Not putting an XL in a Locust seems like an iffy decision...

Anyway, anyone have a simple word or two for my brother on the PPC Medium Sniper he wants?

Meanwhile, I'll still be internally debating Locusts or Jenners...

Depends.
If it isn't required, it's fine. (STD 190 + small pulses and 10 DHS with full armor? No need for an XL)
But short of small lasers or a single large laser, it isn't possible to get a full engine without going XL.

-------
Shadowhawk K variant.
Griffin; Any.
Phoenix Hawk Just looks ******* awesome.
Hunchback 4P. Demonstration. (Starts with building it.)
Centurion AL.
Any Crab.
Edit: Blackjack BJ-3. BJ-2 if available (was a loyalty variant so there's often a delay).
Edit: Vindicators. There isn't a lot of love out there for them, but since hitbox fixes they are pretty good (compared to day one where everything was a CT hit).
Cicada.

If you two plan on rolling together, definitely go Cicada. 3C lets your friend run a single PPC or ER PPC and it can be backed up with lots of MGs to fight in a playstyle similar to this one (using hero Cicada and missiles instead of MGs).

Rather than peppering with LRMs, what your friend would do is once the enemy is weakened he can rush up and spray 'em with MGs.

Oh, and Huntsman.

Remember this image?

The PPCs were added just because to the Huntsman A (bottom right corner) after strapping on LRMs and SRMs. Just felt like trolling. However it has been working really well.

Side note: I'm making a similar collage of my Marauders and Locusts. Could make one for my Jenners too or any other mech requested of me.

He said he wants the Phoenix Hawk because he agrees it looks awesome.

My Phoenix Hawk 1B. Of the 4 variants I own, it's the only one with quirks that buff the PPCs. I could dual wield a PPC in each hand if I wanted to, but like this I can do more corner-peeking from behind cover.
(They're hard to see, but under each arm is an MG so it does have backup guns. Very important with PPCs due to the heat.)
Edit! Almost forgot, the 1B also has ECM, hiding your friend from enemy sensors!

I had enough C-Bills leftover to also buy and fully kit a Jenner JR7-D.

Buuut... I was spooked enough by the "Lights are hard" to put down some money to get a Huntsman, too, and C-Bills to kit it. Now I just need to pick a variant...

Or wait... should I get an Archer for SRM Brawling?

EDIT: Okay, basically, I'm just looking for an SRM Brawler now. Will the Huntsman be good for that? Or are there other mechs that should be considered?

I doubt he is. With his cadet bonus, completing the academy, and the c-bills from the current event he should have over 11 million c-bills, the cost of a Locust, Jenner, and a Huntsman (Huntsman is on sale at the moment).

For the OP, a word of warning is to not spend all your c-bills on mechs - you're going to have to spend money equipping them to your satisfaction as well.

You're probably one of the most indecisive people that they have dealt with. So this may be why he asked.
If it helps, I am too. Which is why I play everything and do everything. When I feel like it.

----

Huntsman configs don't really matter; as an Omnimech you can just change the body parts on a whim, the only thing that matters is whether or not the CT has a weapon hardpoint. As far as I know none of them do, so it literally doesn't matter which one you pick. Though one that starts out with more of the weapons or hardpoints you want would be more efficient financially..

----

Nothing wrong with an Archer. Could also go the somewhat cheaper and cuter aspect of a Catapult which kinda looks like a big brother to the Locust.

So I just started MWO and am having a lot of fun. I'm not a stranger to slower-paced, tactical shooters - I come here as a player of World of Tanks (albeit a terrible one) and World of Warships (and a much less terrible one).

I have in mind what I want - a second line fire support Mech that provides a lot of firepower to help the big guys, ideally sticking with or at least near them, helping sweep the annoying little ones away so they can brawl. I'm not a fan of LRMs or SRMs so far. I'd like to be decently well protected armor-wise, but it's not imperative. Some mobility is also important. Mostly, I just want to lay down fire support from behind the front line and provide some real punch.

I assume I'll end up with a Medium or Heavy here. Any thoughts? I already know common knowledge for new players is Centurion or Hunchback, by the way (and my need to be a special snowflake makes those less appealing).

Well, in MWO, particularly in Solo drops, there really isnt 'second line fire'. The main role is 'do damage' out to @500m. Not hard with Clan mechs. Since the most common 'formation' in Solo is a murderball, dont worry about second-line or brawling. Choose a build that works at both ranges: Lazorvomit or Dakka.

You want a heavy, Take your pick of Timber Wolves, Ebon Jaguars, Night Gyr. Onion-llC if you prefer brawling>range.

If you prefer a Medium, HBK-llC is pretty tops right now.

Get good with fighting @500m, which is the length of ONE BOX on the RADAR. The diagonal is @ 700m.

Once you get that down comfortably, branch out to striker/harasser builds and later...'sniping'(usually done poorly in MWO).

As far as Anti-Light roles, you dont need Streak SRMs. You dont need a special build.

You need to pay attention and SHOOT THEIR LEGS. Seriously, thats all. The only mechs that have trouble with this are slow mechs.
