Mechs are big. Lots of moving parts, complex circuitry, etc. What happens when you are moving rubble around and your hand / muzzle gets hit with some debris and you have to run off and try to fix it? What will you do in the mean time to defend yourself? And what people forget about those nuclear reactors is that they do actually consume fuel, have waste, and require maintenance. So unless you have a hazmat suit, and know how to replace uranium fuel rods etc, a mech is not a good idea.

Elemental battle armor would be easier to repair, chargeable with generators, oh and how can we forget they contain a black goo substance that works to heal the wearer, provides morphine, antibiotics, etc. Plus it is easier to get around. You could also hide from any potential human enemies whom you cannot kill outright.

ok...wait for it...the origanal varient of the charger, 80 tons with respecable speed and 5 small lasers with a decent comms set up, plus it has a multi digit hand for easy manipulation. what else do you need? they try and climb up your legs, no problem, fire off in rapid sucession the lasers to get the outter armor hot and use the hand ta brush off the clingers. i think it would be the right one for the job.

this might be a valid arguement... if mechs had FISSION reactors they do not mechs use FUSION reactors, ths means that the fuel the mech uses is HYDROGEN not plutonium. this means that the fuel is hydrogen which you can get by electrolosis of water which breaks water down to hydrogen and oxygen

That was my thinking too. More Weapons!!! Then I thought about survivors, I can only hold so many in a regular BattleMech. At least with the Marco, the observation platform some folks could ride there. Plus mount weapons on that platform so I could make them work for their ride. ;)

Another thing that just occured to me, with these low weapon but blade or handed mechs physical combat is going to cover your mech with infected material which while that may not affect you it makes you a massive plague carrier for everyone who encounters you, unles you have a way to clense the ext. I am sticking with the Piranha fast and I can keep em at a distance.

Ewwwwww... the standard Charger? That's pretty gross. If you are going to take a Charger at least take one of the variants with a sword. The CGR-KMZ is out by 3049, right?

Nighthawk Mk. X-X-X Battle Armor... Suicide you say?

I would hole in my suit, I would do my best to NEVER leave it...
I plan to hid, find some light weapons (Handguns, Knifes, etc. etc.), and scavange for supplies, move from place to place until I find someplace suitable.
I mean they're zombies! What are they going to do? Strip my armor off me?
I can run 20 mph (30 kph), I can jump-jet 90 meters, I have fully operational hands, the suit has an ELS (Extended Life Support System)...
I'll just stick it out until I find a way off the planet... If that means I have to stealth (ECM) my way onto a ship and stowe away until we land somewhere else..

(I like the Macro idea)

*Edit XD X.X.X. is censored

Phoenix Hawk LAM, fly to the nearest jump or drop ship and barter for transit.

Why would I bring a long-range 'mech to a Zombie Apocalypse you might ask?

BECAUSE I'M CRAAAAAAAZY!

Why?
Cos boohoo to you, ya earthbound zombie plague.

An excellent idea that I agree with...but if I want to stay and kill the zombies, I'm going with a MAD-5D Marauder (the original "unseen" design). Large pulse, two mediums and a pair of ER PPCs to drop a building on them when they swarm. Plus giant stompy feet.

The Berserker. Why? Here is why:
1 I'm Lyran
2 IT BREATHES FIRE!!!
3 The Axe would come in handy.

But if I wasn't restricted to this time area, I would either take a Malak or a Spectral LAM. Or a Gesalt. Heavy PPC+Cap, 2 ER Medium Lasers and VSS? Ouch.

Blood Asp. Strip out the ballistics and missiles, and use that space for extra heat sinks and supplies, and a few extra tons of armour.
Equip a few ERPPC's for gunpoint diplomacy and pulse lasers for zombie duty.
Problem solved.

I'd like to have a Hellhound loaded with a couple large lasers, four medium lasers and a top speed around 95kph. It's got decent enough armour and firepower so that I can travel quickly, deal with zombies efficiently and be able to stand my ground (or run away, if need be.) against refugees' 'mechs.

Carbine IndustrialMech.
Whaaa?
Simple- build me (and any other survivors) a nice bunker and wait out the storm. The zombies will starve eventually, right?
But I might not have enough time to build a bunker, in which case I'd go with a LAM.

MAD-9W2 - Based on captured Word of Blake plans formerly owned by Vicore Industries, the MAD-9W2 carries twin ER Large Lasers and Medium Pulse Lasers, supported by a single Snub-Nose PPC. To offset a lower top speed, this Marauder mounts five Improved Jump Jets. A Heavy Duty Gyro enhances battlefield longevity, while a Guardian ECM Suite and C3 Slave maximize its electronics performance. A Light Fusion Engine provides weight savings to allow all these upgrades.

How about this one!
ECM and C3 Slave are optional!
