Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like a good idea for another game to me, but not this one.

Seems many of you went through the same mental process that took place at Piranha. We all wanted to make the SP game as well but eventually as things evolved we became very excited and even had a feeling that we wished we had come to this point much sooner as it is such a perfect fit for MechWarrior.
I still hope for a SP product in the near future, but for now we are laser focused on making sure MWO is a big success and that right there is our greatest hope for further products including SP.
Unless Russ has changed his mind a single player game is not off the stove. Just pushed way, way back on the back burner. So cold as to be congealed. Maybe even a bit suspicious looking. Could be starting to grow it's own life form. But not forgotten.

Exactly right...every time I see a post about PvE it makes me cringe. The old games had some single player instances to tell the story of the game, but that was the extent of it. The instances had no impact on PvP other than giving players a chance to get familiar with the controls or test a Mech design before playing PvP. But even testing is best done in the field of battle. I could understand a tutorial for new players, As for testing Mech designs, I'd rather have a test range that players could join with a friend to do some controlled tests on armor, damage, etc. Testing vs. a computer player that you have no control over is not as beneficial as having someone in another Mech doing some controlled tests. Instances strictly for the purpose of telling the stories I could live with, but no ties to PvP for in-game rewards. That would be terrible.

The learning curve is supposed to be steeper than other games so I've read. It would be wise to give people an option where they want to cut their teeth in the game. I'm sure you wouldnt be very happy if you had 5 new players on your team at once driving like they are a bunch of drunks, but then maybe you do. Having a learning/testing section wont hurt anyone. It may actually make for more competitive matches sooner than later. I hope a feature for learning/testing a mech will be in game at launch.

To solve this new player issue why not have a new player or practice PvP match mode that is not rated and has no gain/loss of C-bills, faction or whatever else might be gained in a match? New players could learn in a sort of live fire environment against other new players as well as the occasional vets who might be testing a new mech build but without any gains or losses. In the case of ammo and repairs allow ammo to be consumed in match but restored to pre-match value after exiting the match with repairs done to the pre-match level as well.
New players would learn so much more in this environment than they would against a bunch of AI in a PvE practice area.

We must have played different MMO's, because my experience was that PvE was ruined constantly in favor of PvP "balance".

However, PVE like cooperative missions or random battles and campaigns like the old MW games that had 20 mission campaigns and story lines!? Heel to the YEAH! PVP gets.......boring!? I hate it where the ONLY wayu to play the game is PVP...PVE is good for when you want to play the game and just play, not worry about trying to kill off a PVP dude or w/e..when you just want to play but play lazy..not think as hard....its what makes WoT kinda lame. I like my M103 but dont want to play PVP with or against idiocy...

What you are talking about sounds like a training room which after a player learns the basics of moving turning shooting would be fine. For players wanting to test a build that sounds great. As far as a fresh player to the game I'd hope he can learn basic operations before he gets blown up or it would be of little use.
I'm not even sure the new player area would require any AI. My thoughts are just an area to get familiar with your mech.

I'm curious why a player with such negative views of PvP would want to play MWO.
