i would agree, that the smoke should bee visible in night vision too, since smoke is nothing but heated particle which are hindering your sight. the smoke issue in the actual night vision is handled just fine i think.
not quite. I can stand in the smoke almost directly off a campfire and it is not hot...the only part of smoke that might be hot is directly by the fire itself. I likely feel that smoke is in fact not hot and that thermal vision should only pick up on the heat that the fire is directly putting off, it shouldn't see 90% of the smoke generated....
this video is a good representation....although uses different colors to correspond to heat, you get the point....see nearly right through the smoke and only see the fire. You could also look up thermal imaging camera in Wikipedia specifically under the "Usage" chapter and it explains how it can see through smoke.
On a side note, It would be fairly cool if along with the new thermal vision we got a toggle to run either white hot or black hot

I love the change, it will certainly change my game play and others as well. I liked to snipe to keep a mech honest so to speak but I liked to get in close too so my style worked well always in blue thermal mode. Now i'll adjust and it should make the combat more interesting...
Thanks for listening and realizing what the original, ultimate thermal mode was doing to the game... now, if one can actually hide in a forest, that will be something to see...or not see

Why does thermal lag me? There's no excuse for that.

People do not even look to make sure there is an ecm mech on the field they go strait to thermal. I can not stand ending up "back-seating" to a thermal vision team-mate when it is a daylight map.

There have been a number of comments in this thread which I believe can be condensed in to:
Thermal:
Pros - Good for seeing mechs at close range, ok for medium range
Cons - Doesn't work on hot maps. Poor for navigation as all the similar temperature terrain doesn't stand out. Poor for long range visual.
Night vision:
Pros - Good for night visibility and navigation.
Cons - Useless during day. Mechs don't stand out.
Normal:
Pros - Looks good. Good for day time navigation.
Cons - Camouflage. :-)
...Each of the modes have pros and cons, and will all get a mixture of use based on the best mode to the current situation rather than spending 110% of your time in thermal. :-) Yay.

Thermal vision would realistically see through that smoke (the same way firefighters use thermal vision in burning houses to see through the smoke). Nightvision would not be able to see through that, and actually would light up the smoke.

@the Devs -- as someone who has actually used both of these modes, you should listen to this suggestion

Gremlich, Smoke can radiate heat. Smoke does not necessarily reflect Light (Although it also wouldn't let you see right through it).
Also, before getting your tighty's in a bunch, you might wait until they actually have it implemented before criticizing it.

One thought. Get the Brightness and Contrast Sliders enabled. I have learned to use the Attributes.xml to make the game more viewable, but most players don't know how. MWO was always a dark smear on Forest Colony, some other maps. Distant mechs didn't look realistic, like they would in real life at 700 to 3000 meters. Too dark mostly.

To me, that's just solid proof you guys are looking out for the players. Thank you!

In any case, i'm highly dubious of any implementation in a game that doesn't "wow" me. At the end of the day it looks very low-fi. When I look at the screen with it on I think "this looks ugly, basic and not worthy of a 2013 game". Obviously this is an opinion and I have other vision modes to use.
The aim was to get people to use the normal vision more by limiting the use of the thermal to certain situations, and in that way it is effective but, for me, more because the thermal vision utility is now considerably lower than normal vision mode in most situations when the reverse should be the case.
With magnetometric mooted, it may be that this vision mode completes the functionality of the vision modes to allow you to cycle to a functional one at any point, but until that time I'd rather have the old thermal mode - even if they implemented the limited vision sight on it.

I have a small complaint about both though. Recently I've been playing a 5 LL Stalker and when I have either heat or night vision firing my lasers just about blinds me! In Night Vision it feels like having a flashlight shone into my face! It actually hurts my eyes. Thermal has a similar problem, but not as bad.
It's so bright that I find myself turning off either vision mode during combat at hoping hot armor splotches will show me the way.
Also I think both night and thermal should have their visible ranges increased by 100, maybe even 200. Nothing too high! Don't want anyone doing crazy maneuvers like pre patch, but right now they fall a little too short.

Snow would not glow white hot.
did you not even test it on a ice map?
