Well designed yes, but one really cannot deny CoD thrives off the braindead Zergrush Mentality lil lockwood is angry at us for not embracing.
After all, by this standard candy crush and flappy birds are the pinnacle of game design
I lot of older gamers who no longer have good reflexes tend to talk down to have like call of duty, but the reality is that it is an awesome game. The single player campaigns were amazingly well done. I mean, hell, I'll never forget playing COD2, climbing up the cliffs at point du hoc, getting to the top and fighting through an accurate representation of the {Godwin's Law} defenses set up there.
Likewise, COD4:MW is generally regarded as one of the best shooters ever, introducing a ton of new features not seen in earlier games.
Or TF2, which is widely regarded as one of the best team based shooters of all time.
On some level, if you don't appreciate such games, it generally means that you never really played them, or that you don't really like games that much, since they have extremely broad appeal.
And candy crush? Yeah dude, that game actually is a triumph of game design. It's not a shooter, but it is most certainly a masterfully designed game. It's pretty much the king of the hill in that genre. That's why a billion people play it.
