Here's a question -

How are they going to ensure that everyone is playing on a level field concerning system settings?

Just saying that concerning tournaments and people exploiting parts of the game's visual design to get into the finals of them is going to be an area of contention.

My hope would be that you need to run a launcher/client tailored for this tournament.. totally locked down except for things like keybinds and resolution etc

It was legal then, its legal now, unless the tournament really goes out of their way to contain that behavior, itll never not be legit.

You can hate if you want, but obviously people who do it wont care.

When you host on site tourneys you can control peoples machines, but outside of that, its incredibly tough to enforce someones graphic settings.

That said you dont really get the same advantage with ultra low settings in MWO that you would in other FPS games.

Different beast entirely.

You still have things like that DirectX texture software (I don't recall the name, there's several threads about it) that can alter things like laser/explosive glow among other things that I'm sure people exploiting haven't been terribly willing to divulge.

Just for the sake of opening up the argument on it so the people that actually want to enter and play it can have some sense of a fair field of play.

Well unless you have an entire team do it, its not going to make a heck of alot of difference. Most players in Quake 3 that played at the professional level didnt drop graphics down to nothing, just turned off things that made it easier on them.

I cant be the only person that has my particles set to low to avoid the FPS hit from being lit up or overheating.

In a 12 on 12 game its unlikely that 2 or 3 people turning their graphics down gives them an unfair advantage that would mean a more skilled team lost to a less skilled team.

Thats the equivalent of a few people have exceptionally good mouse and keyboard set ups for gaming, along with mouse scripts for TAG, perfect chain fire, and mouse acceleration.

At least from the "claims" of many higher tiered players, many of them and their units run on low specs to minimize things like smoke and particle effects. It might not be a huge advantage, but it could be something that adds up quite a bit if its 12v6 or 8v3 going out of their way to exploit graphical settings (or 3rd party texture/effect control).

If the skill levels are roughly equal - small exploits like this can be what gives one team the edge over the other.

Yeah everyone should be running low spec smoke and particles. Theyre screwed up. Its not our fault, its PGIs.

Theres a problem with their sprites and ATI cards. Problem with particles and Nvidia cards.

Its definitely an advantage to not lose 30FPS when overheating smoke starts to emanate from your cockpit, and you back up. Nor should I be blinded by AC2s because PGI cant make a translucent sprite.

And theyre not exploits.

Youre basically saying, well this Basketball team and this Basketball team are evenly matched, but this team all went out and bought really nice sneakers.

If thats the edge that puts them over the top, well, the other team should buy some better damned sneakers, because thats a horrible reason to lose.

I paid alot of money to have a mouse that I can program to keep a button held down. Not that I use TAG, but if it wasnt useless, id be using my mouse to keep the beam on all the time. Why on earth WOULDNT you do that? I have a 47 inch monitor, do we want to cut that down to 30 because its not fair?

Theres a difference between exploits, and fine tuning.

Now if you make a SweetFX profile that makes terrain textures solid block colors, yeah thats probably an exploit.

Obviously if you did a number of third party things, those are exploits.

But even the CPL on site tourneys let you program a mouse the way you want. Its 2015. If MWO doesnt let you properly mess with X and Y mouse accel and sensitivity, (you can in the cfg file) why wouldnt you use your mouses software control panel to fine tune it?

Just as a sidenote, I have my own startup company and am considering sponsoring a team for this. As we find out more details I'll be able to give a more firm decision obviously, but there are those of us in the community who have the resources to do things like that. It's a thing to consider.

Solaris has always been a part of the universe. That's all this is.

CW Phase 3 looks promising for those of us into the war side of the universe, though.

It's looking very much like a MWO version of WvW from Guild Wars 2, and that's a damn good thing. I quite enjoy the idea of player controlled upgrades and resources / choice of planetary attack.

Doing that is not an exploit by any means, but should those teams get comfortable doing that they will be at a huge disadvantage during the final matchup when they cannot dumb that down if the match refs won't allow it.

I think it will be funny watching all the try hard, config editing, elitists get owned because they can't edit the config or bring their own mouse and keyboards to the world tournament.

Im sure a lot of competitive players will be interested in a championship where both teams just boat LL/LPL/MPL in the same 3 mechs.

Couldn't agree more.

Before we have sth like a "MWO world championship" we need a Solaris-mode with 1vs1, 2vs2, 4vs4 and sth like a persistent ladder/leaderboard in the "ordinary" MWO. From there you can build up. But pls not with 100.000$ prize money, as i do not buy every MechPack available to finance the few comp players involved in this but to help make this game getting better.

Rather see them spend the time and resources creating more depth in gameplay.

Without the rationale and motivation behind the decision, it's difficult to be specific. It was like: MW:O World Championship. $100K in prizes. Russ drops the mic. Then I was like: "Dafuq? How do you think this is a good idea? What's the point of it? Pick that mic back up and explain something!". Then I remembered he couldn't hear me through my computer screen...

I'm not sure why they are doing it other than "someone" wants it to happen. If it is to attract new players is the target audience similar enough to the core customer that they will stay after payouts? Even if the prize pool were $10 million and every pro gamer in the world wanted in (and all their... I'll call them followers) how many would be a paying customer a year later?

If it's targeted for current players more than drawing in new players: I'm sure the handful of comp teams will appreciate cash for doing what they were doing anyway. PGI keeps forgetting most players are casuals; many are so casual they won't even play CW or try to work with a team.

But again I need more information so I can form an opinion other than: No thanks, less Esport, more depth.

Pretty much my thoughts on it.

But there really is no explaining to Russ what his actual audience is, our island is overcrowded.

I guess I just don't see him coming to his senses and putting that money into making the game more attractive to the players we have and have lost because of the lack of investment into game development - so I guess just throwing out some argument so that the event doesn't work out to be a complete failure.

Great idea, diverting funds that COULD be being used to fix the many issues with the game, or for further development into a cash prize so that the best person who can hide their aimbot the best gets it instead

Russ REALLY needs to just get the **** out. Seriously. His E-sport ambition will kill the game

The other thing that I'm curious about - is there even enough "comp" teams to make a 100k seeded tourney any sort of value for the company?

If its only actually ~32 total teams does it really make sense? I can only come up with a handful that I've ever seen in matches. 5-10, I'm sure there's more than that, but is there actually enough more than that?

The comp teams would split and enter multiple teams I am sure. Why shouldn't they? People would fill out rosters to join this I wouldn't worry about how many teams there are. There are only two units that would really have a shot at winning though.
