I don't feel it's an elegant solution.
I'd replace Hardpoints with a Mass Point system, as I've mentioned before.
(Each weapon gets an Energe / Ballistic / Missile Mass Rating (in addition to its Tonnage and Slots), and that determines the Mass Rating of each component by its stock loadout.)

What about the "Keep it simple"? I find the simpler solution the more elegant...
2 sizes of hardpoints (large and small) would be easy to comprehend and would give enough diversity to the variants (while keeping them closer to the lore).

This would mean the Atlas D would have something along the lines of:
1 Small Energy
1 Large Ballistic (possibly 2, due to the HP inflation it has)
2 Small Energy
1 Large Missile, 1 Small Missile
1 Small Energy
The Mass System is simple and robust.
A simple equation determines Mass - Roundup((Slots+Tons)/4,0), and this is a straight forward metric for all weapons.
Then it's just Energy #, Ballistic # and Missile #.
So the Atlas with this system would be:
Energy M1
Ballistic M6
Energy M2
Missile M6
Energy M1
And that's just the Atlas.
Something with a larger variety of stock weapons, it becomes even more apparent, as rather than multiple different sized Hardpoints and weapons, it's a simple number rating for each.

It's simple: every mech should have a role.
The role of a JagerMech is to stay behind, sniping and laying fire support
And here I thought the JagerMech was put in to allow people to shoot down that annoying Aerospace Fighter that keeps laying down airstrikes.

As far as unique chassis go, no. Heavies and Mediums are tied for 20 chassis. For unique chassis:
Lights - 14
Mediums - 20 (fun fact, there's almost as many IS Medium chassis as there are light chassis total)
Heavies - 20
Assaults - 17
Now, for variants it becomes a very different landscape. Even though there's only 3 less chassis of lights vs. assaults, when you look at the variant counts our light-starved state becomes even more apparent (not counting -S- or -C- variants since they're not different from their standard counterparts in the sense of load outs):
Lights - 61
Medium - 108
Heavy - 92
Assault - 99
It's interesting to look at the fact that while we have less Assaults than Heavies or Mediums, each Assault comes with so many variants that we actually have more unique Assault variants then we do heavy variants, albeit not by much. However, lights are 31 variants behind the next closest variant count.
EDIT: Another fun fact that I forgot to mention . . . at our current rate of 6 variants per mech release (3 standard + 1 hero + 2 reinforcements = 6 variants per modern mech release) that'd be 5 light chassis that would need to be released just to catch up with the pack as is; and that's not including the other chassis (all non-lights) that haven't even been released yet but are announced..

I contacted Shimmering-Sword (http://shimmering-sw...deviantart.com/) and I requested a commission from him to which he agreed to do for me. This was of course for the Mad Cat Mk II! To which I present.....
(He has not posted this to DA yet however he will, this is in no way shape or form my work and all credit goes to him)

That's gorgeous. Maybe someday we'll get the MKII.

Hopefully that someday is Dec 3rd 2016.
Edit while it's great (I think the arms are a bit too low)

I was pointing out how he's hypocritical because I said this was his exact role as a light and he told me I was wrong. Yet here he's saying pretty much why lights are how they are.
Ah, Imperious attempting to justify keeping Lights in their current state. Cute. FYI, if Lights are only allowed to do the roles that YOU think they should be doing, then all Assaults are no longer permitted to move faster than a Direwolf and should be locked into the role of "Gunwall", because thats what Assaults are for. Oh wait.....

Ah, beat me to it.
So where is the cockpit on this thing any way?
On the top. My guess is the paneling for the nose is either supposed to be a groin window or paneling for cameras. Were the cockpit to be in the nose, it'd have to be the size of an atlas, or have a smaller set of viewports than any mech in the game. Locust would be considered spacious compared to that.
Either way, it looks nice. Shame it's not exactly viable in this game.
