and this right here is the reason mechbays should've been free in the first place, when you start having lots of people with multiple accounts in a game, and admitting it on the forums, it will make new people wonder if the game really is worth it at all if nearly everyone has either tons of disposable income or lots of accounts (actually i have another account too, so i could go and do some messing around on that account)

good luck grinding for modules on multiple accounts...

How do you tell all the cbills you earned in total?

Nothing is free and hence I go by the logic, if you'd pay $10 to go see a two hour movie, $1 for a mech bay and the mech you'll be using for at least that much time is certainly worth it. A bargain even. And for the people with the argument that they are not paying for a beta product (netcode, ECM, etc.), have you spent more than two hours on this game?

(Wins + Losses) * Avg. C-Bills Accumulated per match

However, I just realized this is NOT 100% accurate, because it doesn't factor in all the matches I played where I paid out for repairs while R&R was in the game.

So I probably made a good deal less that 289,000,000.

TF2 and League of Legends are completely free, the only thing you have to pay for are appearance items / skins that have no effect on gameplay. Everything else can be unlocked by spending enough time on it. These games are MWO's competition. Just something to think about.

I'm not entirely sure that league of legends is a direct competitor to MWO... even games like Hawken and WoT are a bit of a stretch but closer to being competitors that LoL would be

If I want to play a stompy robots game, there aren't that many to choose from

Hero mechs should come with a bay: YES
F2P players able to unlock bays without money:NO
Hell, I have tons of MC and still the 4 basic bays and I still have 2 free, unless you feel like having all the mechs all the time you really don't need more than 4.

I agree.
A Heromech should come with a mechbay slot since they are sold for money.
F2P players able to unlock bays without money: NO
You want it? Buy it! Money is what keeps companies going.

So do not be a cheapskate.

Looking at it from another perspective: they're both PvP F2P games, and in my case I happen to play both. Which makes them direct competitors for my money, if nobody else's.

MechWarrior fans who will play MW:O just because it's MechWarrior are probably a very small pool compared to the average gamer who happens to be looking for a neat new online game that isn't an MMORPG.

I'm not talking about MechWarrior fans, I'm talking about FPS / sim type game fans

LoL is so completely different in terms of gameplay that I would imagine that there are many more factors as to why you might spend money on one and not the other, I don't think that mechbays will be the deciding factor somehow
I find it pretty unlikely that someone will be sat thinking "I've mastered 2 mechs in MWO and I don't want to sell more to buy more, so I'm going to stop playing and go play LoL instead purely for that reason"
I think it's more likely that a person will enjoy playing MWO or LoL more because that is their tendency, and that money will go to the game that they enjoy more... if anything, if LoL can be played totally for free more easily, then it makes more sense to spend no money on LoL and put the money in to the game that you get more benefit from paying for :)

Boy a free to play game.....however do we get around paywalls?

They made one account right? They can make another.

In a free to play game you usually get around pay walls by playing far more often than those that pay to unlock those choices or conveniences. The more you play the more you add value for other players (including paying players) as someone to play with or against. No one wants to pay MC to play on dead servers.

Some F2P games unlock additional character slots (in our case, mechbays) once you reach level cap on existing characters, or reach some other similar milestone or unlock achievements with them, or you also can buy new slots outright. You have a CHOICE. The more player choice the better, in my book.

Creating new game accounts in MWO means creating new email accounts for each one AND redoing all your in-game buddy lists for each. Once you ARE able to pay, there is no way to merge your accounts, either. That sounds incredibly inconvenient to me.

I don't think Mechbays should be purchased for C-Bills at all as an alternative to MC. I am not advocating that at all. I've already sunk several hundreds of dollars in this game and that would devalue my current MC as it is.

Instead, I am advocating unlocks either through MXP (such as described my suggestion link above), through GXP, and/or, as mentioned by others, through the upcoming achievements system, or some other endgame (gamma play) mechanic.

Maybe its just me but I have 2 mastered, 1 elited light variant, 1 mastered, 2 elited medium variant, 4 mastered, 2 elited heavy variants, 2 mastered, 1 elited assault variant and I did those with 4 mechbays.

I don't understand why OP feels that not having the option to buy mech bays with C-Bills is such an issue. I appreciate that new players may be put off by the 4 mech bay constraint but if they've played long enough to buy 4 mechs with C-Bills, they really should have figured out by then how to deal with the limit in a way they are most comfortable with.

I looked at the game when I first started, identified the constraints if I didn't want to use real cash and planned my mech purchases accordingly. It may be a waste of C-Bills if I have to repurchase any of the mechs I've sold off but that's the cost of sticking with just 4 mech bays.

Isn't the substitution of real money for effort / time in-game essentially the cornerstone around which a F2P model is based?

Before someone argues that effort / time in-game will not allow a free player to own more than 4 mechs at the same time, I have to wonder how many people really need more than 4 mechs once they've settled down on a mech or class they are happy with.

I understand that PGI needs to make money. I realize that someone who has acquired four of their own well-equipped and upgraded battlemechs has probably gotten many hours of enjoyment out of MWO, and maybe therefore "should" pay for the entertainment.

However, I find it unfair that players can hit a F2P wall and be unable to progress without heavy compromise.

I feel that there needs to be a way to let F2P players explore all the elements of the game without forcing them to essentially backtrack in terms of Battlemechs.

I don't think a player should need to sell the one he has been using to try a new 'Mech. It's not that they can't make a choice, it's that that choice simply shouldn't have to be made, because it's not a sensible choice to impose on players.

Like I said, I don't expect PGI to give everything away for free to players. I would think that allowing slots to be purchased with C-Bills could be a mistake, but perhaps if a player is capable of getting a few extra slots from pilot rank ups or GXP, he would have a fair degree of wiggle room.

What I find hardest here is that the number of available 'Mechs to play has more than doubled, but F2P slots remain locked at 4. It takes three of the same 'Mech to even get a Chassis to Elite/Master, and having three variants of the same 'Mech and one other seems like a strong limit, leaving the player having only two different 'Mechs to play (3 variants of the same one, one variant of another) unless you count the abhorrent trial 'Mech loadouts with no pilot skills (Which are very, very gameplay-affecting).

Don't push away the players who want to play your game - empower them to earn the items they want, even if they have to grind for them. Otherwise they may not play at all. I think pushing away free players is a scary idea and obviously not what we want to do. It's a good thing that you keep XP even if you sell a chassis, but at the same time, it is a hefty c-bill loss if you decide you want to pick up that chassis again - one that is unfair to a player without a founder's bonus and premium account.

I just don't want to be losing players over this.

You got me to agree with M A L I C E on something...my head hurts trying to fathom the sheer audacity and derpness of your proposal

I have to agree, if you like the game enough to want more than four mechs, you owe it to the developer to contribute some money, bottom line.

The lack of more mech bays is a issue when you want to unlock elite perks for your mechs.
And since elite perks gives such a HUGE adventage over ones without, isnt buying mech bays like... P2W?

I got 14 mech bays......working on getting the whole 57 mech bays (till more mechs come.) Ultimately i want it all.

OP actually makes a good point on the perspective of how big you want MWO to be.

Many folks(kids) don't have credit cards, need like game cards to buy MCs. Same time game cards can give you some advertising.

If your broke you prob dont have internet or comp to cut it. People got the cash, just don't have a way to get the cash to PGI.

Then do what space poor people do, and master one mech sell the other variants.
Then master another mech sell the other variants you don't like ,now you have two mastered if you don't want to pay for more mech bays. Then sell all of them but one and use it to grind more money to master another mech you can do it, just takes forever have fun. these pay to win people are just looking for free hand outs I say cut off their hands.

And I agree that hero mechs should come with free mechbay. And it is one of reasons why I do not own any hero mech (they are all crappy anyway xcept Ilya...).
