Why is the member of the Chinese inspired faction using a katana? Some where there's a mad Kuritan missing one of his swords. And a battletech artist who thinks all Asian culture is the same thing. Still pretty cool though.

Because, quite frankly, the Katana is much more refined on a technical level and much bette rlooking on an artistic level than the Chinese Gentleman's swords are.

I guess? I'm just going to chalk it up to white people in the mid 80's dealing with someone that came from somewhere in Asia and not really knowing or caring about the details ala Vincent Chin.

The following part of MWO's faction description is why I align myself with Liao:

Quote

A Capellan citizen sees it as his or her duty to serve the nation first and himself second; individual rights are therefore subordinate to the needs of the state. Regarded as repressive by most other Successor States and smaller political entities, this simple trait has allowed the Capellan nation to survive and prosper even after the Federated Commonwealth broke its back in the Fourth Succession War. As always, adversity merely strengthens the Capellan Confederation.

That description seems to be consistent with the original MW:

In the original Mechwarrior RPG and 80's sourcebooks, Liao actually didn't have the smallest military. Marik did. Liao military doctrine emphasized discipline, officers were expected to lead from the front and by example (unlike all other Houses except Kurita), and traditionally relied on heavy artillery support.

Liao's poor performance in the 4th Succession War had more to do with state mismanagement and upper echelon politicking, and their reliance on "Fire Brigade" defense, than with any lack of ability on the part of the average trooper.

We want to achieve a new and better order of society: in this new and better society there must be neither rich nor poor; all will have to work. Not a handful of rich people, but all the working people must enjoy the fruits of their common labour. Battlemechs and other improvements must serve to ease the work of all and not to enable a few to grow rich at the expense of billions and tens of billions of people. This new and better society is called squawk society. The teachings about this society are called squawkism.

The real emancipation of the Capellan people from age-long slavery would be impossible without the great, sincerely democratic enthusiasm which is rousing the working masses and making them capable of miracles, and which is evident from every sentence of The Mittani’s platform.

Ah, so you mean communistic democracy, then.

You can vote... there is only one political side on the list.

From the vulgar bourgeois standpoint the terms dictatorship and democracy are mutually exclusive. Failing to understand the theory of class struggle, and accustomed to seeing in the political arena the petty squabbling of the various bourgeois circles and coteries, the bourgeois conceives dictatorship to mean the annulment of all the liberties and guarantees of democracy, tyranny of every kind, and every sort of abuse of power in the personal interests of a dictator.

I think Liao could be a choice for those with symphati for a underdog fraction and/or the capellan background (sino-asiatik culture)
In most of the Battletech novels Liao are the bad guys. (maybe they will be the Orks of Battletech :) )

Laoi stands for active ideological struggle because it is the weapon for ensuring unity within the revolutionary organizations in the interest of our fight. Every Capellan and revolutionary should take up this weapon.
But other houses reject ideological struggle and stands for unprincipled peace, thus giving rise to a decadent, Philistine attitude and bringing about political degeneration in certain units and individuals in the Confederation and the revolutionary organizations.

The Word of Lowtax disdain to conceal their views and aims. They openly declare that their ends can be attained only by the forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions. Let the ruling classes tremble at a Mittanistic revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win.

You mean refined in how the Katana was designed to combat unarmored foes and doesn't actually do well against armor? I prefer the Chinese Jian myself(It can do everything a Katana does without being vulnerable to breaking during a fight) in aesthetics, but to each their own. Can I also call the shotgun as a civilized weapon for a more civilized age?
