The Battletech community has survived FASA's management, multiple publisher deaths, many poorly written novels, a phenomenal 80's Saturday morning cartoon, an attempted hijack of the franchise by a member of the fur fandom, no game balancing decisions, poor fiscal responsibility, and terrible posters.
What I'm getting at here is that complaining about Goons, many of whom are Battletech fans, is dumb and these threads need to stop.

as for blobing and swarming, it can only work in games where the devs allowed it. simply put, if [players] try to own the game and by any means endangers either the game competitiveness or enjoyment of others they will simply either fall on the fury of the devs or will ruin the game. simply put, if they start grifing and ruining the fun of the game, it will fall short of profit, and considering that this franchise is based on a fan comunity, this is threatening to the devs (who are also fans) as the comunity can easily start to boycott the game or simply move on. from my point of view, they will come and they will try, but they'll only succeed if they really are the best out there. WOW has not suffered from their evil mainly because blizzard love to screw up exploiters. same can happen (or not here). as for espionage and guild backstabbing, sadly, that is a reality that every guild and group WILL suffer from anywhere. it will be up to strict recruitment rules and dedication requirements to try and curb this pratice as much as possible.
Quoting this because it's still the highlight of the thread.

Hahahaha. While they most certainly want to draw in all the BT fans they can get, I doubt that their long-term income will depend on them (if the game takes off and does not die out within a year or 2). WoT is a HUGELY successful game (which noone saw coming). You can bet your mech minitures that their plan is to make a "WoT with robots, but better". They want every dumb kid that spends money on WoT-gold to spend money on MWO space-credits.
And if they manage to remove the worst sides of WoT (grindiness, many, MANY games in which your tank is totally ineffective against your opponents) they will succeed in that. Because lets be honest, giant robots ARE cool

They're relying on the diehards to make it pay for itself, but I guarantee they would looooove this to be the next WoT. If you think the only purpose of licensing an existing IP is to draw in existing fans with no thought toward growing the brand or leveraging an existing universe to save them the time and expense of universe building then I don't know what to tell you.

This. I get the feeling goon bashing has become something of a meme that people repeat without actually having any idea what goons are outside of what they've read on these forums. People have literally compared us to Nazis. They don't realize that SA is a huge community with people from all walks of life, including students, scientists, soldiers, teachers, meth dealers, anime fanatics, and, yes, tabletop and pen-and-paper game nerds. Most of the non-goons here seem like decent, normal folks, but some of you need to recognize that the only thing ALL goons have in common besides being terrible is posting on Something Awful. I mean, I don't mind being the game's player-run bad guy faction but it'd sure be dandy if people complaining about us weren't drowning out any and all discussion of community, meta-game, MWO's future, etc.

Yeah, that was my impression - goons were like the black plague or something, until i heard the podcasts \ googled a bit - so now i'm just fence sitting waiting to see if you will repeat history or not, heh.

Aww, thanks. I mostly post here while drinking so it's a damn miracle I say anything sensible.

This is the kind of post that needs to not be posted. Goons range in age from early teens to 70s (not kidding, we have at least one WW2 vet). If you look at some of the computer terminals in Doom3 you can see the corner of a window with the (old) SA theme. One of the translators for the red and blue versions of Pokemon is a goon. We also have people who've been perma-banned for being literally pedophile diaper fetishist furry racists. The point is if you think we don't have people who've played longer than you, you are exactly the kind of poster I was talking about with that meme stuff.

Seriously, why are there so many people on here getting their knickers in a twist because a few guys from a website where a slightly brutal sense of humour is a requirement want to play the same game as them?

The only thing I'm kinda concerned about is that this game will devolve into a bunch of light mechs playing laser tag rather than balanced groups of lights, mediums and heavies.

So glad you made this your first post after spending money on the game and never taking the time to look into who or what the goons are.

That's really quite funny,
I mean you guys have a rep that stinks to high heaven and yet you expect people to roll over and say; " Aaaaah they are just misunderstood." It's interesting that you are now looking to see yourselves as part of the MWO community here when your little leader Mittani there said you lot don't care about the place. That this is a place that is going to have to learn to accept your forms of griefing, that the crowd here are in for a wake up call. What a joker. Oh and the meta-gaming, you lot have proven time and time again in the past that you'll go down "any" road to get the advantage, so yep, you stink the place out all right.
As for drowning the place out, well many here haven't had the unpleasant experiences of having to game with you, they see you as just another pebble in the road, but there are others here the know exactly what you are about and thus are making everyone aware of it. You don't like this of course but guess what? Tough. The alternative is to have you run riot through the place wrecking it whilst smiling from ear to ear and slapping yourselves on the back about what a great job you've done..
Anyway, the powers that be are on to you so all of this doesn't matter par keeping the community here informed for what kind of group you are. Time will tell if they get the gaming mechanic right and if they don't well I'm sure you'll find ways of trying to wreck it or abuse it. Its what you do.
