excuse it. All 3rd Person View self-viewing needs should be handled within the mechlab by providing better camera controls and natural lighting for the mech models when viewing them in the mechlab. Then there's no legit need for 3rd Person View anywhere else in the game.

Also, if they add it "just to the Training Grounds", you can guarantee that's going to open the door to it eventually winding up in the actual game. And even if it didn't, once it's added to one area of the game, you can imagine someone will figure out a way to hack it into the rest.

Fatally wound... they did themselves in the moment they brought up 3rd person month's ago, and followed this through with the more recent bait and switch consumables... which only the VERY controversial 'coolant flush' made it into the patch because their still designing the rest.

It's a wide market money grab to try and lure all the CoD style players and casuals into the game, bleed them quickly before pushing them aside for more... follow this up with poor QA/Internal testing of what their patch changes have on the effect of the game, it's just been a slow spiral.

They are yet to address the new player experience, from the poor trial mechs, to the inability for new players to knowingly counter ECM mechanics ingame, to being put in groups based on elo where they are essentially cannon fodder... another nail for the coffin...

it is only a matter of time before its hacked into even the '1st person only' setting and the game as a whole. this is the start of the uncontrolled slide into total game failure.

they have gone and alienated too many of us with this caustic move.

They made it... they backed themselves into the corner saying we're implementing the 3rd person, like it or not, it is coming... then actually want us to suggest how to implement their idea which is being openly rejected...

To make this disappear we'll no doubt have battlemech #20 announced shortly... as well as initial clan details, you know to take our minds off the bad stuff and to the shinnies people have been waiting on...

wont matter at this point. the PR nightmare poo storm is in full swing and is too monumental to stop now, even if they gave all founders <as an example> a full 1 BILLION MC and 10x that in C-bills, plus all mechs, weapons, engines, mods, and so forth. No, they made a huge mistake.
