I would prefer 1st person only, because the placement of the cokpit would really play it's role.

Its a fact that a Mad Dog behind a hill has much better visibility and thus cover than a Timberwolf in the same position.

And in IS wise ,for exsample, in 3rd person you see everything riding a Hunchback. In 1st person, by construction, your blind on your right side.

Maybe 1st person Hardcore mode and everyone could get what they want.

While I personally prefer the idea of 1st person views, from an immersion stand-point, sadly, a lot of the time I am unable to play using it, since I'm one of those sad individuals plagued by chronic motion sickness brought on by shaky/wobbly 1st person views, or hand-held camera footage.

I tend to prefer 3rd person more out of necessity than out of any sort of realism/immersion considerations, and while there are the odd 1st person perspectives that are well presented and smooth enough to play with, I certainly hope that there is the option for 3rd person at least, in-case the 1st person once again proves to do me wrong.

You should try reducing mouse sensitivity to a minimum. It'll make it more difficult to aim, but it will probably also help with motion sickness from first person view.

How about a proposed first person "cockpitless" view? IE: The camera is still in the cockpit, but the actual cockpit isn't rendered aside from displays. Granted, this could give a slight field of view advantage, but it is far less then that of a third person view, and no worse, immersion wise, then most of the sad excuses for cockpits in MW4.

I should note that this -is- a mech simulator. I should note that this is a simulator. This is a simulator. Simulator. Stressed enough? Good. Because this is a throwback to the way Mechwarrior used to be - far and above games likes MW4 and MechAssault. The key difference being MW2 and MW3 were far more like simulators then what came after.

Anyways, you should probably not be able to see a full 120 degrees of human vision out the front of the machine, and even if you did, that still isn't 180. You should be forced to look left/right to see things to the left or right. We do this naturally every day with our heads. Look left/right buttons are simply turning our necks to look. The problem with third person cameras is they grant the player not only an elevated angle on things (thus you see more then you should), but it also generates a wider field of view as well. That's no bueno for simulation immersion, let alone keeping everyone on the same page as far as advantages are concerned.

Well i rethought about it and i only want a 3rd person view either in my own mechlab or a mech simulator in my quarters if we get quarters for our avatars. The reason i want a third view is to see my own mech collection. In the past like i stated i have played thousands of battles in both modes FPV & 3rd and i would not trade the new cockpits if there better than MW3 cockpits for a 3rd person view in battle.but i do like the idea of probes that give you a limited 3rd view for say 1-3 min as they launch and fall to the ground approach.and i very much liked the Mechcommander2 mini map 3rd person views for a tactical reason.

I has idea!

Well the biggest problem people have is the fact that they can't tell if a gun is pointing at thin air or concrete building, due to bad spacial awareness. Solution to the problem for first person - mount cameras on/near the guns, that way you can cycle through camera views on one screen in the cockpit and check your blind spots, and eliminate any need and therfore unfair advantage to have third person entirely! Plus if a gun gets destroyed/badly damaged the corresponding camera can have an error/disabled screen, and a camera zoom can also go to a 'sniper' mode for the corresponding gun.

well if it was not in 1st person, it would not be a simulator. think about being in the mech and not out of it

First person, fine. I remember play Mechwarrior 3 that way. I learned 3rd for competive play on MW4. Sure first person, Just give us a drone to launch like in the preview.

Not that it should be up there for the whole game, Just enough so know you wont walk off a cliff or something.
Basic surroundings, and if you were to just pick up an enemy blip on your radar ;) .

I think first thing is frist, and that it doesn't matter which way the Dev team goes, they need to pick which view it is going to be, and make it that way for everyone. If they go 1st Person, everyone needs to play 1st person, if they go 3rd person everyone needs to play 3rd person, for Balance, it needs to be the same for everyone, if they want people to be able to switch veiws at will, then so be it, that might be the best way to cater to everyone.

That said, in MW 3 and 4... certain weapons had certain effects, physically for your mech that hurt you a TON more in 1st person than they did in 3rd person, which is why so many people played in 3rd person online against other players, becuase it was a tactical advantage, If they go hit with two gauss rifles, it took them little time to refind thier target and go back at attacking in 3rd person, while in 1st person you were rocked (like you would be for taking 15+ damage in a turn), and the game had a physical effect to repersent that, and back in the MW4 online heydays, people who lived and died by playing in 3rd person, did so only becase a lot of the in game effects to targeting, and realisiam effects were negated by the use of 3rd person as oppossed to 1st. 1st Person had some realistic effects assosciated with taking to much damage at once or certain weapons being used, so people started playing more in 3rd person to reduce those effects. Mechassult was all 3rd person so it was all fair, MW3 and 4 were not.

So it needs to be one way or the other, for everyone, and if they do make it so you can do both, if they have weapon effects in 1st person (example, your torso being knocked upwards 30 degrees when hit by a guass rifle, or smoke in your sights from those two LRM 20's that the catapult just hit you with, or fire in your feild of vision from a flame or inforno SRM 4), they need to devise a way to make certain that the players in 3rd person veiw suffer the same disadvantages, becuase in MW3 and 4, they didn't suffer the same disadvantages, which is why so many people played in 3rd person in multi player, to WIN.

If there is no way to make a fair balance between 1st and 3rd, then one needs to be removed, and if one had to be removed I'm going to guess it would be 3rd person, since all the books we so much like to quote and argue the lore on make it VERY celar which perspective a mechwarrior has, there is no floating camera flying behind Widowmaker or Yen-Lo-Wang, The pilot sitting in the chair sees what is in front of him or her based off of the feedback from their nerohemlet. I'm sure you can have a rear veiw cam however you can put up in a side box, and if you have "motion sickness", maybe the devs will put something in where there will me no rocking motion as you move, but if my mech gets rocked by damage and it takes me 3 seconds to get righted and my bearings back, you better not be able to attack in the same amount of time, just becuase settings are reduced for people "Motion sickness".

I lived and worked on a cruise ship for 3 years, if have "Motion Sickness" put two teaspoons or bitters over ice, and pour a 6 ounce can of ginger ale over it, it works great on the high seas at 30 knotts, you should be fine in your computer chair.

Modern combat vehicles are already eerily similar to video games , strykers have a "third person" camera on the periscope, not to mention all the remote gun cameras.

Only if the camra is close in and not floating 20 feet back from the mech itself. It should also be able to be shott off the mech forcing the person to view from inside the cockpit.

If you get motionsickness, I am very sorry. something like that is up to the developers to step up and try and figure out.

Nailed it.

My only thoughts on first-person view is that I'm glad they picked just one point-of-view to fully embrace.

Though I do like the first person aspect.. I'd like to be given the choice to also be outside the mech like in mechwarrior 4.. I just like having choices is all...

Though.. I am going to be obsessed with this game when it comes out no matter what choice they make

I am so vehemently against 3rd person that, on this issue, i feel like one of those BT purists arguing over whether a mech's speed exactly matches the TRO's ;)

I really felt that, in MW4, 3rd person was like cheating. Since it was in the game you couldn't call people using it cheaters. They just used what was given to them. But, if you've got your nose up against a wall with your view blocked but can simply hit a button and magically see around walls and hills...........well, that kinda defeats the purpose of putting the walls and hills there in the first place doesn't it? It really made the terrain in MW4 a joke and made "pop tarting" popular.

Bring back "satellite uplink ... established"! Preferrably in Betty's original voice. ;)

I tear it up in both modes but I'm glad they've taken a stance and gone 1st only. You'll still see the jumpslugs, but it'll be on more even terms as at that point it comes down to learning the maps instead of 3rd person view which is more of a theatre mode anyway.

WHAT!?!? Are you nuts..?

Then we wouldn't be able to see the Hula girls, or pictures from home taped to the inside of the cockpit.

That said, I think the game would lose something if you didn't have to deal with each Mechs cockpit style and view. Looking out an Atlas looks a lot different than a Hunchback or a Raven.

I feel people should be allow to chose really. I loved the first person but i do better in third person (Sometimes) so having the ability to switch makes me a happy camper.

I suppose if the 3rd person camera can properly occlude enemy assets when not in direct view then it can keep that fairness and let the choice be up to the players.

The majority of people posting in this thread appear to prefer first person view...but that's not everyone. If more people will play and enjoy this game with 3rd person view added then it SHOULD be included. There are countless ways to observe and spot mechs in this game over and around all obstacle and structures. (UAV, satellite scan, that magnetic imaging thing etc). With these kinds of tools fears of Ambushes and Jump Snipers are laughable. If that's not enough to let you sleep at night your being selfish. My laser cant bend around corners any more then yours can....

I think we can all agree battle mechs are fun to pilot and we love to play these games. We want it to be fun and competitive, so everyone has an equal chance to win. But some people love to also look at the mechs in all their glory. Smashing around in that custom paint job, that's why we spend all that time looking at and playing with colours and emblems....and MONEY if they have any hopes of selling players camo patterns or emblems.

I am sure there are several ways 3rd person could be included that does not affect overall game play. Maybe an idea like the one above. But lets say for some strange reason nothing can be done to limit the added view around corners and objects, then so be it. We can all use it, and that's fair enough for me.

Since its a sim, the only logical view would be first person. How can it be simulation of a mechwarrior if youre looking at the back of the mech.. That would be a Mech simulator, and id feel weird having a little guy riding around in my head.
