For me though, the game needs to survive the test of time in the long run. Unless PGI were to develop dedicated servers (which would require reversing the code they piled onto the game) at the end of the game's life time, then everything is gone and kaputt. It is still possible to play MW2 Multiplayer via NetMech, and that is amazing because it is preserved for gaming history hopefully for decades to come. It is still possible to play MW4 via GameRanger. None of that would be possible if dedicated server multiplayer support wasn't a thing back then. I still play those games too. Matchmaking games and f2p have introduced the concept of always early access games, the total annihilation of modding (pay for skins now), etc. That doesn't sit right with me.

I might just go back to playing MechWarrior4 on Game ranger again Im sure some of the old guard like Cmeg and CYT are still over there.
????????? still using the Mektek Mod?????????????
Its really too bad the devs wont let us help them with MWO development and when important topic or posts are made about MWO from so many dedicated fans they are ignored in favor of there small inner circle group of meta crony's.

With MWO, we're paying to rent mechs. When PGI decides to shut down the MWO servers, the game is over. And your vast mechbay with 200 mechs with custom camo, cockpit items, C-bill bonuses, and modules.... it's gone. You'll have nothing left to show for it, except your screenshots.
That's the stuff that bothers me, right now. I'm uncomfortable with sinking more money into an aging game without owning the rights to play anything at all. Without PGI keeping the game alive, I can't even look at my mechs in the mechbay.
I don't just want to rent the permission to play with PGI's mechs, for hundreds of dollars, untill they decide to pull the plug.
I'd like to own... something.
I wouldnt be to concerned, at some stage in the future if a decision was made about the future of the game then it would be an asset that has a resale value to a purchaser who would be interested in growing it further.

Same deal with property tax, you never really own your house either. Sucks.

That's posters, t-shirts, miniatures etc. all out of the question, due to license restrictions.
Boy I wish they could make miniatures, the 'Mech models is one thing PGI knocked out of the park IMO. I played lots of TT games over the years (40k, BB, Necromunda, D&D) and when I discovered MWO I thought "man how come I never played Battletech TT?!?!". Then I looked up some of the old models and realized why; they were lame as hell. If I could get the PGI versions of these 'Mechs as TT miniatures I'd bust out the paints again.

I've felt the sting with Hawken (Hey! Remember that game?)
I spent a decent amount of money on it and now I have nothing.
No update in what will soon be a year and Meteor has closed it's doors.
Forums are gone and now the servers can go offline any day.
The one thing MWO has over Hawken is that it has a strong legacy and a larger following with people who care more about it.
I very much doubt MWO will go the way of Hawken anytime soon, but I do worry PGI may lose interest at some point.
Those fears came to life when Transverse was announced and I was almost certain MWO was done and PGI was moving on to "Not Star Citizen", but once the crowdfunding failed and Bryan effectively vanished to go play with his space sim, those fears were laid to rest.
I'm sure MWO will be around for awhile and if I get another couple of years with this game I'll be happy, just as long as they keep trying to keep afloat.

I hope they make all the game content free to the public to host their own servers.

If you go to buy actual Tabletop models, you're looking at £5-10 per mech.
I recently bought a Locust (£5.50), Urbanmech (£5.50) and Mad Dog (£6.75 - but it was the old sculpt, the new one is £8.25)
Then I had to pay £6 postage on top (also got a Rulebook with it, I think it would have been £3 without).
I want to get a Cauldron Born, Centurion and Raven next. Possibly a Long Tom Artillery Truck too.
Those 4 models will run me £30.
If I go for the 4 pack that has a Raven, Centurion, Jagermech and Atlas, it'll be £38.50, but I'll have a second Jager and 4th Atlas for my trouble.
Yes, I'll get to keep these forever, but to send us a model of each mech we buy, would add US$10-15 +P&P to each package level.
(Which honestly, I would be perfectly OK with paying.)
As is, we have permission from PGI to use the MWO models to create 3D prints from (so long as we don't sell them).
This is precisely what I intend to do with many, (if not all) the beautiful models from MWO.
Print them on 32mm Hex Bases in 1:285 (6mm) scale, then my favourites (a couple of Locusts, probably some others) in larger scales.
Probably in 1:56 (28mm) scale. (making the locust stand around 160mm tall at this scale).
Looking forward to it.

Tobad my wife wouldn't let me do it....
If / when I make my work/play-pod down the line (aircon controlled 3-5 monitor, Wacom screen and haptic pen for CAD work, joysticks, pedals, closing doors, leather and adjustable everything, etc), it's going to be hand crafted from wood and steel.
Far faster and cheaper.

May not be their option to allow it considering the Battletech IP which I assume is licensed to them, for how long I don't know.
I enjoyed playing Warhammer Online and that game got shut down once their 5yr license deal ran out. There were some privately run servers for the game but they got shut down also due to legal action by GW, the IP owner.
