The worst part was, the whole time I was super nervous and thinking "man I could do this so much better in my Jenner or TDK or FS9 ... but I'm stuck with this HBK..."

Well, don't do it only counts for so much when half the thread is about Dire Wolves being left behind by teammates or being too slow turning to get their weapons on someone.

Don't be afraid to give a shout out to a lighter teammate if you need an escort. I usually try to find a dire wolf to hang with in my commando 2d and I usually come away with a pretty good match just chasing off enemy lights and firing on my partner's targets. I am always happy to help a friendly that asks too.

That said, Having gone spectator mode on one in my team during a... lesser match... Steering wheels. I swear. No torso, all legs, all weapons linked to the same group, firing at walls because RED LINES, and even then, hardly firing at all. Opponent sitting right in crosshairs, watch them slowly turn left before firing at the side of a building with everything, promptly going under and dying. Whales seem less than intelligent.

Whenever I buy a new mech, the very, very first thing I search for is "{insert my mech} sucks"

Sad Captain i be.
Don't worry, it is still whale season with two, three and even four per team at times. Kill three and one more just pops up. It is even more fun with a fast medium LRM boat. Circle them at 200 or 300 m and LRM'em. Even the 4 LRM 5 oxide was getting into the fun finding an isolated direwhale on alpine.

The golden rule with Dire Whales is not to get in front of it.

If I could add to that, if you see DWF-Prime (I) treat it as a veteran Dire Wolf, that has a good chance of being in or complete elite tree, a DWF-A/B/Prime with out the (I) is a little more on the dicey side, as it could be at any point between fresh and master.
Also remember some Timber Wolves will pack around a Dire Wolf too, as I have been known too in the TBR-D's, and they can ruin the day of most light mechs with quad SRM6 / SSRM 6 salvos.

I do not know how many times now I have use a direwhale as bait while providing over watch on them and waiting with LRMs. I have seen way too many direwolfs go down to lights or a pack of fast mediums (100+ kph) running under an ECM cover. They do need to be protected until they are pointed at the enemy team, then let'em loose.

highlander pilot complaining in chat about the damned n00b who legged him. end of match highlander under 100 dmg me over 200. not a kill but 20 tons keeping over 4 times that effectively out of the fight solo (and would have finished him- other leg was armorless when help arrived- i was lightly dinged up).

If not i know i have killed a Direfail with a light by eternally shooting him in the back. Blubbermech just couldn't turn and shoot me fast enough before i was out the way. I just cannot remember which of my lights it was, locust, commando or raven.
I know for a fact that i've killed a near fresh atlas with my death's knell by doing the same thing.

And sure, mad kat, why not? I hopped over a ridge on canyon yesterday and targeted a DW only to have him die in a hail of missile fire before I could even get in position for the backstab. It was pretty funny because his entire remaining team took something like 45 seconds to kill me after that while losing mechs to LRM fire the whole time.
