Why is this thread still alive? OP's fears are false speculation from NOT reading the interview...

Would you like to spend $5 to purchase a cool headlight on your Warhammer?

Thank you for your purchase!

Did you know that two hatchets are better than one? Buy an off hand hatchet for your Hatchetman today for $2.50!

Thank you for your purchase!

You are now eligible for 50% off a top hat for your Atlas. Now you run around yelling "HUG ME" on the battlefield in style!

Its simple.

Game Developer's (well not the game devs themselves, im sure they'd love to pour their heart and soul into their work if THEY WERE ALLOWED) slash Managers of the company have become lazy, and greedy.

No longer is a game about how awesome/fun it is to the player, its about how quickly they can pump out a mediocre product for the maximum profit return.

With MMO's it goes a step further.

MMO developers have a harder job, not only do they have to make a game, they have to make a game that the players feel is worth the money to pay subscription too.

Wow came along and Effed up alot of MMO companies. Alot of other MMO's tried to be like wow, and failed because of it. Wow was an anomoly, something that statisticly shouldent have happend - a freak show, a popular one, at that.

So many companies tried to mimmic wow and failed and lost money because of it - it cornered the developers and gave them two options. Find a way to keep subscribers up or find another way to fund their games.

Free to Play is born.

It picked up well in games such as farmville, world of tanks etc - and other dying mmo's try to switch to that model - not all succeed. A large part of a successfull F2P game is that the game has to be built specificly to cater for it.

F2P is just a phase where developers go sit in a corner and lick their wounds from failed attempts at trying to be something that they are not (wow)

however, its a well known fact, that free to play games suck ***** purely because they're play to win.

Developers fail to realise, we play games for fun, winning is part of the fun.

An example of how free to play sucks in RL terms so developers can understand it:

Imagine all MMO players as disabled people in wheelchairs playing basketball.

All players are given the oportunity to spend $5 and instead of sitting in their normal wheelchair, they can have an electric wheelchair, that moves faster and has absolutely no chance of being knocked over during gameplay becuase of the size/weight of the thing.

A few people put their hands up, the rest decline, or simply dont have $5 on them.

They play the game - the ones that put in the money for the electric wheelchair have an obvious advantage, and the team with the most of them wins.

The ones in the electric wheelchairs are going nuts, cheering and waving, while the rest are shaking their heads in shame, regardless of what team they're on.

Because the purpose of playing the game was a competition of skill on equal grounds between all the players. Their limitations are decided by themselves, how hard they trained, how hard they praticed. They normayl feel proud to win, because they had earned it.

They are very dissapoint that the game has changed from two sides duking it out to see who's the best, skill wise, into who's got the most money/richest parents.

People go to flashy/expensive pubs, posh/snobby parties/meets etc to show off how much cash and their social status, not turn "E Sports" into a catwalk where they can strut around going neener neener im better than you because i have lots of monies.

So, play this **** game (Sorry mechwarrior fans - im a mech lover too, but P2W my mechwarrior? **** no, its not mechwarrior anymore, im sorry) should you wish to show off you're social status, or if you wish to play it regardless for fun.

But please dont feed them any money, or you'll just fuel the drive for more **** like this.

P.S - Mechwarrior Rebooted = way better anyway.
Play world of Tanks if you want this game and just imagine the tanks are mechs.

@ OP...

I don't think what you are saying is true. They have said you won't be able to buy items that confer a tactical advantage and I have never seen "item rental" work in an MMO. No one rents the item is what happens. Generally you are allowed to grind for most items or buy it early.

F2P can work very well if it is done right with a balance of free and buyable items. It's just an alternative form of subscription fee. One you don't have to pay if you don't want too.

League of Legends is F2P and it is defiantly not P2W...

This, this, this, this.

Been playing League of Legends all year. Great game. All the stuff that you buy are cosmetic and conveinencies. Nothing that gives an advantage.

The fact that MW:O will be F2P makes me even MORE excited to play it.

I just hope some of the mech skins are super awesome.

Also: RAINBOW COLORED PULSE LASERS!!!!

P2W doesnt sound like Mechwarrior.

Sorry, im just this kinda fan, and im not being trying to be high and mighty, i just have heart for mechwarrior to buy and own all the ficiton books thus far and all the games since middle school, and P2W (IF im reading this right) just doesnt sound like MW. Now i maybe shooting this early, i just care lolz, but i would really just like to:

1. Buy the game. You get your money, its been TOO LONG and im willing to pay $60 bucks on the spot, not this pay as you go.

2. Sign in online, don't care, make it similar to Starcraft 2's system.

*3. Have a single player MW3 or MW2 Mercs style CAMPAIGN, but if it comes to it please make the game parallel to Mechwarrior 2 Mercs.

*4. Instead of real money purchases, create a currency system with exp or "fake money". You have one mech, you lose that mech, you start back at the bottom again, salvage another, or maybe a friend will LEND you or GIVE you a mech. Happy Birthday!

*5. Have a tonnage limit PER mission or missions that compare experience of players. Try to make balances with for noob vs pro situations.

*Reflecting of the Command & Conquer 4 failure here. LOL. Worst online gaming disaster of my life.

This game is not going to be pay to win. I'll have to side with the developers, as that is how they've stated it, and well...they're kind of MAKING the game.

Mechwarrior being free is going to be great, and having the ability to purchase specific things I like and ignore the rest is fine too. You aren't forced into buying anything, but you can if you want to support the game/want a specific item/etc. I buy DLC for other games that I feel I want, this won't be any different.

I'm looking forward how they'll approach this.

Wishful thinking, or have you not tried World of Tanks. The interview i read brought shades of that game to my mind with every paragraph, and that one is most definitely pay to win. The temptation to go from "free" to "milk them hard" is just too strong. If you've spent much time with WoT, it's obvious from the interview that these guys are drooling all over WoT's success.

All of the starry eyed creative types make the same claims of their F2P not being P2W, but very few have the power to stop that from happening.

As much as I would love to get excited about this game, the interview has put me firmly on the side of the pessimists -- hope they prove me wrong.

All we can do is hope and do our best to try to keep it from happening. They may well be able to pull it off, or they could slip and ***** it up. I'd rather be hopeful and mindful then be a pessimist about it.

Whether they do or not, it's still free and legal to try it out for a bit. At least you're not dumping money on a potential failure, so keep that in mind. :)

I really hope they dont **** it up. I have already lost Command & Conquer to "shortcuts" and to "no heart for the franchise" developers.

From what i have seen so far though, I still got the faith.

One thing that bugs me tho, So if a person who has a job and does not have a lot of time to play this game seems to me would get screwed. "More you play the more stuff you can get" Unless they are trying to say something like Battlefield 3 with a ranking system and unlocks (get paid to buy new mechs) or what not.

Hopefully this isn't going to be a WoT type game (got bored of it since the first 2 days).
Loved MechWarrior 3 (and not because I got called a hack on the msn gaming zone cause I was in fast mode due to a bug with xp) and MechWarrior 4 (altho the mechs in 3 look better than what Microsoft did)
