I double-legged one the other day in my out-of-ammo AC20 hunchback. I just had the MLs, but he turned so slow I was able to get one leg, then the other and somehow avoid all of his nastiness.

The worst part was, the whole time I was super nervous and thinking "man I could do this so much better in my Jenner or TDK or FS9 ... but I'm stuck with this HBK..."

This thread is somewhat depressing to me.... After I finish my Adders, I will be working on my Direwolves :/

Think of this thread as a learning opportunity. Take every scenario we listed here, and don't do it.

Well, don't do it only counts for so much when half the thread is about Dire Wolves being left behind by teammates or being too slow turning to get their weapons on someone.

Don't be afraid to give a shout out to a lighter teammate if you need an escort. I usually try to find a dire wolf to hang with in my commando 2d and I usually come away with a pretty good match just chasing off enemy lights and firing on my partner's targets. I am always happy to help a friendly that asks too. :)

I lost track. From the Whale that decided it could out maneuver my Jenner on Caustic, the one that tunnel visioned against my Locust and spent half the match casing me and losing the hit and run game on Crimson, to the one that was too busy sniping at my teams catapults that got its legs sawed off by the 1V on Alpine there's a decidedly terrible sea of them out there.

That said, Having gone spectator mode on one in my team during a... lesser match... Steering wheels. I swear. No torso, all legs, all weapons linked to the same group, firing at walls because RED LINES, and even then, hardly firing at all. Opponent sitting right in crosshairs, watch them slowly turn left before firing at the side of a building with everything, promptly going under and dying. Whales seem less than intelligent.

Might have been lag. That phenomenon is hardly unique to DW pilots. Hell, I've wound up walking straight into a wall and getting shot full of AC rounds on occasion since the desync issues started.

there are reasons whales are defended against poachers by environmentalists in mediums

Since ive posted this thread, ive cursed myself and killed no Whales.

Sad Captain i be.

Don't worry, it is still whale season with two, three and even four per team at times. Kill three and one more just pops up. It is even more fun with a fast medium LRM boat. Circle them at 200 or 300 m and LRM'em. Even the 4 LRM 5 oxide was getting into the fun finding an isolated direwhale on alpine.

Well, I think you could find a "this mech sucks" comment from any mech in the game as well as a counter argument that someone else likes the same mech. I'd rather try the mech and find out myself if I do well in it or not.

The golden rule with Dire Whales is not to get in front of it.

If I could add to that, if you see DWF-Prime (I) treat it as a veteran Dire Wolf, that has a good chance of being in or complete elite tree, a DWF-A/B/Prime with out the (I) is a little more on the dicey side, as it could be at any point between fresh and master.

Also remember some Timber Wolves will pack around a Dire Wolf too, as I have been known too in the TBR-D's, and they can ruin the day of most light mechs with quad SRM6 / SSRM 6 salvos.

Managed to take down a mint condition Dire Wolf with my Locust-3M on Alpine peaks. Got behind him and began to saw away at his rear center torso. He started walking backward and turning, but it didn't matter. Locusts are just too maneuverable. Don't know whether this is impressive (or sad?), but he had at least 5 teammates watching me do this and none of them decided it would be a good idea to kill the locust until the wolf fell. So I guess it shows that even if you aren't caught alone as a Dire Wolf you also have to have teammates willing watch your back.

I do not know how many times now I have use a direwhale as bait while providing over watch on them and waiting with LRMs. I have seen way too many direwolfs go down to lights or a pack of fast mediums (100+ kph) running under an ECM cover. They do need to be protected until they are pointed at the enemy team, then let'em loose.

had one a while ago- fresh highlander (i think) off by himself poptarting ppc/ac5 when little old me in my locust 1E (LPL/SL) ran across him. i then spent the next few minutes inside 90m of him dodging poorly aimed AC5 shots tearing apart his leg. finally blew the leg off when a jenner and jager came to help him (most of my side was dead at this point). i decided to run and died somewhere else shortly after- think the igot boom jagered as i tried to flee.

highlander pilot complaining in chat about the damned n00b who legged him. end of match highlander under 100 dmg me over 200. not a kill but 20 tons keeping over 4 times that effectively out of the fight solo (and would have finished him- other leg was armorless when help arrived- i was lightly dinged up).

Does a Locust with a Tag Laser and some friendly LRM boats count?

If not i know i have killed a Direfail with a light by eternally shooting him in the back. Blubbermech just couldn't turn and shoot me fast enough before i was out the way. I just cannot remember which of my lights it was, locust, commando or raven.

I know for a fact that i've killed a near fresh atlas with my death's knell by doing the same thing.

Well when in a light shooting something heavier than a medium in the back is the best way to go, since charging head-on at a heavy or assault is suicide. It also seems that most heavy and assault players don't stack more that 20 points of armor on the rear center torso, and they put even less on the sides. Some assault and heavy pilots might call it underhanded, I call it smart.

I love those rear STs. Got an LRM Warhawk yesterday because he wouldn't turn around and face me. Just kept lobbing LRMs while I drilled both his STs off.

And sure, mad kat, why not? I hopped over a ridge on canyon yesterday and targeted a DW only to have him die in a hail of missile fire before I could even get in position for the backstab. It was pretty funny because his entire remaining team took something like 45 seconds to kill me after that while losing mechs to LRM fire the whole time.
