The Sha Yu is my top pick for IS 40 tonner.

I'll admit it's not terribly interesting, but I like the aesthetic.

While it probably wouldn't be a bad pick, it's a 3063 mech and currently the clock is set to 3053. Granted, PGI cares all of jack about their actual "live game clock" . . . but just saying that it could be a limiting factor.

Otherwise, I agree that it has a nice aesthetic.

While both good mediums, they're not 40 tons. Specifically addressing the 40t bracket of FLG's specific concern, I agree the Chimera is an outright wretched choice in mechs (and personally hate that thing).

I'd much rather see the Clint, Hermes II, Sentinel, Vulcan, or Whitworth . . . without getting outside timeline or into omnimechs.

I'd give all of them a chance, and I like the Vulcan myself. The tall and thin design probably works well in MWO and it has many canon variants, although many would need additional hardpoints. Perhaps not a meta-beast but it can work, I think.

However the best 40t Mech is probably the Sha Yu:
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Sha_Yu
Geometry, hardpoints, engine cap are all fine; it has ECM (which I still think is an advantage, albeit not a great one anymore) and imo it looks very nice. Too bad it's Capellan... but other than that it's fine.

Dervish is iconic (sort of) but do we need 5 more Griffins?

I agree it is not a Mech that would be needed and there are clearly better choices. But for the sake of fairness I have to point out that this is kind of an unfair argument after the mostly useless MW:4-originals the IS got.

And it is not like the Dervish would be totally bad. The hardpoint distribution is pretty good, I'd say. It is not overly impressive either, but again: I think should be fair in our judgement.

Anyway, as far as 55t IS Mechs are concerned, we probably need a non-hero energy boat:

Mad Cat MkII is from 3061/3066, Uziel from 3063, Thanatos from 3061, Osiris from 3063 etc.
Not a problem... Posted Image

It looks like every Mech is fine as long as it is not from the Jihad or later.

-shrug- I've always liked the Enfield more than the Lynx...

How ever I really think, just for completion reasons, the Chameleon should be added first. Also it should be the default mech in the training program... as well as a starter mech for anyone.

FupDup, sorry to be so needy but could you provide the spreadsheet for the Phantom as well? I know there are some well armed variants, but your spreadsheets make the info so much easier to handle.

I actually had the Pouncer and Grendel made ahead of time, I only needed to update them a bit. The Phantom I didn't actually have started yet. Anyways, the gift keeps on giving:

If we're talking IS 50 tonners, then I agree with the Chameleon, it has some good laser + MG potential.
Then there's also the visually striking Huron Warrior, high mount Starslayer and visually odd Raijin

For IS 55 tonners, along with the Men Shen & Lynx, there's the oddball Cronus

Hey Fup, do you have charts for the Sha Yu and Chameleon?

They are battlemechs... so not likely? I say that as PGI often inflates hard points on battlemechs.

Nope, but I'll get around to making those a bit later.

However, note that making Battlemech spreadsheets is a bit more awkward because I have try to guess how PGI will inflate the hardpoints on the variants. I guess I'll make two hardpoint areas (stock HPs and suggested inflation) for Battlemechs.

Maybe, but I was thinking about what kind of 55t Mech would be useful for the IS at present. The 55t Mechs of the IS can handle missiles and ballistic weapons really well; they can boat one or the other, and they can combine them in many ways. Some can also add energy weapons. In this field the available Mechs fulfill all my wishes, especially the Bushwacker.

But I do miss a true 55t energy boat. The Sparky is nice but it is a hero (and has Griffin-hitboxes).
The Lynx would fill that gap.

There are other 55t Mechs, too, which would be useful: Lightray, Cronus, Lineholder, and of course the Men Shen if we ever get Omnis.

It is a little unknown and it looks a bit odd, but the configurations of the Cronus seem absolutely solid.
And I somehow like the lore: a budget Mech hand-build by a family business.

Considering the Clan light we just got, adding sharks will make things even more scary.

Okay, I got the Sha Yu spreadsheet finished.

Looks like I need to figure out a better format for Battlemechs. For the Chameleon I'm gonna try putting the inflated hardpoints in the same area as the stock ones, just with a parentheses (i.e. 2E (+1)). I think I also won't try to make up reinforcement variants next time.

Huge thanks for this. The Phantom could really fulfill quite a few roles despite not having a lot of pod space. You won't get anything massive in terms of alpha, but considering how much I love mechs like the locust and Ice-Ferret, I would really love the Phatom.

That said, I still think the Pouncer would provide broader appeal and utility, essentially doing what we hoped the Cougar would have done as an escort for larger clan mechs but still being able to dish out punishment if caught alone.

The hardpoint overlap is a problem, but as you say it can be solved by different quirks. The -6B is just begging for special SNPPC-quirks, other could get heat gen quirks etc.

For the non-canon variants, I suggest looking at the non-canon variant from MC2. It had an AC/10, a LL and a MPL, plus JJ. Besides adding much needed variety it also satisfies nostalgic fans of MC2 I guess.

The problem is perhaps the hero. I mean it could be a really good Mech even without changing the build; just give it STD-laser burn duration quirks and armour quirks reflecting the better armour. It would be a mighty fine Mech, just not different enough from the standard variants ...and possibly P2W.

Much tidier format this time around. Similar overlap problem as the Sha Yu.

That could be a problem, but it's nothing a few PGI variants couldn't solve. Plus, lets be honest with ourselves here, out of all the things PGI has done of the years, can we really be all that mad about them making variants for mechs with few/overly similar variants?

I don't want to redirect the conversation too drastically but I was looking at the Fafnir now and saw just how many ECM assault mechs IS has available. The clan could use a few options like that but the only examples I can think of are the Gargoyle Conal and the Timber Wolf Bounty Hunter (I know it's not an assault, but the IS has an ECM cataphract). The unfortunate issue here is that it would leave those mechs behind a paywall and would require PGI to offer some sort of comparable alternate for those chassis. Does anyone know of any other options to give the clans a comparable option?

With current tech limitations, our choices are:
Dire Whale C
Night Gyr H

Somewhat related is the Huntsman H, which amusingly enough mounts the ECM in its foot.

Options that require more tech:
Executioner I (requires Improved Heavy Lasers)
Nova Cat F (requires Improved JJs)
Nova Cat G (requires AP Gauss)
Cauldron Born X (requires ER Pulse, Clan RACs)
Highlander IIC 3 (requires HAGs)

An entirely new chassis with current tech and ECM would be the Blood Asp.
