I think it comes down to the mechanics of the game.. Depending on what the devs have in store for us I see several scenarios, 2 of which could be these.
1) Game is dumbed down so "regular" folk can play without much hassel, has a similar simple gameplay as WoT, wow and the likes. Also, less "faction" wars, or guild wars. Missions will be easy, shoot this, get there and so on.
Mechs cannot be destroyed/crippled, but stay in hangar even after a severe battle which would have destroyed a mech.
Mechs cannot overheat --> core explosion.
Little to no penalties for killing teammates, or suiciding on enemy.
2) Game is complex, guild wars, faction wars are played over large scale maps, with objectives that are not simple. Perhaps smt. like escort this and this through enemy territory, with minimal to no losses, defend the outpost whilst downloading data for the sattelite that commands the shields of the nearby outpost, so the second lance can go in and take it out, and at the same time 3. lance is diverting enemy fire to them so the recon teams can take out the base, and so on. :-)
The learning curve should fun but hard(many aspects of gun control, arm control and so on.). Like many have said, building a mech is not all about guns and nothing else, its about fulfilling the role of said mech, and making sure you can survive when your out in the field with that role.
I belive mechs should have the option of being destroyed, or at least crippled to such a degree that one would never just go headone in a battle. Repairing said mech should be exponsive, and there should be the option that some weps on the mech are just utterly destroyed and cannot be salvaged. This part should prevent peolpe from just lemming'ing into a game and rush forward.
The core of a mech should be able to overheat and explode, under severe pressure. Causing critical/crippled damage on mech, or utterly destrooying it.
Make it so, as when a mech down it should not be able to take further dmg, preventing mischevios acts on said me.. and so on..
While these 2 possibilites are there, it doesn't mean that I think it will go this way, since there are many flaws in my suggestions, but it is an option!
With the fact that we are playing mechs (relative slow gameplay) could discourage people, it makes this game a bit more interesting compared to conventional FPS games because you dont have a fixed number of HP, but several devided on the entirety of the bady of the mech, making it harder to just hit and insta kill. I think it is one of the things I like in the combat of a mech. Even if you've lost an arm, smashed the shoulder and crippled a leg, you can still fight!
I think many people from many places will try this game, FPS gamers, and ever RPG/RTS gamers.
A few things that might help on the game would be a storyline going on. Such as the world is real and it moves forward in time(Eve online style), not static alone, adding events such as invasions on this planet and so on, where mechwarriors can help defend areas and so on. With regular events, it would add to the game a sense of life and reality. A very nice thing would be if there we're also battles in space, on planets that have little or no gravity pull. Maybe even on spacestations, where you must conquer it before the enemy does it!
But again.. I am waiting for the Devs to show us what they got, and I am very VERY excited to see whats in story for me and all of you in this game.
In devs we trust.!!
Edit: The headset idea is awesome
should be somewhat mandatory to have that in the game
