I got a few questions bout the gauss rifle.

1. Do they still explode if you run out of ammo? I saw it commonly suggested that once out of ammo a gauss rifle should no longer be volatile.

2. Does the explosion damage different for the Light Gauss and Heavy Gauss weapons or is it the same as the regular Gauss Rifle?

1. yes, Gauss Rifles can still explode when out of ammo
2. not certain but I believe Light and heavy have diferant damage values

Nowhere. It was removed about half a year ago and replaced with the Skill Tree (Mechlab -> Skills)

The old module system was removed. All "modules" are now part of the skill tree. The pilot lab has become the skill tree.

Which ANH variants are the best? Is there the single best one?
Is the mech worth the C-bills at all?

As far as I know they (and any similar special chassis) cannot be sold.

This is correct. Most mechs can be sold, but not the specials that PGI gives you, such as loyalty mechs, NCIX Centurion, most mechs that have a letter in parentheses after the designation such as (P), (I), and some others.

I don't know if there's a truly better one. Ideally there wouldn't be, just what suits you better.

For me, that is the 1A. But this is mainly because another variant is almost all energy and I don't like that... and then there's another with a 6th ballistic slot but I haven't unlocked any skills for it yet.
My 1A uses: 3 HMGs. 3 ER ML. 2 RAC/5s. Craploads of armor.

The idea is to pepper enemies with the RAC/5s. Switch to ER MLs at medium range, in which the RAC/5s can still pepper.
If the enemy gets too close (or since I always advance when I get in close), then I let loose the 3 HMGs to supplement the 3 ER ML.

Since both the RACs and the ER ML are on the arms, I can attack any enemy I want anywhere I want, while my HMGs deal with a weakened heavier threat before me to finish it off.

It worth the cbill if you don't mind being slow as f.
I'd go for the ballistics variants. For example you can do 6 AC5 on the 2A or 4 AC10 on the1A. Double heavy gauss and lasers is also quite popular.

Sparingly.

Also I forgot I also had 2 SPL which supplement the 3 HMG to make that hefty close range punch.

I know it is not the most ideal build. But it works very well for this slow thing. Mechs tend to back off from RACs and standing toe to toe against a pair of RACs tends to obliterate just about anything, though the RACs tend to jam just short of making the kill. But by then they are peeled like onions and all that's left is to pepper their core with HMGs and SPLs.

Short opinion question: Is it worth spending skill points to speed tweak a 70 ton Warhammer?

I have 3 Warhammers and a Bushwacker and im considering bypassing the mobility tree and using those nodes elsewhere.

Quirked or not, the ghost heat they will endure is not worth it. You'd either have to chain fire them or pair fire them using a macro to provide strict control to their firing frequency as the ghost heat will practically obliterate you.

Perhaps two AC/10s and two UAC/5s might be a bit less of an issue? Two AC/10s and two LB10-x? Four LB-10X since they are not punished?

Depends on where you spend the rest, and if you have a big enough engine to make it worth it. The bigger the engine the bigger the gains... But there-in rests other issues. What weapons? What other skills are in play? What kind of engine? What playstyle?
