I second this!

That being said, how about a 8v8 or 12v12 "classic quickplay experience" no groups, one map for 6 hours (e.g. mining collective or other beloved classics) event queue?

(Ex: 8vs8 scheduled from 15min every hour, 00:00 to 00:15 / 13:00 to 13:15)
It's extremely difficult to play 8vs8 during a specific time slot.
Also, only those who participate in the event queue will be able to participate.

Odd , coming from someone that constantly plays in a group . . . . . . . . .

Hum... can't say I'm a TTB viewer, but from what I see of him ingame and a quick look at his VoDs, I feel that on the contrary he mostly plays solo.

All the usual variables--tier level, time of day, day of the week, player count, tonnage imbalance, presence of groups, etc.--still applied in determining match quality and it was not my experience that suffered in comparison to 12v12. There were still routine stomps and I still got my solo-player average-skilled butt handed to me regularly.
Some adaptation on the part of players was required and I suspect that had much to do with some of the resistance expressed in the forum. Though a number of the practical factors (eg: the potential for outsized influence of groups, balancing of tonnage, etc.) expressed have some validity and should be taken into account, considering that only a fraction of players read and post to the forum this is not a valid sample and I'm not convinced it represented a majority. The unfamiliar can be at least temporarily anxiety-provoking in itself. Most players are perfectly able to respond and make appropriate adjustments in their playstyle. Those who prospectively and adamantly announced they would not be playng until 12v12 resumed merely deprived themselves of an opportunity. To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." Whatever; it's a silly giant space robot game and of no consequence.
I'd like to see 8v8 return as a regular option, even intermittently, along the lines proposed by previous commenters.

Not trying to single you out, but yours was the last post I saw of this sort. Why is it that so many of the people who like 8v8 feel the need to denigrate those that don't like it? People like what they like and the same applies for things they don't like. Make your case in a positive way rather than demeaning those that disagree (little minds?) by assuming their thoughts and motives. The community is small enough as it is without people insulting whole swaths of players.

Your comment is well-founded. My post was insufficiently clear. That particular sentence of it was meant to refer to those specifically stating, immediately following the announcement of the 8v8 trial and before it commenced, that they would refuse to play until 12v12 was resumed.

Understood, but I'm one of those people. Have played 8v8 many times in the past. Don't like it. Didn't need to play it again. Don't assume that because we didn't want to participate in this test that we don't know what we're missing. Cheers.

I don't understand.
Actually I afraid you don't understand, but tell me if I'm wrong.
8v8 was precisely aimed at reducing waiting time while keeping the tier 1s away from T4-5. But since people apparently don't like it, now the solution to low population periods will be to open the tier gates.
My guess is those who whine about 8v8 being stompy will regret it when they'll really face tier 1s in their matches.
(and after some time T1s will probably get bored seal clubbing)
