Why exactly is the Timberwolf/mad cat so darn popular?

In MW4, my favorite heavy is Black Knight! Mad Cat maybe the most iconic throughout all of MechWarrior (and heck practically is the Black Knight however is completely direct fire focused (if you're smart enough to configure it that way...), which makes it very handy on Solaris VII! Black Knight is even WAY more versatile than Mad Cat/Timberwolf and its only an IS chasis! Supporting a full electronics suite (jump jets too)! It kinda "The Batman" of BattleMechs, since its so darn utilitarian... (please feel free to disagree, the bulk of my BattleTech experience comes from MechWarrior 4)
Do not take MW4 hardpoints for canon. You lost your argument the second you said a "Black Knight is even WAY more versatile than Mad Cat/Timberwolf and its only an IS chasis!" The Omni capabilities of the Black Knight in MW4 do not actually exist. Due to the hardpoints in MWO, practically the only thing a Black Knight will be able to mount will be laser weaponry, which hardly makes it versatile. Also, MW4 destroyed every sense of the word 'OmniMech', as the Timber Wolf was only given 4 onmi hardpoints, with the arms restricted to laser weaponry. Add in the fact that it was impossible to make official variants for the Timber Wolf (ever try to find a place to mount a Gauss Rifle?), and you can see just how broken MW4 was in the hardpoint layouts.
I understand that you only know MW4, but you have to forget what you learned there. I spent a lot of time in that game too, but knowing that it was not right. A tip for the future though: NEVER assume a BattleMech to be more versatile than an OmniMech. They are called Omnis for a reason.

"The Timber Wolf (MadCat to the Freebirth Inner Spherians) was known to the Clans as the pinnacle of Battlemech technology. Being heavily armored, armed and extremely mobile it was an effective war machine at all ranges. Its modular armament could rival that of any Inner Sphere assault 'Mech and could quickly be hot-swapped in the field to adapt to the environment or battle tactics. Not to say that other 'Mechs were not also at the top of the Clan charts. 'Mechs like the Dire Wolf and the Executioner were in their own class, easily carrying twice if not three times as much firepower as Inner Sphere assault 'Mechs. Yes, the Timber Wolf could reach out and smite freebirth scum with little effort. Though, when it ran out of LRM ammunition, its offensive firepower was reduced - albeit not significantly as with other designs."

It's also the 'iconic' mech of Mechwarrior 2, 3, even 4 to a point... but especially 2. Not to mention, it just looks awesome.

timberwolf was on the cover and in the jawdropping intro of mw2.
I so wish I could play that game, I only got to play a few odd missions on it as a kid and by the time I had enough money to buy it and a computer to run it on, it would refuse to run on modern specs. If anyone knows how to get this game going on a modern PC, please let me know.

I see people choosing it also because of that fact. Kickass Clan + kickass Mech = win win.
Even more so when you take Aidan Pryde's Variant into account, which basically rounded out the whole Mech.
There's nothing a Madcat can't do. You can clip the ears, it still has a big gun in each arm. You clip those as well, it has still torso weapons.
You can't just strip all its weapons and hope to win the fight either. No single Mech can survive an exchange like that.
And if it has JJs, then you can't play for position at all. You may try to run, but it's fast and agile.
What's not to like about it?

You need a DOS emulator, that'll allow you to play even the original MechWarrior on your current PC, for example http://www.dosbox.com

And unlike the stupid toy show (Transformers) and anime (namely, but not limited to, Gundam) mecha, it actually looks like a piece of military hardware. Compared to many of the Unseen and many 3025-era IS machines, this is still true: The Timber Wolf looks less ridiculous.

I remember seeing the BattleMaster in MW2 while playing as CJF and thinking that it looked stupid. I was very happy to destroy them.

The Tarantula, though, I thought was kinda cool.
