Clan needs to be on par with IS mech to mech.

If you don't care about Battletech, what attracts you to this game?
The biggest attraction for most is the history/storyline that enriches the background...
(Not trying to argue, just can't imagine that players that are attracted to the MW series actually care nothing for the setting.)
I first played Mechwarrior 3 when I was like 14.. and then dominated Mechwarrior 4 and Mercs. It was a game I was good at and like the tactics, teamwork and skill it took to be good. I met a lot of good players/people.
That's why I want to play again. Mainly for the chance to play with my old wings again.

But also, I'm bored. Slow day at my office. Fun to flush out the potential. Course, some people get worked up. Not me though! WEEEEEEEeeeeeeee!

Yup, they realize that the casual gamer will make them money but what will really determine if they float or sink is if they manage to make a battletech/mechwarrior game, not just a modern mech title.

Hey clans come out " ", all the stuff you've unlocked, bought, and earned in IS is now worthless or second rate because the better faction with better everything is out. So stick to the inner sphere and keep what you've earned or switch and play the stomp on everything by design factions.

Because balance involves equal chance for both sides, minimizing RPG qualities like grinding for better gear. If I play 10000 hours, okay I might get some mech XP unlock bonuses which are minimal, 4% faster turning etc, but giving me a whole new class of mech (clan tech) that is just better by magnitudes over IS? That's the definition of imbalance. The Clans are the like, clear cut canon overpowered faction. Translating that to a video game, no matter what out of game drawbacks or grind or payments you attach, you still end up with an overpowered faction.
The problem is only solved by making IS mechs on par wtih clan mechs in power.
Listen I don't mind switching an alt to clan if they are overpowered, but I'd just rather not.
Then I suggest you avoid the clans and stick to fighting IS mechs if you don't like the challenge.
There are some of us who do - especially when it's possible to not only limit clan mech purchases to clan units (or make them substantially cheaper for those units), but also then to limit the number of clan unit members allowed into the same side vs a larger number of IS mechs. It would THEN be to their own advantage to use the duelling rules of the clans to avoid a massed brawl, which the outnumbered clanners would lose.

Cool, fair enough - I would strongly suggest checking out some of the stories though - you'll get much more of an insight into what you're using/fighting against. The clan stuff is especially interesting. Could be a good pick-up if you have a long journey or have to spend time waiting.

Battle Value
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Battle_Value
There's this wonderful invention that's roughly as old as BT itself that helps to balance teams based on the equipment they field rather than say weight or even cost (not that weight and cost aren't balancing agents, they can be, but generally they are more easily exploited).
Lets say for an example you're going up against a Star of Mad Cat (Timber Wolf) Primes, each at BV 2737. Do the math that works out to be 13685 BV, meaning you can take as many mechs as is necessary to equal that without going significantly over. Meaning you can get roughly 7 Atlas AS7-D's (BV 1897) and a Commando COM-2D (BV 541) against thier 5 Mad Cats. You out weigh them by 3050 Tons roughly double their combined weight, and outnumber them 8 to 5, effectively forming 2 Lances against a Star, while those 8 mechs only cost you about 77 million C-bills, while those 5 mechs cost the Clanners over 121 million C-bills.
If you don't think you can win against 5 Mad Cats with 7-8 some odd Atlases, you should really consider playing another game.
(The above is based on BT the TT.)

Hopefully the Devs will impliment some kind of team balancing mechanic like BV before the clans arrive. Regardless, we have a year to wait before the clans arrive, and most of us aren't even in game yet, so don't worry about something that hasn't come.

Agreed. Sure, the guys who've never care a spit about the BT universe got dough, and want to shoot giant robot laZ0rZ at other giant robots. Heck, I want to shoot laZoRz too. AT robots even! Who Wouldn't!
But, involving the lore and enrichmening the universe helps retention. Plus us lore wh***s got dough too.
Shucks, just look at Star Trek Online. That MMO has horrific glaring issues in gameplay but, still has it's paying following.
I think they're doing it smart. The table top rules have been through the paces quite a bit. Translating them to a MW title is the interesting part. I like what I've seen.

I'm going to guess the number of matches where people adhere to zellbrigen is somewhere in the 0.001% range.

I use to read them, no offense, back when I was 14, 15 or 16.. I'm 29 now and they are long gone from my memory.

I'm glad I'm not alone in my thoughts here. I don't know why I responded to this thread honestly... There's no way the dev's would care about the game and cannon so much to just throw it away making the clans exactly the same as IS.

Fair enough - I'm cursed with a long memory for useless junk that I don't want to remember. Anything useful and... forget it.
And no offense taken...
(And I'm 39 and still read them from time to time)

False, I roleplay quite well in nearly every time period, playing characters in the Clans, DC, LA, FC, FS, the Star League, a non-canon merc unit, TC, and ComStar. I am just as capable playing with SW (or even AoW) tech as I am with experimental post-Jihad Clantech. I am not the best, but when the dice gods permit, I am fairly proficient at the TT game. And while I don't know everything about the BT universe (I got into it after the release of TW, and college is my main focus in life atm), I am still quite knowledgeable, and even when I come across something I don't know, I know where to go to find it out. Do the Clans tend to attract the kind of people you mentioned? Absolutely, nobody is arguing that. However, it is quite untrue that the Clans ONLY attract that low calibre of player, and I respectfully consider that to be irrational slander based off of a generalization.
