How Should Inner Sphere Omnimechs Be Balanced?

An easy one would be to just give them huge quirks, which I suppose is viable. Maybe being able to alter engine size and heat sinks while still having fixed structure/armor type/jets?
We don't really have to worry about them now, since most of them show up in the late 50's and 60's, though the Raptor came out in 3052 which is pretty close. Would make for a good platform to test the concept.

Maybe.
30 universal heat cap.
SHS at 0.20
DHS at 0.40
Plus quirks, might be a reasonable start.

Well, those won't be very good...it's almost like we've seen this before.

The IS has it worse by a long shot.
35 tonner and 40 tonner with hardwired SHS...
35 tonner with hardwired C3 Slave and TAG...
Double hardwired CASE with IS XL engines...
STD engine on a 40 tonner...
IS XL on large/slow assaults and heavies...
Often fewer stock weapons so fewer hardpoints...
No super Clan internal goodies to make up for any of the above...

The reverse should be true for Clan Battlemechs as well. FIxed hardpoints for each variant, but unlocked otherwise.
Any balance issues can be handled by quirks, hardpoint inflation (or lack there of), or other such alternatives to messing with the underlying construction rules.

most IS Omni-Mechs have IS XLs so the QQ if they are ,locked would be insane,
that said i think Unlocking Omni-Engines and allow:
engine ratings of +50 or -50 for Lights and Mediums,
and engine ratings of +25 or -25 for Heavies and Assaults,
would offer a good balance

Oh, I know. Just proving a point.
There may be a few gems...but I'd need to have a look. Hardwired CASE is an issue, because XL engine. Just like that Kintaro Champ.

But hey, at least the Avatar gets dual hardwired CT Medium Lasers...and double CASE + XL to offset it. :\

Neither the Raptor or the Sunder seem terrible; just not great. Have not look at hitboxes, but the Raptor is a slow Commando with 7 E hardpoints, or a more heavily armed, grounded Mist Lynx with 9.5 tons of pod space. Doesn't have Ferro, but does have Endo.
Sunder is a 90 tonner w/ a 360Xl, PeaceDove speed of 71ish(unless there is hex rounding). 35 tons of pod with 15 hardwired DHS, one on the right arm. Not terrible, capable of mounting AC20s, and Tri-SRM4s in the CT and head.
I kinda want that MRM-70 variant....
Downside is no Endo. Plus side is no Ferro.
Looking at the timeline, it will have to be a timeline jump to get IS Omni's, those two are '52 and '54, with most of the others coming in the late '50s and '60s.
And then there's the abomination that is the FS9-O, a 45 ton Omni that moves 107, two externally mounted DHS in each ST, 3 JJs in each ST, 2 Endo slots in one ST, which leaves a single slot in the LT open and three in the RT. Two hardwired flamers in the CT eat two tons.
That leaves it with 12.5 tons of pod space, and a rather sad selection of hardpoints.
One has a sword, so I guess it has that going for it.
