What you saw as the outline of the rock might not have been exactly the dimensions of the rock. At greater distances and depending on what you set your graphic levels to in the options, terrain will be more curvy or more jagged as it drops fidelity at farther distances esp. at the low graphic levels. Might it be that the rock extended out more where the catapult was? I've never noticed this making a big difference but I suppose it is possible. I do know that I've missed enemies at far distances and when I walked closer, it was because the terrain was there (like the crest of a hill).

I just checked in the training grounds, and the distance was between 200m and 250m. All my graphics setting are set to max. Like I said, *very* little of the mech was obscured, so even if there were some discrepancy with the terrain surface, I can't imagine it would have been enough to cause this. Even if it were, how could I maintain a target lock? We were exchanging successful laser fire just fine. I just couldn't get a missile lock. And that target box flicker...

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this. I supposed it could just be a bug in the terrain on that particular map.

I'm fully aware that this is a Fantasy Video Game...

Questions with answers in the same post belong in a FAQ.

Hello Everybody!

Today I do have a rather special Question. But first let me point out that this Question is no rant or simply trolling. I just can't get the Point and would like to know if there is an Answer.

Q: Why are there so many Things in this Game so outright unrealistic and nearly hilarious?

There are a few different explanations because you're asking a few different questions.

First and foremost, Battletch technology is primitive by many of today's standards because it's based on a game from 1984 and some of the tech advances you're basign this is didn't yet exist on the real battlefield. Other explanations include:
  • The Succession Wars come after a tech "dark age" where a LOT of technology has been lost due to HUNDREDS of years of warfare
  • The game is based on a table top which had it's own specific rules, things like engagement range of less than 1 kilometer (vs modern jets that can shoot targets they can't see) would be either boring or a strange scale on a tabletop
  • Rear view cameras are difficult to render as well as a balance issue- The devs wanted you to be able to sneak behind someone to promote them to be more aware of their surroundings
In short, some of these conciets are "because that is how battletech does it" (especially in regards to range or seemingly primiive technology) ansd others are simply "becuase it's a videogame" (in regards to render distance, gameplay balance & progression, or simply getting stuck on geometry)

If the target box is also flickering, this sounds like it was under ECM. Or it could still be lag, or the bug where for some reason one specific target doesn't want to lock correctly (whch is probably also lag)

They have. You still need to complete 25 matches to no longer be a "recruit" and thus get passed the spam filter.

Getting your first mech is easy, since your first 25 matches gives you a big fat bonus. See my sig for details on combining the cadet bonus with premium time to make your first mech even easier! Once the cadet bonus expires, you'll have normal earnings. You make more cbills by collecting a lot of assists per match. If you die early in a match you can watch players to learn some tricks, or you can quit and launch a new match right away to get into another match and get more c-bills. Stick with your team and shoot who they shoot to collect assists for each enemy you help destroy

You will have full forum access once you have played your first 25 matches. Go get 'em

Is there some kind of battle-log? For example containing all the written messages: Who killed whom, who disconnected when, who said what...

No, I don't have anyone I know that has a computer that can run this or will want or play this... Unless someone here wants to but you have your own profile to worry about. So, I'm just out of luck I guess...

I don't believe there is. Hopefully someone will prove me wrong.

If you don't play the game, then why would you want to follow the forums?

Why do my lance mates vanish and re-appear on my minimap? To replicate, at the start of the match (before ppl start taking damage and everyone gets distracted), pay attention to the 3 teal markers on your minimap. It won't take more than 2 or 3 matches to notice it. Or at least, it won't for me. Count the arrows, when you only see 2, double check your lance status indicator in the upper left to verify they haven't been Catnip'd.

It isn't LOS. I've had mech's I could see vanish. It doesn't appear to be mech size, as I've had both mediums and assaults vanish. I'm not sure what else it could be.

The minimap only covers a small area around you, so it's possible you could still see them visually but they weren't in range of the minimap.

Other than that, I can't think of anything. Now if you have someone on your minimap that is farther away than someone who isn't, then screenshot and send in a bug report.

You're experiencing an old bug. There's exactly one person on on every team (2 total), on every match that disappears from the minimap unless he or she is seen by another allied player. Sometimes they are in your lance. Sometimes they are in another lance. It's never been explained, but you can find similar things in many of my older videos if you watch the minimaps, and in older videos it is semi-frequently commented on. It takes someone looking at that player to make them reappear on the minimap, and they disappear if no one is looking at them.

And yes, I'm serious. You'll even hear an enemy detected blip when the ally is spotted by another ally.

While that happens every single match (keep your eyes open, it literally always happens), extremely rare is the bad side effect of it: Disappearing minimap ally occasionally cannot capture bases or sometimes (and this part is supposedly fixed as of early 2013) results in capturing for the enemy team.

For want of playing?
It is awkward for me to play for example (long story short: I have to haul my gaming tower to the other end of the building)
But I follow the forums to (if nothing else ;)) prep for when I can play, and get my MW fix.

I would volunteer... but it would probably be a week or two before I can even log in... and you probably do not want me performing a massacre on your K/D ratio. (mine is .5 something) ;)

Not out of range, unless there is a range limit other than "edge of the minimap".

Sounds like it's a bug.

Yup! this is it. OK. Thank you for the response.

Every now and then I get this as well - right at the start of the match, the allies around me will flicker on my radar like they were under hostile ECM type thing....
No idea what causes it - other than generally buggy nature of (almost any) games anymore.

Yep. That's exactly the same bug.

(Btw there is a secondary limit: 750 meters unless aided by BAP or Advanced Sensors. However your allies are not affected by this limit and enemies marked beyond 750 meters are marked by LoS of allies and transmitted to you. You will lose this extra enemy data if the ally is destroyed, powered off, or jammed by ECM. However aside from the bug you described, allies should never drop off the minimap.)

Should being the keyword here. ;)
Funnily enough even with all the many bugs in this game it is one of the least buggy games I have bought in about 8 years.
(personal-experience-wise anyways)
