So, it's commendable to support the game when you get loads of ingame stuff for your money, but if you dish out over twice more than the others for practically nothing extra but a "I paid a lot"-sign, it's something to ridicule instead? >_>
Logically, I'd expect that to be even more commendable, that's basically donating money to fund the development of the game. The only reason I can see for any sort of negative feelings about this is if you're butthurt that something superficial is priced out of your reach. And isn't that just petty?
Goodwill. Whatever actions a company takes is based upon their standing with the company. For instance, take another free to play game (Christ I really don't want to mention star citizen because that's been beaten to death)...but let's take Valve for instance. Valve has a lot of goodwill with the community. So, that gives them a lot of leeway when releasing products/etc. Take a hated company, say EA. Every time EA releases a new game, no matter how good it may be, will get a lot of vitriol from players simply because they're EA, and because they don't have that goodwill from the community.
Now PGI has finally realized that they have lost a lot of the Community's good will. We see them trying to regain it through release of free content to players (aka the centurion and thunderbolt), which is good. Unfortunately, they've already established, through their pricing (and i don't care if YOU think this is fair or not...i'm talking about the average player) of the clan packages, a la carte purchases, and now gold mechs, that they are willing to sacrifice goodwill for more capital. All of these all represent a VERY POOR value to the average consumer, and that the pricing appeals DIRECTLY to fans of battletech.
We know that there are minimal production costs associated with these mechs (no materials cost, etc), and that once PGI has paid the coders/art people to develop these mechs, they're essentially done with costs. In light of this, and knowing both how passionate the fan base is, and how easy that makes exploiting them for additional profit is, PGI priced the clans in a way that would garner what they believed would be maximum profit. Unfortunately, there is so much more to profit than simple numbers. Goodwill cannot be directly measured, but it has such a huge effect on the health of the game. I used to support this game, and had PGI had more goodwill in my mind, I would have never voiced my opinion, given the abhorrent costs of both the clan packages, and a la carte.
tl;dr sure if saying that I'm 'butthurt' makes you feel better about yourself, by all means go ahead. I'm just letting you know why there's so much negativity and ridicule surrounding these packages, and the game in general.
