Congrats on trying to dismissing it with your personal experience. Anyone here who is actually trying to talk about balance and not save their new found toy has pretty much agreed 12 MG is OP. Simple.
It's the glassiest of glass cannons. If you don't shoot the most fragile target in the game (and yes, the
Locust is more tanky than this), it will BRRRRT you a lot and you will fall down and die. Out of lights, it packs large amounts of firepower into a tiny package at high speeds. On the other hand, it singlehandedly has validated anti-light weapon systems as a serious thing for the first time in a long time, and it can't counter it's own nemesis or a well-aimed AC/20 round.
I'm a long time missile boater, first LRMs, now ATMs. Bullying lights before they get close enough to death hug you is a reflex when your main guns have a deadzone (or near to it), so it amazes me how often people just plain don't pay attention to lights, or in some insane reversal of this, chase the squirrel when they have neither a chance of catching it or it's close enough to hit them. I have to swat the damn things off my team on a regular basis. In an assault.
It used to be the circle of life, where lights were eaten by mediums who were outgunned by heavies who were blown up by assaults that got ganked by lights. Now the lights are dangerous- not just PIRs, but anything with a decent Clan MG loadout. You weren't really around for the renaissance of the
Myst Lynx or ACH MG boating or any of that since y'know, you became a total forumwarrior. I have been. My only sadness is that they haven't evened out IS MGs to compete with Clan ones, so people actually realize that scrawny little fellow in the
Locust will actually kill them to death rather than be mostly harmless from the front and some of the slower types get to have some fun with the dakka.
